I wrapped my arms around his neck and pulled him down, tightly clutching him against me. He was still shivering as he hugged me back.
“What happened to you?” I whispered, my fingers grabbing onto his hair. “Where did you go? What happened?”
Zane was silent for a moment, like he was choosing what to say. “I… I was here, wasn’t I?”
“No,” I replied, sitting up now. He sat up as well, and I climbed into his lap, grabbing onto his shirt by the collar. “You were here physically, but mentally, you were elsewhere, Zane. I could see it. It was… it was like…” I took a deep breath to gather the courage to say the words. “It was like you were gone again.”
He opened his mouth to respond, then stopped. He brushed my hair away from my face and cupped my cheeks.
“I’m not going anywhere, my love,” he said softly, his eyes. boring into mine. “I am right here, by your side. Always. It promise, Lia. That nightmare is over. You will never lose me again.”
I shook my head, my throat burning with the sobs I held back.
“Those are just words, Zane,” I said. “I would believe them an hour ago. But I know what I saw just now. I know what I felt. You were cold. You-your eyes were hollow and lifeless. It was like seeing you dead all over again. What is happening to you, Za-“
“Shh…” he cut me off, pressing his index finger against my lips.
I released a trembling breath, staring at him.
Zane used his free hand to take mine, and pressed it against his chest. Against his heart.
“You feel that, don’t you?” he asked gently.
I swallowed, nodding.
“That means I’m alive.”
I looked away from him, defeated.
“Look at me,” he whispered, lowering his finger from my lips to my chin, and turning my face towards him. Then he leaned in even closer, until our lips were mere inches away. “Do you feel the heat of my breath when I talk?”
I shivered. “Yeah.”
“You’re half wolf too. Do you hear my heartbeat? My blood pumping through my body?”
I nodded.
“Do you see me talking to you, touching you, and being absolutely in love with you?”
I sighed. “Yes.”
“Then I’m alive. And I’ll stay alive. Because… because you’re not gonna let me die, right?” he chuckled softly.
I stared at him, something strange spreading in my chest.
There was something odd in his gaze.
I couldn’t put my finger on it.
But it seemed like he wasn’t just comforting me.
He was comforting himself too.
I closed the space between us, crashing my lips against his.
His arms instantly went around me to hold me close, and he kissed me back with no hesitation or delay.
I rested my forehead against his, placing my hands on his shoulders to keep me grounded in him.
“There is no power in this world who can take you from me Zane,” I promised, looking him in the eye. “I will fight Selene herself if I have to. But no one gets to take you away anymore.” My eyes blazed again, bright and purple. “I will not allow it.”
His heartbeat picked up, but a relieved smile took over his lips.
“You better not,” he said softly, holding me tighter. “My little Lia.”
-LIA’S POV-
I wanted to tell him I loved him.
But before the words would leave my mouth, my stomach roared like a dinosaur, cutting me off.
I blinked, the heat of my eyes dying down.
Zane grinned, mischief glinting in his eye.
The way my heart warmed at that look on his face.
I’d missed it more than words could express.
“Someone’s hungry,” he poked my tummy, making me squeal.
“Don’t do that,” I scolded, smiling.
“What do you wanna eat?” he asked, wrapping his arms around my waist.
“You, honestly,” I replied.
Zane cocked up a brow. “I’m supposed to say that, not you.”
I laughed. “Why? Do I not have feelings?”
“I don’t know, you tell me. You’re a goddess, after all. Aren’t you above human emotions like feelings?”
I smiled as warmth spread through my chest.
My stomach grumbled again, ruining yet another moment of quiet fondness.
Zane laughed, shaking his head. “We need to leave. You can’t stay hungry for longer. You’re starving.”
“I’m fine,” I cried, shaking with giggles. “God, my body is trying to embarrass me.”
“Let’s go,” he said, climbing off the bed.
I did the same, taking his hand and linking our fingers together. “What if we take the Hounds too?” I asked.
Zane frowned. “Am I not enough for you anymore, high and mighty Goddess Lia?”
I shot him a look. “I just want some normalcy. Like the last time we hit that burger spot.”
Zane snorted. “Nothing was normal about that outing. And you’re right, we actually pretty much ‘hit’ it. That poor joint was left in shambles after we left.”
I laughed, covering my face. “That’s not what I meant.”
“That’s exactly what you meant, love. Don’t try to cover it up now. You just wanna go there and scare some humans with your new powers.”
-CAITLYN’S POV-
Blake returned to my room with a new tray of food after about two hours.
Maybe he was giving me time to starve so I’d be more cooperative when he’d come back.
Unfortunately, it worked.
I was famished.
Still, I looked away from him, my knees pulled to my chest as I sat with my back against the headboard.
Blake walked closer, and then sat down a safe distance away from me, placing the tray beside him.
“Don’t you have plans, Caitlyn?” he asked, making me raise a brow. I glanced at him. “To overthrow werewolves? Kill them all? I don’t think you can do that if you die in here.”
I gulped, rolling my eyes and looking away again.
Blake sighed.
“Please, sweetheart, don’t make me force you to eat.”
“I’m not your sweetheart,” I snapped. “My name is Caitlyn.”
“Are you going to eat or do I have to tie you to a chair for it?” he asked.
I glared at him. “I dare you to try.”
Blake’s eyes turned black, and he stood up, instantly making me regret it.
“Wait, wait!” I yelled, standing up on the bed and backing into the corner. “Okay,” I raised my hands. “I’m eating. I’m eating, you-you don’t have to do that.”
