I smiled, breathing hard.
Then, he laughed, wiping the smile off my face.
“Goddess,” he chuckled, lifting me up like I weighed nothing. “You’re so scary.”
“What are you doing?” I shrieked as he carried me towards the bed.
I kicked my feet in the air, bending my head to bite his arm, I couldn’t reach it.
Blake reached the bed and kicked it, pushing it all the way into the corner of the room, so that the headboard and one side was against the wall. He then walked over to it, throwing me onto the mattress.
Shivers crawled through me.
I immediately tried to climb off again, but he pushed me back again, making me fall on my back. Before I could sit up again, Blake climbed in too, making me gasp and shuffle away from him. I found myself cornered, trapped between him and the walls.
My hands trembled, breath hitching.
“Stay where you are, unless you want me to pin you down,” Blake warned, his expression hard.
My chest heaved, and I clenched my fists to hide that I was. shaking.
“Good girl,” he said softly. “Take deep breaths now. Your heartbeat is crazy. I don’t want you to pass out.”
I swallowed, my throat feeling like sandpaper.
I obeyed, not because I was afraid, but because he was right.
I could almost hear the pounding of my heart. I couldn’t afford to faint. I didn’t want to be at his mercy again.
“What… what did you to me?” I whispered, then immediately. regretted it.
Fear had seeped into my voice, making me sound like a pathetic damsel. Just the kind I’d pretended to be when I first met him.
“Nothing,” Blake replied, his tone controlled and gentle, like he was speaking to a child.
My jaw clenched with annoyance.
I wasn’t a scared little girl.
I was a huntress. I was from The Order.
He didn’t have to feign kindness. It wouldn’t fool me..
“Why did you bring me here?” I spat, my tone filled with venom. “What do you want from me?”
Blake stared at me, his green eyes darkening slightly. He was silent for a moment, after which he finally replied, making me immediately regret the question.
“I think, you already know what I want from you, Caitlyn.”
-LIA’S POV-
I lay my head on his still chest, my tears wetting his skin.
The world felt disposable.
Like none of it mattered anymore.
None of it was worth even a dime.
The Hounds stood around us, silent, their heads down.
A faint breath blew against my hair.
I froze, eyes shooting open.
My heart pounded.
I didn’t have the guts to look up.
What if it wasn’t true? What if I’d imagined it?
Then a soft, quiet beat against my car.
The faint quiver of a heart.
I sat up, my eyes wide, breath caught in my throat.
I blinked, staring at him.
He was still.
“Zane?” I whispered.
The Hounds glanced up.
He didn’t move.
I pressed my car to his chest again, my head spinning.
There it was.
A pulse. Quiet, almost deafeningly slow.
But it was there. Undeniably.
“Zane,” I cried, sitting up straight. I glanced at the Hounds.
I didn’t have to say a word for them to rush up to us.
I backed away from him, and Aaron, Ajax and Warner turned back, immediately picking Zane up into his arms.
Sheila turned back too, stepping towards me, but stopped herself.
She stared at me, hesitant.
A sob left my lips, and I opened my arms, inviting. Desperate to be comforted. To be held.
She rushed to me then, pulling me to her chest, rubbing my back.
“He’ll be okay,” she promised. “He’s alive, Lia. He’ll be okay.”
And just like that, my heart was beating again.
His eyes opened slowly, now full of life again. Those gorgeous blue eyes that held galaxies within them. The eyes I’d sacrifice the universe for.
A gentle, mischievous smile stretched across his lips, and I almost sighed from how handsome he looked.
Even with the bandages wrapped around half his face. Even with his hair shaved. Even with his body covered in ugly wounds and purple bruises.
Zane Adams was still the most beautiful man I’d ever laid eyes on.
“Hey, love,” he whispered in the softest voice. “I’m back.”
A choked sob left my lips, and I fell onto his chest once more.
His chest hummed with a groan, but I didn’t care if I was hurting him.
I needed to hear his heartbeat. I needed to feel the movement.
Besides, he deserved it. you die
“How dare you?” I asked, shaking with sobs. “How dare on me? You’re a liar, Zane. You promised you’d never leave!” My voice cracked, tears streaming down my face.
“I didn’t,” he muttered, placing a bandaged hand on my hair. There were IVs attached to him, pumping his body full of painkillers and funny-smelling herbs. “I’m still here.”
“Only because I begged you to!” I snapped, sitting up and glaring at him.
Once again, he grinned, as much as he could manage. “I’ll make you beg again soon, but it’ll be on a bed.”
I deadpanned. “It’s not funny. Not at all.”
His face softened. “I’m sorry.”
“You should be. If you do this again, if you ever throw yourself in harm’s way again, I will kill you.”
“Deal,” he said, reaching towards me.
