“Thanks,” I said, taking it. The cold plastic jolted my senses awake a bit.
“Nathan told me he imagines a future with me,” she said immediately, like it was world-shattering
I blinked at her.
She waited for my reaction. news
I tried to force one. “Wow,” I smiled. “Seriously?”
++++
She nodded, grinning. “And he said he wants me to meet his parents soon. Can you believe this? This whole time, I thought only I liked him. Like it was a one sided crush. But here he is, treating me like I’m his future wife.”
“That’s… wild,” I said, sipping the coffee.
And it was. Objectively.
But I couldn’t make myself care.
Not even a little.
Inside, I felt detached.
It all felt so pointless. So… small.
Christy kept talking, still animated, still loyal, still the same best friend who’d follow me into hell without hesitation. Who took a blow on her head to protect me. I watched her, and I loved her, I really did.
But I could barely hear her over my own thoughts.
The power that had burst through me that night still hummed beneath my skin. Still called to me when I was alone. I hadn’t tested it again. Not really. But red the feeling.
The control.
The absolute power.
And it scared me.
But it also thrilled me.
My gaze drifted out the window beside the lockers. The world outside looked softer. The sky ky was pale blue. Students laughed as they crossed the courtyard.
Zane had almost died.
Would’ve died.
–
If I hadn’t…
I swallowed, my throat dry despite the coffee.
What if I had brought him back? What if he died and I spoke, and the universe listened? What did that mean?
What else could I command?
What else could I bend?
“And then she threw her smoothie at him,” Christy finished, laughing, pulling me back into the moment.
I blinked again. “Wait, what?”
Christy gave me a look. “Lia,” she cried, disappointed. “You’re totally out of it.”
“Sorry,” I said quickly. “I didn’t sleep much.”
Her gaze softened. “You okay?”
“Yeah.” I smiled. It felt real enough. “Just… adjusting.”
“Yeah. This place sucks,” she said, wrinkling her nose. “But hey, we’re back. We’ve got coffee. Everyone we love is alive. You’re not grounded anymore. That’s a win, right?”
Yeah. She was right. It was a win.
No matter how I got it.
I laughed softly. “Sure.”
She grinned. “See you in class?”
“Yeah. I’ll be right there.”
She left with a wave.

I stood there for a second longer, sipping the coffee, forcing myself to actually taste it.
Then I followed her to class, letting my thoughts drift away again.
-CAITLYN’S POV-
“No,” I said, glaring up at him. “You’re lying. They couldn’t have ran.”
The Order would never do that.
They hated werewolves. They never left a mission incomplete.
They couldn’t have left without putting an end to Zane’s pack.
It’s not how they operated.
“It’s what happened, Caitlyn, whether you believe it or not.” Blake shrugged.
I stared at him, my face hard.
“Your precious Lia and her friends were outnumbered. We had the best weapons. There were poisonous grenades, mind-controlled werewolves and bombs. Zane and his pack could not have won this battle, Blake. Not even with your pack to help.”
Blake stared back at me, blinking twice.
He then leaned in, and I sucked in a breath, tightly jamming my head against the door.
His green eyes bore into me, the shade reminding me of emeralds.
“The Order could have brought weapons from the entire world, and still, they’d be a joke in front of Lia. You have no idea what you were up against, Caitlyn, and that is exactly why I had to kidnap you and bring you here. Do you think I wanted to do this?” He scoffed.
My throat felt dry. I frowned at him, my jaw still clenched.
“You didn’t bring me here to protect me,” I hissed. “Do not try to get into my head. I am immune to your tricks, Blake Walker. I’m not some idiot human girl desperate for someone to love her.”
Blake’s eyes narrowed a little, and he leaned further in, making me squeeze my eyes shut. My toes curled under me to keep my feet from trembling.
He was too close. His breath traced over my lips.
“I think, you’re so desperate for love, that you’d fight against an army of supernatural creatures to find it. Do you really think I didn’t do my research about you?”
My eyes shot open at that, throat starting to close up. I knew what reflected in my gaze, and I hated how I couldn’t hide it.
I was supposed to be in more control of my emotions,
I was supposed to be a hardened soldier.
Not a little girl who wore her emotions on her face.
Blake leaned away, allowing me some air. His gaze softened.
“When I saw Lia for the first time, and realised that she was my mate, I didn’t approach her at once. I took my time, learning about her, getting to know more about her. Her likes, her dislikes. Who her friends were. And her enemies.” He chuckled softly. “I even went the extra mile and dyed my hair blonde before I met her. Just because her laptop wallpaper was a game character with bleached hair. She never even realised it when my real hair grew at the roots. She didn’t comment when I dyed it all back to brown again. I’d thought I’d gain an edge by doing all of this, but… I guess a part of her was already too bonded to Zane years before I even met her.”
An unwelcome discomfort spread through me. I raised a brow at him. “Are you fishing for sympathy?”
“No,” he shook his head, “I’m just telling you the lengths I’m willing to go. For the person created for me. I had thought it was her, but I was wrong.”
My breath caught in my throat.
No.
Don’t you dare say it.
