“Don’t act like you don’t dream about sucking faces with Sapphire,” Aaron said, smirking.

“I don’t,” I said drily.

It was a lie.

“Sapphire?” Christy sang, suddenly tuning in to our conversation.

I pushed her by the face. “Go back to arguing with your boyfriend.”

“No,” she laughed, slapping my hand off. “Tell me. Who is this girl?”

Even Nathan cracked a smile, looking interested.

“I’ll tell you privately,” Sheila said, winking.

Christy grinned, then nodded, wiggling her eyebrows at me.

I rolled my eyes.

I reached for a fry and tried to ignore her, my eyes returning to Zane.

He reached towards the ketchup bottle, but Lia’s voice cut in softly, “No ketchup.”

Zane stopped. Like she’d pulled a leash. Then set his hand down, not saying a word.

My eyes widened.

What the hell?

I watched him for another moment. No eye roll. No smirk. Just complete acceptance, like it hadn’t even occurred to him to disagree.

Lia was saying it for his betterment. He was still healing. Still sick.

But the way he listened to her was not normal.

It was odd.

Christy was busy asking Ajax about something, and Nathan was distracted scanning the room like he expected someone to attack us, so no one else noticed.

But I did.

I almost said something. A joke, maybe, to test if anyone else noticed.

But the words stuck.

There was no way to say it without sounding paranoid. Or worse-like I was making an accusation.

But something was clearly not right.

Lia leaned into Zane’s shoulder again, a warm smile on her face. He kissed the top of her head and started talking to Aaron about pack training next week like nothing had happened.

I looked away, my stomach twisting uncomfortably.

“Why aren’t you eating?” Ajax asked, nudging me with his foot.

“Just not that hungry,” I said, tearing my eyes off of Zane.

Ajax gave me a look but didn’t push it.

I picked at the fries while my thoughts spiralled.

Lia had sounded like she was making suggestions. But Zane hadn’t responded like a boyfriend.

He didn’t tease her. He didn’t argue. He didn’t even pout or whine about it.

He’d responded like a soldier.

Like she’d given an order and he’d followed it.

Did either of them even realise it?

Maybe it was just their bond. Maybe that was how mates worked.

But I’d seen others. Sheila and Aaron still fought like cats and dogs over what to watch on movie nights. Other couples in our pack disagreed too, ever so often.

But Zane-he wasn’t acting mated. He was acting controlled.

I glanced back at them.

Something didn’t sit right with me.

He poked her waist, and she squealed, grabbing his hands.

“Stop,” she laughed.

I held my breath, waiting to see what he’d do..

But Zane poked her again, a smirk on his face..

“I’m gonna smack you,” she warned, raising her handl.

“Do it,” he challenged, grabbing both her wrists.

“Zane,” she trailed off, voice laced with fear. “Don’t do it.”””

He stared at her, their gazes locked.

Then he proceeded to tickle her, making her scream loud! enough to turn every head in the restaurant.

Zane laughed, letting go of her hands and pulling her to his chest. “Goddess, Lia, you’re ? baby.”

“I told you not to,” she cried, burying her face in his chest from embarrassment.

Zane continued to laugh, then kissed her hair, whispering in her ear.

She slapped his arm, whining again.

I released a slow breath, shoulders sagging with relief.

Maybe I was overanalysing the situation.

Maybe he’d simply listened to her because she was right. Zane had to care for his body more than usual. He’d almost died.

She was probably just being a good mate. And he was listening because he loved her.

Not because of anything else.

I glanced at the fries, picking up one and popping it into my mouth.

It was delicious.

-CAITLYN’S POV-

“No!” I screamed, pulling at the handle with all my might. “Open up!”

The door refused to budge.

Behind me, there were low growls, deep, guttural ones.

My heart knocked against my ribs as I slowly turned around, legs trembling, my breaths coming hard.

Blake still sat on the bed, staring at me, his eyes darker than midnight. He had a hand pressed to his throat where I’d cut him, and his jaw was clenched. He slowly stood up, and the shaking of my body amplified, my hands flying to the handle again, trying to break open the door.

He took his time to walk over to me, his steps predatory, each one of them bringing me closer to my doom.

Oh God.

I was an idiot.

Years of training wasted.

Everything I’d learnt was useless when it actually came down to it.

I should’ve been smarter. I should have thought it through.

Why did I do this?
