Even then, Calvert, despite having a full scholarship and working diligently, could only just make enough to support himself.

“Don’t worry about the money,” Harley said. “I’m the one who wanted your father to be hospitalized for examination and treatment. Naturally, you don’t have to pay for it.”

“But you’re not obligated to pay this money!” Calvert insisted, “I will definitely pay it back!”

“If you insist on paying me back, that’s fine. Whenever you have the money in the future, you can repay me then,” Harley said with a smile. He handed Calvert a business card. “This is the head of a modeling agency. They’re looking for part-time models. If you’re interested, you could give it a try.”

Calvert took the business card, staring blankly at the company name, address, and contact number on it.

“A model?”

“Your looks are pretty good, you could give it a shot. This is a decent part-time gig. If you really manage to pass the audition, you could do some photoshoots afterward. The pay is pretty good too,” Harley said.

Calvert pursed his thin lips, could he really be a model?

And also, he had accepted Harley’s help.

Was this help, in Harley’s view, a form of charity? Did Harley think he was so pitiful that he was giving him a job out of pity?

“There’s no need for that, I know exactly who I am,” Calvert said, handing the business card back to

Harley. “I appreciate Miss Hart’s kindness, but I don’t need charity!”

Calvert didn’t want to appear even more pitiful in front of Harley!

“Charity?” Harley was taken aback.

Calvert, however, turned around and left.

Harley quickly caught up and grabbed the other person’s hand, “Explain yourself, what do you mean by charity?”

Calvert paused, his gaze falling on the hand Harley used to grab him.

“So, you’re giving me this job opportunity out of pity, is that it? Regardless of whether I’m capable of doing the job, they’ll hire me just because I show up. Then I can earn a decent income and improve my life. And for you, this is just a simple thing you can do. I know I should be grateful, thank you for your sympathy and for this favor, but I…”

Calvert’s voice was getting softer and softer, the remaining words seemed to be stuck in his throat.

Every word he uttered felt like he was slowly laying out his embarrassment in front of her.

“I don’t want to accept this kind of charity… Even if it’s the kindness of a wealthy person like you, but…

but I’m physically healthy, I can support myself…” Calvert lowered his head, it took almost all his strength to say these words.

Calvert didn’t want to always feel inferior in front of Harley. He didn’t want to be the one pitied by her, the one she felt she had to take care of.

That made him feel like he was nothing more than a beggar!

“Of course, you can support yourself. I didn’t introduce this job to you out of charity. I just wanted to give you an opportunity. Whether you can seize it and improve your life depends on your abilities,”

Harley’s voice rose. “I specifically told them, if you’re not suitable, they shouldn’t hire you. After all, a job obtained through connections won’t last long.”

Calvert was stunned.

“Also, I do feel some sympathy for you, but it’s not exactly pity. I’m offering you this job because I think you’re really beautiful and you might have potential in this field. Of course, if you don’t want to accept it, you can refuse right now. Do you want to refuse?” Harley asked.

Calvert’s body stiffened a bit, his wrist, held by Harley, becoming unbearably hot.

Did he turn down the opportunity she offered him?

He was going to refuse anyway, wasn’t he? Because he didn’t want to appear like a pitiful creature.

But when he heard what she said, he hesitated.

“Are you going to refuse?” Harley’s voice echoed once again.

Calvert lifted his head, staring blankly at the person in front of him.

Harley’s beautiful face was intently watching him at that moment. Her gaze never held the arrogance often seen in the wealthy. Instead, it was just an ordinary look.

It was like Harley was just treating him as an equal.

“Do you really think I’m cut out for this job?” he asked awkwardly.

“If we’re just talking about your looks, you definitely have what it takes. You must know that you have a face that’s easy to fall for,” Harley said. “But being a model isn’t just about having a pretty face.

Whether you get this job or not also depends on your skills. So, what’s your answer now?”

Calvert pressed his lips together tightly, and after a good while, he finally said, “Alright, I’ll give it a try!”

Since Harley wasn’t given charity, he should have temporarily set aside his inferiority complex and given this opportunity a shot!

This was the opportunity Harley had given him, and he had a hunch that he must seize it well.

Otherwise, he might feel increasingly inferior in front of her for the rest of his life!

Harley was too dazzling, too far out of his reach.

If he wanted to get closer to her, he had to make some changes, rather than just accepting the unfairness that fate had dealt him without making any changes at all.

“Great! Go for it!” Harley said with a smile.

