Completely useless. Like a weak little human.

The commander didn’t rush. He didn’t need to.

He pointed the gun at my chest.

Zane tore out of the smoke like a nightmare.

He came growling, hitting the man full-force, claws slamming into his ribs. The commander didn’t even get a chance to react. Zane ripped into him, teeth finding his throat. Blood sprayed in a wide are as the gun flew from his hands. He barely made a sound-just a choking gasp-before Zane crushed him into the dirt.

It was over in seconds.

Zane shifted back before the body hit the ground.

“Lia!” he shouted, reaching for me. His hands were warm. Shaking. He pressed them to my leg, trying to stop the bleeding.

“You’re okay,” he said, more to himself than to me. “You’re okay, you’re okay-“

I grabbed his wrist. “I’m fine,” I lied, even though I was dizzy and everything hurt. “You got him.”

His jaw clenched. He wrapped an arm around me, lifting me like I weighed nothing.

“I’ve got you.”

The heat of him calmed me a little. My head fell against his chest. His heartbeat was wild, like mine.

And then I heard it.

The click.

Zane spun around, just in time to face the new soldier. Not a commander. Just another one of the dozens swarming the ruins of our home. But his weapon was different-sleeker, glowing red at the barrel.

The first shot hit Zane in the side.

He dropped me to the ground, diving to the side.

But the sound the bullet made was unreal. Not just a gunshot-a deep, ugly boom that made my ears ring again. The round exploded the second it struck, blasting into his ribs. Blood sprayed over my shoulder.

“Zane!” I screamed.

He didn’t fall. Not yet.

Another shot hit him in the chest. A third slammed into his shoulder. Exploding rounds-specially made to take down werewolves. I knew they were laced with poison and crafted from silver.

The perfect weapon to kill, not just wound.

Zane tried to shield me with his body, snarling like he could still fight. But I could feel it-the way he shook. The way his steps slowed.

“Run,” he choked out, stumbling back.

“No!”

“I said run!”

I couldn’t. Not like this. My leg was useless. And I wasn’t leaving him.

Zane lunged at the shooter, but his strength was failing. The soldier fired again, and this time the blast caught him in the side. of the neck. Zane dropped.

His body hit the ground with a heavy thud.

My breath stopped.

He wasn’t moving.

He wasn’t moving.

“No-Zane!” I crawled towards him, dragging myself over from silver.

The perfect weapon to kill, not just wound.

Lucky deser

Zane tried to shield me with his body, snarling like he could still fight. But I could feel it-the way he shook. The way his stepe slowed.

His body hit the ground with a heavy thud.

My breath stopped.

He wasn’t moving.

He wasn’t moving.

“No-Zane!” I crawled towards him, dragging myself over broken stone and blood-soaked dirt. “Zane, get up!”

The soldier raised the gun again, aiming right at me now.

I didn’t care.

It didn’t matter.

Nothing mattered, if Zane wasn’t responding.

“Zane!” I shouted.

He didn’t answer.

He didn’t move.

My throat burned with sobs, vision blurring with tears.

My hands shook uncontrollably as I pressed my ear to his chest.

Silence.

He wasn’t breathing.

-LIA’S POV-

It was over.

The battle.

The war.

The world.

Nothing mattered anymore.

Minutes passed.

Zane did not move.

His body lay limp on the floor. His eyes were still open. Still staring at me. Unblinking.

“Zane,” I sobbed, shaking him by the shoulders. I pressed his chest, trying to resuscitate him.

But half his face was blown off. Parts of his abdomen too. I hadn’t even seen his back.

How would he wake up?

He was… gone.

My sobs only got louder, everything else blurring around me.

There was a click.

The same one I’d heard before Zane was shot.
