Chapter 192 – Falling for the Alpha As a Student Novel

My mother taught me a little about the shield I can summon to protect myself against attacks, but she never mentioned being able to do it for others.

I felt a sharp pain in my arm and winced painfully.

Enzo was hurt.

My heart raced in my chest, hitting my ribcage.

Closing my eyes, I took a deep breath while raising my hands. I imagined a shield being formed around my body.

A clear shield that no one would know was there.

Nobody can get near them. I felt Enzo’s emotions calming down and the determination was back.

“It’s working!”

Val breathed. “Keep going, Lila!”

I had only ever used this shielding ability for a short period before, and it was only for myself. Using the shield for multiple people for an extended period was taking a lot out of me quickly.

I didn’t have enough training with this.

It felt like my muscles were tearing and I yelled out in agony, getting the attention of the guards left behind to babysit me. They both snapped me worried looks before rushing over to me.

“Miss Lila! Are you okay?”

One of them asked, wrapping an arm around me, and keeping me on my feet.

I couldn’t speak, I needed to keep the shield up to protect Enzo.

“Lila…drop the shield. It’s hurting you,”

I heard a voice in my head.

“Enzo?”

I mindlinked back.

“I can feel your pain,”

he murmured. “Drop the shield. We’ll be okay.”

“I’m okay, Enzo…”

I said through gritted teeth.

Pain ripped through me, and I screamed in agony as I fell to the ground. I couldn’t keep the child going anymore. I felt the shield loosening and then the tension lessening. As my muscles relaxed, they also burned with pain.

My heart was racing at lightning speed, and I thought for a moment that I was going to have a heart attack.

I heard the guards kneeling beside me and saying something, I felt their touch on my arm and then on my head. But I had no idea what they were saying. I managed to steal a look at one of them and I saw nothing but worry in his eyes.

He was trying to get me to stand up, but I could hardly feel my body.

“Val?”

I said in my head to my wolf.

I could sense her there, but she was too weak and exhausted to respond.

I tried to stay awake, needing to make sure that Enzo made it out alive. I watched as multiple rogues ran out of the building. They looked to be fearing for their lives. I thought they would take this as their opportunity to snatch me despite the warriors being nearby.

But it was like they didn’t even notice me.

They ran past us as fast as they could.

But there were still no signs of Enzo or the other warriors.

He’s still alive…

I would have felt it if he wasn’t.

That was the only thing I had to hold onto.

More rogues came out of the building, and I watched as one held something in his hands. I couldn’t make out what it was at first, but once they pulled the pin and threw it in the open window, I knew exactly what it was and what was about to happen.

The rogue ran as if his entire life depended on it and the warriors were too slow to react to whatever was thrown in that window. But their instincts took over and they both ducked, covering my body with theirs.

Between the sound of the explosion, and my body slamming against the ground due to the earth-shaking, my eyes grew too heavy to keep open.

Enzo’s POV

The hideout reeked of rogues; it made me nearly sick to my stomach. There were a lot of them, and they were attacking my men and me.

I was dodging their attacks and even getting a few bites in myself. I was still bigger than most of them, but because there were so many of them, I couldn’t beat them all on my own.

I felt a sharp blade slicing through my arm; it was made of silver. It stung, but it didn’t let that be shown on my face. Just as the blade came back around and was about to slice my face, I shifted into my human form, ducking the attack, and kicking the rogue asshole to the ground. He was also in his human form.

I stepped on his wrist, forcing him to release the blade and beg me for mercy. Max let out a low growl in my throat; he wanted to tear this jerk to pieces.

But as an Alpha, I couldn’t kill someone who surrendered.

“Cuff him and get him out of here,”

I barked to one of my gammas.

I shifted back into my wolf form and went toward the other rogues who were continuously fighting my men. A lot of these rogues had already left, but there were still a few bold ones that lingered behind. There are some in human forms, shooting arrows in our direction.

Some missed me by only a hair, others grazed me.

I ran toward them, growling loudly and being fueled with anger.

I was seeing nothing but red.

A few more arrows flew in my direction and I intended to catch them with my teeth, but as soon as they neared me, they bounced off an invisible barrier and fell to the ground. It stalled me for only a moment, confused as to what just happened.

“It’s Val,”

Max breathed, lifting his nose in the air and feeling the energy of his mate circulating him. “She gave us a shield.”

“I didn’t know that was possible,”

I said in return as more arrows flew in my direction, but like the first one, they hit an invisible barrier and came crashing down to the ground.

“She’s strong,”

Max said.

That was an understatement.

Lila was outside with a couple of my trusted gamma warriors, so my only comfort was knowing that she was at least safe. If anything happened to her during this, I would never be able to forgive myself. I wouldn’t be able to forgive myself if anything happened to my mother either.

I could smell her in this hideout, so I knew she was there.

I realized quickly that it wasn’t just me that Lila had placed a shield around; it was all the gammas and Ethan as well. They seemed confused when rogues were having trouble getting to them, but they used the shield to their advantage.

With Lila’s help, we managed to get through the clearing of rogues without getting hurt any further. However, as soon as the last of the rogues was captured, I felt a painful tug in my muscles. Like I was being torn apart from the inside.

“Our mate is hurt,”

Max breathed, also feeling the pain she was feeling.

It had to have been the shield; it was draining her of her strength and making her exhausted. It was also tearing her muscles. It was too strong, and she wasn’t trained enough to use that much power yet.

She needed to release the shield.

“Lila!”

I said through the mindlink.

She didn’t respond. She was too busy keeping the shield in place keeping herself together. But I knew she could hear me.

“Lila, you need to let the barrier down. You are hurting yourself. I can feel it.”

“I want to help you,”

she said through her teeth, and I knew how much she struggled to speak.

“You’ve done more than enough,”
