“Yes, but that’s not the po-“

“Which was your favourite picture?” Zane asked with a smile. “Mine is still year one’s. Loved your dress.”

“The dress that Warner ruined by getting cake on it?”

“Yes. The one.”

I rolled my eyes. “Let go of me now, Zane. I need to return to Blake. I need to stop their fight,” I insisted.

“How will you stop it? You’re just a tiny little bird, Lia. You can’t do anything.”

“I have to try! They’re going to kill each other.”

“Nah, they won’t. You don’t think your friend fights well?”

“He roughed you up,” I mocked.

Zane smiled. “You really think that’s what happened?”

“Of course. I bet you’re not much of a fighter.”

His smile widened, and he grabbed my wrist and dragged me back inside the cafeteria, towards where Warner and Blake were throwing insults and punches at each other. Zane, let go of my hand a small distance away from the fight, and walked up to them casually. Then, in the most relaxed manner he could come up with, he grabbed them both by the backs of their necks and pulled them away.

“Enough, boys. Lia’s gonna call the principal now.

-LIA’S POV-

After a minute of struggling, Blake managed to push Zane’s hand off his neck, anu gave him a hard push. He immediately stepped between Zane and I, grabbing my arm and pushing behind himself.

“Stay away from her, Adams. Last warning.”

“Or what?” Zane asked, meeting his glare. me

“Stop!” I yelled, shoving Blake’s hand off of my arm and stepping away from both of them. A crowd had gathered around us by now, watching us as though we were putting up a play for them. “Both of you, all of you, enough.”

“They started it, Lia. Let me end it,” Blake said.

Zane laughed mockingly. “You’re gonna end us?”

“I said, enough,” I snapped. Then I glanced at Blake. “You wanna fight them, Blake? Go on and do that. But stop making me a reason for it.”

“Stop making you a reason?” Blake asked, staring at me incredulously. “You are the reason, Lia. They were and are jerks

O you. That is the whole point of this. To get them an alone.” to leave you

“You don’t have to do that anymore, Blake. Zane has promised that his friends won’t bother me anymore. Right, Zane?” I asked, looking at him.

The rest of the Hounds frowned, all their heads turning to Zane.

Zane glanced at me, and then at his friends, then at Blake.

PATS

“Zane wouldn’t even speak to someone like you,” Aaron said.

“I swear,” Sheila laughed.

“You high or something, Loser Lia?” Ajax asked, an amused smile on his face.

I stared at Zane, waiting for him to speak up.

But instead of admitting the promise he’d made to me, he rolled his eyes and stormed out of the cafeteria.

My mouth fell open, throat immediately starting to burn.

“There you have it.” Ajax laughed. “Like Aaron said, he wouldn’t even speak to you.”

I looked around, and found everyone snickering. I glanced at Blake, and his face was hard.

Swallowing the lump forming in my throat, I hurried out of the cafeteria, my stomach twisting.

How could Zane do that right after what he did for me the previous night? Had Blake been right about him? Was all of this just a trap?

But even if it was, why was he keeping our interactions a secret from his friends? They would know about it.

Or maybe he stayed silent because a lot of people were watching.

Because how could the great Zane Adams be friends with a loser like me?

I spent the rest of the day avoiding eye contact with everyone. Blake was searching for me, but I’d avoided him completely. I didn’t have the mental strength to answer his questions right now. Not when I didn’t even all the answers. If he asked me what I’d been doing with Zane, what would I say? That he kidnapped me and took me from my house to celebrate my belated birthday with him? Blake would either not believe me, or believe me and start another fight with Zane, I couldn’t deal with either of that right now.

It was surprising how I felt more mentally exhausted after Blake showed up to protect me, than I had in the years I got bullied by The Hounds. Maybe I’d gotten used to that kind of stress, whilst this one was still new. I’d get used to it eventually, or maybe

Blake would give up.

Maybe Zane would give up a lot quicker.

My phone rang as I approached the door of my house.

I frowned, glancing at the screen, to see Blake’s name flashing on it. Sighing, I declined the call, fishing out the house keys from my pocket.

The phone rang again as I unlocked the door and stepped inside, but I rejected the call again. I did not want to speak to him right now. I did not want to speak to anyone right now.

“Hi honey!” Mom yelled from the kitchen, making me flinch at the sound. My ear started to ring. Why was she being so loud?

“Hi mom,” I said softly, walking up to the counter.

“How was your day sweetie?” she asked, smiling.

“It was okay,” I replied. “I’m a little tired.”

“Go take a shower and then a nap, you’ll feel better,” she suggested.

“Yeah, I’ll do that. Thanks, Mom.”

“I love you.”

“I love you too baby.”

I started to make my way towards my bedroom, when the doorbell rang. I paused, glancing at the door.

“It’s okay, you go,” Mom said, drying her hands with a cloth. “I’ll get the door.”

I let her be the one to answer the door, but for some reason, I felt the urge to wait there. Somehow, I knew there were only two people who could’ve showed up right now. The second Mom opened the door, Blake’s cologne filled my nose.

I frowned, surprised at how incredible the projection was.

And how easily I recognised it.

-LIA’S POV-

“Good evening, ma’am,” I heard him greet her.

“Hello, young man. How can I help you?” Mom asked, clearly charmed by him at once.

“My name is Blake Walker, I am a friend of Lia’s. She has one of my notebooks, and we have a test tomorrow, so I came to get it. Would it be okay?”

Mom laughed. “Lia has your notebook, does she?” She turned to glance at me, playfully narrowing her eyes. “Come on in.”

I took in a deep breath, forcing a smile when Blake walked in.

“Hi Blake.

“Hey.” He smiled at me. “You took my-

“Yes, come on up.” I went straight to my bedroom, not sticking around to watch my Mom’s excited expression.

Given the way I was, with my nose usually buried in a book or my eyes stuck on a laptop screen as I coded, I didn’t blame her for getting so excited to see a boy show up at our door.

“Keep the door open!” she shouted, still managing to make the situation awkward.

Heat rose to my cheeks as I entered my room, and Blake followed inside.

“I will!” I shouted back. before closing the door and locking it.

Blake laughed. “You just promised to keep the door open.”