This was a simple word of encouragement, yet it filled Calvert’s heart with a wave of warmth.

This was her kindness, and the smile she showed him made him irresistibly want to take a few more glances, wishing for her to reveal more smiles to him. For this, he could become even more diligent, striving to seize the opportunity she had given him!

A few days later, Harley received a call from the boss of the company where Calvert had interviewed for a modeling job.

“Miss Hart, the newcomer you recommended is quite impressive. They have strong comprehension and performance skills, and their physical appearance is also quite good. If we package them well, they could potentially become famous!” the other person said.

“Then, I’d appreciate it if you could look after him a bit,” Harley said. “But I don’t want him to receive any special treatment because of me. I hope he can prove himself with his own abilities.”

“Alright, I got it!” The other person kept agreeing.

However, Harley understood that even though she had made such arrangements, Calvert, being her recommendation, would still receive some preferential treatment.

In the end, how far Calvert went depended on his own efforts. After all, some destinies could not be manipulated by power.

This was a path that ordinary people could take to reach the clouds. But could Calvert do the same?

However, after this, Harley didn’t see Calvert again. He only saw Calvert’s photos in some magazines and heard his name mentioned occasionally in conversations among his schoolmates.

“I really didn’t expect that the boy you saved back then has now become a model,” Karen exclaimed. “I heard you even helped him get the job?”

“How did you know?” Harley raised an eyebrow and asked.

Karen chuckled, “In that kind of circle, what secrets could there be? Besides, Calvert is starting to make a name for himself now. There are plenty of people who are jealous of him. Who knows, they might even drag you into it in the future!”

“I just thought his looks were suited for this path, so I recommended a job to him. As for what happens next, that’s his own business.” She and Calvert, in the end, didn’t really have much of a relationship, and she didn’t want to concern herself with other people’s lives.

“Aren’t you afraid he’ll cling to you like a lifeline and refuse to let go?” Karen asked. After all, Harley is the princess of the entertainment industry! So many people are hoping to latch onto her, to gain more resources.

“He won’t,” Harley said, thinking of how Calvert had rejected her before. That kind of person would only want to rely on himself, not on others.

“Even if you can’t do it now, you might be able to in the future. After all, people change,” Karen said.

Harley lowered his eyes, wondering if that shy yet prideful boy would ever change in the future?

Harley saw Calvert again at a charity dinner.

Calvert came along with his agency’s boss. As a newbie in the modeling industry, such treatment is rare.

Calvert was dressed in a black suit, his bangs combed back to reveal his full forehead. He looked less like a naive schoolboy and more like a mature man.

Harley watched from a distance as Calvert chatted with the people around him, a faint smile playing on his lips. He looked like a completely different person.

In the large dye vat that was the entertainment industry, how many people could truly remain unchanged?

Perhaps Karen was right, people did change.

Harley, holding a glass of red wine, stepped out to the garden of the banquet for some fresh air.

At today’s banquet, since her parents couldn’t make it due to some matters, she attended on behalf of the Hart family to make a donation.

Even though it was a charity banquet, she still felt a sense of discomfort that permeated the event.

Moreover, she was surrounded by people who wanted to curry favor with her, making her quite uncomfortable. Especially after she broke off her engagement with Lornell, the number of young and talented men appearing before her noticeably increased.

She naturally understood what these people were up to, but she just didn’t like them very much.

Harley finally reached the garden, letting out a long sigh of relief. She finally felt alive again.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps echoed from behind her.

Harley frowned. It seemed that even coming to this place couldn’t bring her peace!

Just as she was about to leave, a familiar voice rang out: “Long time no see!”

Harley froze. This voice was…

She turned around, looking at the person standing behind her. It was Lornell, her former fiancé!

After breaking off their engagement, this was actually the first time they had met.

“Long time no see!” She replied politely.

Lornell gazed at Harley, “How have you been lately?”

“It’s okay,” she said nonchalantly.

“After we broke off our engagement, you never reached out to me again. I thought, even though we ended our engagement, we’ve known each other for so many years, we should still be friends,” he said.

Harley gently lowered his eyelids, wondering, “Are we friends?”

From the very beginning, she didn’t see him as a friend, but as someone she could spend her entire life with.

When she became his fiancée, she remembered that he was her benefactor, the person she needed to repay with gratitude, and the one she wanted to be with forever.

Just like her daddy and mommy, always together.

Their beginning was like something out of a fairy tale.
