He sighed at her words and she ignored it, just returned her gaze out the window. Neither of them spoke for the rest of the drive to his apartment, and she got out of the car and winced as she put weight on her ankle and looked down at it. It was already swollen and walking was going to hurt like a b***h.
She closed the car door as he came around and to her side, and before she knew what was happening, he just scooped her up bridal style and was walking away with her through the underground car park, heading for the elevator.
“What are you bloody doing, Calvin?” she grated out.
“Helping you, whether you like it or not. You clearly can’t walk on that ankle, so I will carry you,” he stated back calmly.
“Put me down.” She muttered. She didn’t need to know what it felt like to be carried by him, or helped by him. She’d been looking after herself all her life and could do things on her own.
“No. Fight me, struggle if you must against me. But I will not stand here and watch you cause pain to yourself. When I can ease it by something as simple as picking you up.”
“I’m not a little girl that needs carrying around. I’m a grown woman.” She snapped at him.
“Yes, a very stubborn, argumentative woman with a brilliant mind, who at times is vulnerable and needs help from those around her!” he looked right at her “press the button.” He stated as they came to the elevator. “Or you’ll be stuck here all night in my arms, I’m not putting you down unless its on a couch or in a bed, and you’ll be accepting my help of getting you an ice pack and strapping your ankle as well.”
“I can do all of that myself,” she told him flatly. oing to put her His hazel-green eyes met hers, and she knew by the stubborn set of his jaw that he wa down, even when she struggled to get down, his grip just tightened upon her. “So bloody stubborn, he grated out after several minutes. “Fine Let’s play it your way,” he stated, and turned and walked away, heading for the garage entrance.
She glared at him and snapped, “Just put me down.”
“No, you can’t walk.” He snapped right back, and she gasped when he kicked the exit button on the wall, with a foot and the gate rolled up, and then he was just carrying her up the driveway.
“What are you doing, and where are you going?” she asked.
“Through the lobby where the doorman can push the damned buttons, because you’re too stubborn to let me help you. All this could have been avoided if you’d just pressed the elevator button. Too late now,” he stated, and strode them towards the front doors of his building, uncaring of who saw them.
The doorman opened the door for him. “Evening Mr Reeves.”
“Luke, could you get the elevator for me please, Miss Riddley has a swollen ankle and can’t walk right this moment.”
“Of course,” Luke had stated, “It’s good to see you again, Miss.” She could see he was the same night doorman that had been here all those years ago when she’d been Calvin’s wife.
“Luke.” She greeted him back, not wanting to be rude. Luke even leaned in and swiped his access card to the panel and pressed Calvin’s floor and bid them a good night.
She again tried to get Calvin to put her down in the elevator, but he wouldn’t just stood there and ignored all her struggles and telling him to put her down. He didn’t say a damned word at all. He just adjusted his grip on her at times, and by the time the elevator had arrived to his penthouse floor, she’d stopped struggling. He was as stubborn as she was.
“Press the doorbell please.” He stated, “I can’t get my keys out right this minute.”
She glared up at him and then reached out and pressed the bloody button. His father opened the door and blinked, stepped aside and Calvin strode through the apartment and put her right down in his bed. She went to get up and found herself caged in. “Stay put, just accept my helping you, it’s not that hard to do. You can’t walk on that ankle and if I have to, I’ll pick you up once more, take you right to the hospital and carry you into the E.D. like I did here, for treatment. I’m going to get you an ice pack,” he stated, “I’m not trying to seduce you, just trying to tend to your injury is all.”
She glared up at him, and he smiled down at her. “Keep fighting me on this and that very possessive, dominant husband you were married to,” he leaned down until his face was a mere inch away from her own,” might just seduce you,” then his lips touched her forehead in a soft tender kiss “I want to treat you right, love you like you deserved to be loved.” He told her softly and his eyes met hers once more.
“And I understand you’re angry and upset right now with me. But you’re also in pain and I can’t stand that, to be honest. I need to help fix that, and you can beat me senseless when you’re feeling better, for how things fell apart. I’ll take it all, deserve it. I know that,” he stated simply, and then stood up and pointed at her. “Stay put.” He warned her. edroom
She was just staring at him as he walked from the bedroom. She kind of didn’t really know what to say to him, she could see his mother looking at her, and she mouthed ‘What happened?’ to her from doorway.
Marilyn sighed and pushed herself up into a sitting position, “He knows.” She muttered.
“Oh, so the secret is out.” Kay half smiled. “What’s wrong with you?” she asked, walking into the room. She could only nod in response. “I walked 20 flights of stairs and,” she looked at her ankle. “Now it’s hard to walk.” She indicated to the swelling. “He went all… I don’t bloody know.” She muttered, and Kay chuckled, but said nothing.
Calvin
He’d asked the question about her having her memories back because he needed to know the answer to what he’d seen upstairs and just how much she recalled. A part of him had been very happy to hear that the remembered their life together in full. Now they could start working on coming back together.
Though he’d not liked hearing about the pain she still suffered from the car accident all those years ago, or seeing her take pain relief for it either, for her to do that with him right there, it must mean she had pain that couldn’t be managed right this minute.
But he had snapped his mouth shut when she’d yelled at him to ‘shut it’. He had no right to chastise her is what she was saying. And she was right, he’d caused all of this to happen to her. She’d had that accident when trying to call him, so technically it was his fault that she was scarred and broken, in pain years later.
Then, seeing her get out of his car and the way she could barely put her foot down and walk on it, he’d not liked that at all, not once in all the times he’d seen her, months ago here in Houston, or over the past week out at Cliffside had she let on that she had residual pain. He’d never seen her limp or even rub her leg or ankle as if she was in pain.
