But moments passed by, and Zane kept staring at himself, not even turning to me, not saying a word.
Almost as if he didn’t sense me from a mile away. Didn’t smell me.
Didn’t even hear me come in.
-LIA’S POV-
I waited a moment for him to turn, to look away from the mirror.
But the moment stretched out too long and I couldn’t hold back anymore.
“Zane?” I said, my disappointment seeping into my voice.
He turned at once, and his eyes widened, then immediately filled up with the love and adoration I was used to.
“Lia,” he said, opening his arms.
I rushed up to him without wasting a second, throwing my arms around him.
Zane laughed, lifting me off the ground, his back hitting the mirror. “Ow,” he muttered, chuckling. “I’m happy to see too.” you
I melted into his arms, face nuzzling into his neck as relief flooded through me.
“Didn’t you sense me come in?” I asked. “I thought you don’t like me anymore.”
Zane pulled away just enough to meet my gaze. “Love, I literally died for you two weeks ago. And then came back because you asked me to. You’re still unsure whether I like you?”
I pursed my lips, then gave him a goofy grin. “Yes.”
He chuckled, kissed my nose, then shook his head. “I like you, Lia Snow. More than I like myself. That’s saying a lot because I’m a pretty cool guy.”
I snort-laughed. “God, I missed you.”
I pressed my lips against his, letting the sparks dance through my body and warm my heart.
Zane’s hold on me tightened as he kissed me back, with much more passion than I expected.
His hands slipped under my shirt, pressing tightly against the skin of my lower back, as if he wanted to feel every inch of my existence. As if he wouldn’t get to hold me again.
I didn’t blame him.
After everything that went down, we were both quite shaken up, even if we didn’t admit it to anyone.
Both of us almost lost each other.
We almost died.
And this, right now, felt like a second chance. Not just at life, but at our love.
We wanted to make the most out of it.
I didn’t realise how long we were kissing, until Zane sighed heavily against my lips.
I realised mine were getting numb too.
I broke the kiss and leaned my forehead against his, glad that he was holding me up in his arms so we were at eye level.
“Zane,” I whispered, my fingers playing with the hair at the base of his neck.
“Yes, love?”
I didn’t say anything for a moment.
“Zane,” I muttered again, only to hear him respond.
“Yes, darling? What is it?”
I hummed softly, kissing his nose.
He pressed his cheek to mine, then lightly traced his lips all over my face. I kept my eyes shut, relishing in the touch, in the warmth, in the sparks of his life.
“I couldn’t feel them,” I said, my voice cracking.
He paused what he was doing, but I pulled his face against mine. again, nudging him to go on.
He obliged, but began planting gentle kisses to my cheeks too.
“The sparks,” I explained, my grip tightening around him. “When… when you lay there unconscious… I couldn’t feel the sparks. I touched you, but… there was only stillness.”
My lips quivered as the words left my mouth, the realisation of it making my heart squeeze in my chest.
Zane held me tighter against himself, then carried me to the bed, laying me down and climbing on top of me.
He put all his weight onto my body-or maybe he was holding back some of it, I couldn’t tell-and rested his head on my shoulder.
“Do you feel them now?” he asked, slipping his hands under my shirt again.
I hummed, my fingers digging into his back. “Yes.”
“I’m right here, my love. I’m not going anywhere. I will always be by your side.”
“Yes,” I nodded, “yes you will. That’s a command.”
Zane chuckled. “You don’t have to command me for that. I’d stay with you even if you commanded me not to.”
My cheeks heated up. “Really?”
“Yes,” he replied without hesitation.
“I might have to test that one day,” I teased.
“Sure. I’m telling you what’s gonna happen,” he replied.
I gently pushed him back to look into his eyes.
Those vibrant pools of blue. My entire world.
“I missed you, Zane. School sucks without you. Everything feels like shit when you’re not around. I want to-I want to be inside. your skin. I want us to be one person, to never be separated again. Does that make sense?”
Zane smiled down at me, leaning in and pressing a soft kiss to my mouth. “Yes,” he replied against my lips. “That’s actually very possible to do.”
My eyes widened. “Really? How?”
His eyes darkened as he stared at me. “We could complete the bond, Lia. Give ourselves to each other. Become true mates. Are you ready for that?” He glided his thumb across my check, his gaze hopeful. “Because I am,” he added softly.
-LIA’S POV-
My heart gave a loud thump in my chest.
I blinked up at him, suddenly very conscious of our position.
I was trapped underneath him, on his bed.
It was the safest place in the world, and yet after what he said, goosebumps covered my skin.
“How…” I cleared my throat, “how would that achieve what I want? I mean, us being one person isn’t actually possible, right?” I forced a laugh.
Zane narrowed his eyes at me.
“I’ll answer that in a bit, but why do you look so uncomfortable right now?”
I bit my lip, my cheeks flaming.
He raised a brow.
“My love, we’ve been together for quite some time now. Why do you still get so nervous around me?”
“I don’t know,” I muttered, looking away from him. “I have a crush on you.”
Zane chuckled, leaning in and nudging my nose with his. “I have a crush on you too. You’re the most beautiful girl I’ve ever met.”
“So there could be someone more beautiful out there and you just haven’t met them?”
“No,” he replied, “don’t try to start an argument.”
I grinned.
