It was me. It really was me.

And the mark on my neck-it was still there, still pulsing, still mine.

I didn’t think.

I just moved.

My body was still burning up with need.

One second I was in my room. The next I was leaping through the open window and running across rooftops and pavement and forest, chasing the only thing that mattered-my mate.

The forest zoomed by in a blur. The world was nothing but sound and scent and instinct.

His scent was strong now. Closer.

I raced up a hill, through a clearing, and down another slope.

It was easy. Like I was born to do this. Born to run through nature, born to feel the wind comb through my fur.

Meant to be a wolf. Not a human.

Finally, his pack house came into view.

The lights were dim. It was quiet.

But his scent was everywhere.

I tracked it up the wall-literally, because apparently, my wolf didn’t care about gravity-and landed on the balcony outside his window.

The moment I saw him, I forgot the world.

He was lying in bed, shirtless, the sheets tangled around him. Peaceful. Beautiful.

Mine.

The window shattered as I crashed through, glass spraying as I landed on the floor with a growl.

Zane sat up instantly, eyes wide.

Recognition swept across his face.

“Lia…”

I couldn’t respond. The pain came back, harder now that I was near him. My legs shook.

His scent wrapped around me like a storm.

I growled again, body convulsing.

Before he could move towards me, my strength gave out.

Everything went dark.

-LIA’S POV-

I woke up slowly, like my body was trying to swim to the surface after drowning for hours.

Every limb felt heavy, sore, and overheated.

I didn’t even need to open my eyes to know I was still at Zane’s place. His scent was everywhere-wrapped around the sheets, on my skin, in the air. Safe. Familiar.

Intoxicating.

Something was still off.

My legs ached, my back was damp with sweat, and it felt like fire had settled low in my stomach. Not just heat-but leftover pain too. A dull, throbbing pulse that came and went. The mark on neck didn’t pulse anymore, though, but there was a gentle ache replacing the desire. Zane had probably bitten me again to calm it down. my

I blinked against the morning light pouring through the window. Zane was sitting in the armchair next to his bed, arms on his knees, hands clasped, staring at the floor like it had wronged him somehow.

“What happened?” My voice came out cracked.

His head jerked up fast. “You’re awake.”

“Yeah. Barely.” I shifted under the blanket, winced. “Why do I feel like I got hit by a truck?”

Zane stood, walked over slowly, and sat on the edge of the bed. His jaw was tense. “You went into heat.”

I stared at him. “I what? Heat? Like… animals?”

“Yes. It’s… a thing that happens to female werewolves,” he said quietly. “It’s triggered by the bond. Mated female werewolves go into heat once or twice a year. It’s not exactly predictable and can happen anytime.”

“Heat,” I repeated, unable to wrap my head around it.

Was I an animal now?

“Your body reacts… like it’s ready to bond completely. Physically. Emotionally. Everything goes into overdrive. You get a fever. Your scent changes. It makes you…” He hesitated.

…very vulnerable.”

The memories were fuzzy but still intense-the way I couldn’t think straight, the way I had rushed to him like I’d die if I didn’t immediately see him.

“You were in pain,” he said, softer now. “I had to cool your body down. Get you to bed. I redid your mark to help you a little. But you kept pulling me close and I-“

He stopped, rubbed the back of his neck.

I pushed myself up, trying not to hiss at the soreness. “Did something happen? Are you okay?”

He let out a dry laugh. “Not really.”

I frowned. “Zane-“

“Your scent, Lia,” he said, eyes meeting mine, “it was driving me crazy. It calls to male wolves. Every instinct I have was telling me to… claim you. Right then. Right there.”

Heat rose to my face, my heart giving a loud thump in my chest.

“I didn’t,” he said quickly, probably hearing my heart race. “I swear I didn’t. I just got you into bed, and cleaned you with ice water. And I stayed until the fever broke. I promise I didn’t take advantage of you.”

I reached for his hand, lacing our fingers together. “I know that, Zane. I trust you.”

He didn’t squeeze my hand back. His grip was loose, careful.

I laid back again, letting the silence stretch for a bit. My brain was slowly catching up, piecing together the implications.

“So… is it safe for me to be away from you like this?” I asked, biting the inside of my cheek. “What if it happens again? And what am I supposed to tell my parents? They’ll notice something’s off. They have already been talking about how I don’t study much anymore. I’m afraid they’ll ask too many questions and I won’t know what to say.”

Zane stared at me a moment, then sat up straighter. “Then why don’t you come live with me? Move into the pack house.”

I blinked at him. “What?”

“You’re already mine. We can announce it. Make it official. You can stay here, be protected, not have to explain every little thing to your parents. I think it’s time.”

I opened my mouth, closed it, then opened it again. “Are you saying you want to announce me as your Luna? Properly?”

He nodded, smiling. “Yeah. There’s nothing more I want. If you’re ready for it, of course.”

I pursed my lips, thinking about it.

Just the idea of living with him all the time made my cheeks red.

“Isn’t that something we’re supposed to do after we, you know… consummate the bond? Or like, get married and stuff?”

Zane gave me a look. “We don’t have to do that yet, love. There’s no rush. We can take our time.” He pushed my hair away from my face.

“But I’m ready.” I sat up again, frowning. “Zane, my body literally went into heat. Doesn’t that mean I’m ready?”

Zane chuckled, leaning in and pressing a kiss to my temple. His gaze softened.

“It means your body thinks it’s ready,” he said gently. “But I want us to do that when we both feel it’s right. Not because biology threw us into it.”

My frown only deepened. “But I do feel like it’s right.”

He hesitated. Just a second too long.

And there it was-that flicker of something else. A shadow crossing over his features. My eyes narrowed.

“You’re hiding something,” I said quietly.
