We needed help.
Now.
-ZANE’S POV-
Blood soaked my shoulder. It wasn’t mine.
I’d taken out another one of their elite, but they were trained. Fast. Organized.
We couldn’t hold this much longer.
Then, through the chaos, a new howl cut the air. Deep and familiar.
Blake’s wolves.
They surged in from the south, dark shapes moving like liquid shadow through the trees. Ferocious. Focused. Ruthless.
They didn’t hesitate.
One of them slammed into a soldier trying to throw a gas bomb. Another caught a blade with its teeth.
I didn’t see Blake.
But I saw his pack.
Fighting for us.
-LIA’S POV-
We made it to the courtyard. Sheila was fierce, focused, and precise.
“Get the unconscious clear!” she shouted.
I saw Zane, mid-fight. A blur of muscle and fur. One of Blake’s wolves backed him up, snarling as it pinned an Order soldier by the throat.
I didn’t know what this alliance meant. Or how long it would last.
But for tonight, we were surviving.
Together.
Smoke filled my lungs.
The war had begun earlier than we’d hoped.
But we couldn’t give up. Not when everything we loved was on the line.
-LIA’S POV-
The smoke was everywhere.
I couldn’t tell where the fire ended and the night began. The pack house was somewhere behind me. Zane had been fighting near the courtyard. The Hounds were scattered. I’d been helping a kid with a broken arm and then-boom. Another blast had thrown me off my feet.
Now I was alone.
My cars rang. My legs ached. My throat burned from breathing. in whatever toxic mix The Order had thrown into the air.
“Zane?” I called out.
No answer. Just a wolf’s howl in the distance and the crackle of flames chewing through wood.
I took a few shaky steps forward, trying to find my way back. The courtyard had to be close. I just had to follow the-
A shape emerged from the mist.
I froze.
It wasn’t a wolf. It was a person. Slim build, combat boots, dark gear. A gun raised, steady.
Her eyes locked on me through the smoke. Her arm didn’t shake. Her aim was perfect.
She didn’t say anything. Just stood there with her finger curling on the trigger.
My feet wouldn’t move.
My claws didn’t come out.
My power-useless.
She was going to shoot me.
Her eyes burned with pure, raw hatred.
Why? I hadn’t done anything to her.
But they all knew me. Somehow, everyone knew who I was.
Something slammed into her from the side.
They both hit the ground hard.
I blinked, disoriented, as the sound of snarling and grunting filled the air. The girl kicked upward, nearly catching Blake in the jaw. He ducked it, grabbed her wrist, twisted until her gun clattered to the ground.
Oh. That was Caitlyn. A hundred percent.
Blake would have ripped her head off if it wasn’t.
“Still dramatic, huh?” she spat, panting.
He growled in response.
“You betrayed us, you useless piece of shit,” she spat. “You said your bond with her was broken, but look at you now, risking your life to save hers. I told you to stay out of this. Now don’t blame me for what happens.”
They kept fighting.
It wasn’t like watching warriors. It was like watching two people who knew each other too well. Every punch had history behind it. Every shove meant something. Blake was holding back. But Caitlyn wast giving it her best.
She kneed him in the stomach and tried to roll away. He caught her again, shifting back now.
“Caitlyn, stop,” Blake said, pinning her wrists.
“Get off-“
“Stop.”
She did.
Not completely. She was still breathing fast. Her jaw was clenched tight. But she stopped struggling.
For a second.
Their faces were close. Too close,
“You don’t get to say my name,” she said, voice shaking.
“I do. Because your name is meant for my lips. You are my mate, Caitlyn. And I know that you know that. That you feel this.”
“I don’t!” she snapped. “Let go of me! You jerk!”
I should’ve run. I should’ve turned around and gotten the hell out of there. But I couldn’t.
“You don’t hate me, Caitlyn.” Blake said softly. “I know you don’t. You can’t. Because you were created for me. And I for you.”
She scoffed, her eyes blazing with rage. “I would rather choke to death than to be with one of you. Let go of me.”
“You don’t want this, Caitlyn. You will regret what you’re doing. You’re drowning in hatred, and I don’t know why. Tell me. Let me help you.”
Lucky Drow
“Don’t you dare act like you know me, I don’t need your help.”
“I know you better than anyone. We have a connection. A bond. Stronger than anything human.”
“Then you should know I’m not going to stop,” Caitlyn whispered. “I will keep fighting until my last breath. So kill me if you want to end this.”
Blake’s grip faltered. Just slightly. Like the weight of her voice cracked something in him.
