Sapphire was unlike anyone I’d met. Beautiful, sure. Sharp-tongued. Brave. But there were moments where her presence felt too much. Too loud, even in silence. Like she was always watching me, measuring something I couldn’t see.

It made my heart pound.

“I don’t know if what I feel around her is real or something she made me feel,” I said honestly.

Zane nodded, like he understood. “You’ll figure it out.”

“If she tries to trick you, we’ll gut her, Warner,” Aaron said.

“I’ll gut her myself,” I replied.

And I meant it.

Even if part of me hoped it wouldn’t ever come to that.

Even if part of me already missed her.

-LIA’S POV-

(Trigger Warning)

I was back in the clearing again.

The trees were too tall. Too thin. Stretched up like bony fingers, as if reaching to grab clouds off the sky.

The moon hovered low above the tree line-red and swollen, almost pulsing like a beating heart. I didn’t remember walking here. I didn’t even remember waking up.

But I was barefoot.

And the ground was warm.

There was something wet under my feet. Something sticky.

I looked down.

Blood.

My breath caught.

It soaked into the earth in a slow, spiraling pattern, curling around the tips of my toes. But I couldn’t move. Couldn’t speak. The air felt thick..

“Lia.”

The voice was familiar.

I turned towards it at once, heart racing.

Zane stood at the center of the clearing. He smiled at me, but it didn’t reach his eyes.

He was shirtless. Just like the battle.

And his chest was ripped open.

Ribs split apart, blood streaming down his legs, staining his jeans. His eyes were cloudy, unfocused. But he smiled anyway.

“Hi,” he said.

“Zane,” I breathed, stumbling towards him. I wanted to collapse. My hands trembled. “You’re hurt, we have to-“

“I waited for you.”

I paused.

“What?” I whispered, blinking at him. “Waited? For what?”

“For you to fix it,” he said, tilting his head. “You’re the goddess, right?” froze. “No-no, I didn’t-“

“You brought me back once,” he said, that awful smile stretching wider, splitting at the corners. “Do it again.”

Tears filled my eyes. I nodded hurriedly. “Yes… yes, I’ll-I’ll fix you. Zane, uh, heal.”

He stared at me, his grin feeling eerie now.

His eyes seeming hollow.

Like he was dead.

“It’s not working,” he sang softly, chuckling like it was funny and terrifying all the same. “Hurry, please?”

The tremor in his voice caught me in a chokehold.

I took a deep breath, gathering my strength, accumulating every bit of conviction I could muster.

“Zane,” I said, “I command you to heal. Heal.”

He glanced down at his chest, his legs shaking uncontrollably now.

Nothing happened. Nothing pulled together. Nothing was fixed.

He glanced at me again, disappointment seeping into hist expression.

Yet, that awful smile remained stretched across his lips.

A red tear rolled down his cheek.

I realised he wasn’t blinking. Not even once.

“It’s okay,” he said, voice pained. “Not your fault.”

Before I could register it, his legs buckled. He dropped to his knees.

Then his hands.

Then his face hit the dirt.

I screamed, rushing forward, dropping beside him, flipping him over.

He wasn’t breathing.

“Zane-Zane, no-don’t do this to me,” I whispered, hands shaking as I pressed down on his chest, trying to push the blood back in, trying to stop the way it bubbled out of him. “I just got you back,” I sobbed. “I just got you back. Please. No.”

He stared at me still. Smiling. But unmoving.

There was no heartbeat.

The world felt expendable again. Crashing all around me like glass.

“I command you,” I whispered. “Live. Please.”

Nothing.

“I said live,” I snapped, louder now, voice cracking. back!”

His body twitched.

But not like someone coming back.

Like something… settling.

His eyes rolled back.

His jaw slackened.

“Come

Then-slowly-his skin began to sag. Like it was melting off the bone.

“Zane-” I grabbed his shoulders, shaking him, but his skin stuck to my hands. I screamed, horrified, backing away from him.

His cheeks caved in.

His lips peeled back into a grotesque grin.
