“About your question,” he continued, “mates work that way. When we complete our bond by ‘mating’, we might be able to hear each other’s thoughts at times. We’d be able to feel each other’s pain, and each other’s happiness too. In flesh, we’d be two different people. But our souls would intertwine and become one.”
Wow.
That sounded… incredible.
I wanted that. I wanted to share everything with Zane.
“Okay,” I said, making his eyebrows shoot up.
“What?”
“Okay,” I said again, looking him in the eye. “I’m ready, Zane. I want that. There is nothing else I want more.”
Zane rested one hand near my head and propped himself up, removing a huge chunk of his weight from on top of me.
I missed it instantly. I wanted to be crushed underneath him. To feel everything that went on inside his body, under his skin and below his flesh and blood. Every single thing which was a whisper of him being alive.
Of him being right here. Within my reach. Pressed against me
“Okay, my love, you have no idea how happy that makes me,” he said. “I just need some time to prepare everything.”
I frowned. “Prepare everything? Like what?”
“I don’t know, I have to ask Aaron.”
“Ask Aaron what?” I let out a chuckle.
“Ask him what I need to do to make it most comfortable and fun for you,” he replied. “I don’t want to rush into it, Lia. I want it to be the most memorable experience of your life. Not like the mark.”
A shiver swept through me at the memory of that.
“Forget what happened with the mark,” I said, resting my hands against his chest. “Zane, I want you right now. Right here, in this bed. I don’t want to wait anymore.”
“But you didn’t even have this idea in your head when you came. I put it there by saying it. I don’t know if you want this, Lia.”
I stared into his eyes, my gaze full of sincerity.
“Zane Adams, I want you. With every inch of my body. Every bit of my soul. I want all of you. There are no doubts in my heart. or mind. And I don’t need special preparations. I trust you, and whatever your instinct tells you to do. If I can trust you with my life, you think I can’t trust you with my body?”
Zane blinked a couple of times, but I heard the way his heart raged.
A small smile crawled onto his face.
“You really mean that? Wouldn’t you rather it happen somewhere nice? Somewhere worthy of you? Or at a better time?”
I traced a hand down the side of his cheek, smiling at him.
“Anywhere you are is worthy of me. And what better time than now-after almost losing each other? I want to feel your fear as you make me yours, Zane… the fear you felt when you thought you’d lost me. And as I give myself to you, I want you to feel my desperation too. To understand the pain I went through when I thought I’d never see you again. I don’t want to feel that way again. And I don’t want you to either. Going through with this. will make us one. What better way to heal our wounds?”
-ZANE’S POV-
Lia was right.
That was the whole point of having mates in the first place.
Your soul mate was supposed to help you get through tough times. Be your anchor. Remind you why staying good, composed and alive was worth it.
And what could be a worse time than this?
Maybe being close to her would actually help me.
Maybe the nightmares and visions would finally stop.
Maybe as I’d lose myself in her embrace, I would finally be able to forget. To wipe those memories from my head.
The memories of… dying.
A shiver crawled down my spine.
Lia’s eyebrows drew together, and she blinked up at me with concern in her gaze.
“It’s okay if you don’t want to,” she said softly. “I understand you had certain plans for our first time. A vision. You wanted to make it perfect. And if that’s what you want, I’m happy to wait.”
I didn’t know what I ever did to deserve someone like her.
Why the Goddess chose someone as cruel as me for her daughter.
I wasn’t even a good person.
I’d let my Hounds bully her for years. Just for pointless ‘fun’.
And still, she was mine today.
She had loved me enough to bring me back to life.
Did she even know she’d done that? That I’d actually died that night and came back?
I couldn’t tell her. She was better off not knowing.
I leaned in and brushed my lips against hers, closing my eyes as the cool tingles filled every inch of me.
Her heart beat rhythmically against mine as I pressed closer to her, wrapping my arms around her waist again.
I pulled away to stare into her eyes.
Those eyes that made everything okay.
“I love you, Lia. And you’re right. No matter where it happens, and how it happens, it’s gonna be perfect. Because it’s with you. That’s all that matters.” I pushed her hair away from her face, cupping her cheek. “I want you. Right now. Without wasting any more time. Will you be mine, Lia Snow?”
The smile that stretched across her lips turned my heart into a stupid little puddle.
I grinned back at her, narrowing my eyes.
“Well? You just gonna smile at me or say yes?”
She laughed, then nodded. “Yes,” she whispered. “Yes, I’ll be yours.”
Her heart rate picked up, and that was my cue.
I claimed her mouth again, my hands travelling to her back, under her shirt.
She arched closer to me, grabbing onto the material of my shirt, her back covering in goosebumps beneath my touch.
I broke the kiss to move onto her jaw, her cheeks, her nose, forehead, and then down to her neck.
Her fingers dug into my shoulders as I reached her mark, the sensation sending waves of pleasure through her body. I knew because the same happened to me, even though the mark wasn’t on my neck.
“Zane,” she cried breathlessly, her body curling against mine. “Bite me again.”
I obliged without missing a beat.
My canines dug into her skin, and she screamed, turning her face away to give me more access.
She shivered against me, soft moans leaving her lips, until I withdrew my teeth from her neck and licked the blood clean.
“Sorry,” I murmured against her skin.
“For what?” she whispered, chuckling.
I met her gaze, and then everything within me stilled.
Her eyes were glowing violet.
They used to be beautiful. Mesmerising. Even ethereal.
But not anymore.
My heart pounded in my chest, and darkness spilled in from all sides.
I was standing in a void.
Alone.
In complete and overwhelming darkness.
My voice was suppressed. I tried to shout, but nothing came out.
