His expression softened.
“I just miss being normal,” I whispered.
“I don’t think you ever were, Lia,” Zane said. “Even before all this. You were always meant for more.”
“I didn’t ask for more.”
“I know. But that doesn’t mean you can’t still choose what you want it to be.”
He brushed his fingers through my hair, gently tucking it behind my ear. I leaned into his touch without thinking.
“And what do you want it to be?” I asked.
Zane’s hand stilled for a second. “Us. I want it to be us. No matter what happens.”
I swallowed. “What if I lose myself? What if this power keeps growing, and I can’t control it? What if I become something you can’t love anymore?”
“Then I’ll fight to remind you who you are. Every day. As long as I’m breathing.”
My chest squeezed painfully. I wanted to cry, but instead I crawled closer to him, curling myself against him like I could hide from everything outside this room.
His arms wrapped around me instantly.
We stayed like that for a while. Quiet. Still.
His heart thudded under my car, steady and sure.
“Do you remember the night we first kissed?” I asked after a long time.
“Of course I do.”
“You saved my life.”
He smiled. “You saved mine.”
“No, I didn’t.”
“You have no idea,” he whispered.
I stayed silent, feeling the warmth spread through me. Not the scary kind, that came with my newfound powers. The old, soft warmth that felt like home.
I turned my head to look up at him. His eyes searched mine for a moment before he leaned down and kissed me, slowly, softly. I melted into it, holding onto his shirt like it anchored me.
When we pulled apart, I pressed my forehead to his.
“I wish we had more time,” I whispered.
“We do,” he said firmly. “We’re going to survive this. We’re
R5/0 going to win. And after that, there’ll be nothing stopping us.”
I didn’t answer. I just closed my eyes and held him tighter.
Eventually, he shifted us so we were lying down. I curled into his side, head on his chest, while he traced soft lines along my spine with his fingers.
“You should sleep,” he murmured.
“So should you.”
“I will. Just wanna keep holding you a little longer.”
I nodded against him. “Don’t let go, okay?”
“Never.”
The storm hadn’t come yet, but I could feel it in the distance. Creeping closer. The day after, we might be fighting for our lives. But tonight, we were just Lia and Zane.
And that was enough.
Zane’s hand slid under my shirt, but not in a rushed or heated way. Just warm fingers pressing gently against my back, like he needed to feel I was real. I shivered anyway as the tingles crawled through me. Sometimes I wondered if my touch affected him as much as his did me.
I let myself get lost in it. In him. In this warmth that melted away every fear I’d been carrying.
My hands roamed his back, memorizing every line, every muscle, every twitch. I wanted to learn every part of him. Who he’d been before me and who he was now.
When he pulled away just slightly, he stayed close enough that our noses brushed.
“I love you, Lia Snow,” he said.
“I know.”
He smiled. “Say it back.”
“I was waiting for the perfect moment.”
“This isn’t it?”
I grinned a little. “It’s the most perfect moment I’ve ever had.”
Then I kissed him again, intending to say it against his lips.
But growls broke out somewhere in the pack house, making both of us freeze.
We exchanged a glance, before shooting out of bed, hearts raging. in sync.
-LIA’S POV-
We ran, Zane clutching onto my wrist as we made our way down the stairs.
The growls were louder now, echoing off the walls like thunder.
We skidded around a corner, bare feet slapping against cool wood, and burst into the main hall of the packhouse.
It was chaos.
Warner had Blake by the collar, slamming him into the wall hard enough to rattle it. Aaron was inches away from another wolf-tall, broad-shouldered, dark hair and amber eyes-with his claws out. Two more unfamiliar wolves stood near the entrance, tense but not attacking.
“Back off!” Zane’s voice cracked through the tension like a whip.
Everyone froze.
Warner didn’t move. Neither did Aaron.
Zane stepped between them, shoving Warner back. “I said back off!”
“He came here!” Warner snarled. “He brought his damned pack to our door!”
“I invited him!” Zane snapped, making Warner and Aaron’s faces fall.
Sheila and Ajax rushed into the hall too, a gasp leaving Sheila’s lips when she saw Blake. Her eyes turned black, a low growl escaping her,
“Calm down.” Zane said just as Ajax stepped forward, his face hard. “He came here with my permission.”
I took a deep breath, although it didn’t do anything to relieve the tension in my chest.
My gaze set on Blake. Ilis lip was bleeding. His shirt was torn. But he didn’t look mad like the Hounds.
Just… apologetic.
“Why is he here?” Aaron growled, walking up to Zane. “Tell me. What was so important that you brought this piece of shit into our home? Where my mate is.”
Zane’s eyes turned black, his aura shifting as he met Aaron’s eye. “She might be your mate, but she is a member of my pack and one of my closest confidants. She’s my Hound. I have a duty to protect Sheila too, and I would never endanger her.” His voice was thick with command, steady and precise.
Aaron’s shoulders heaved up and down, but he fell silent, waiting for Zane to go on.
“Why is he here, then?” Ajax asked, his jaw clenched.
It was odd seeing him this way. Ajax was barely seen without a grin on his face, or amusement glinting in his eyes.
But right now, as he stared at Blake, it looked like he might kill him.
He stood protectively in front of Sheila, who looked like the last person in need of it. Her claws were out. Eyes dark. Radiating an air of danger.
Zane stepped back, facing all of them. “He’s here because he made a deal.”
“What kind of deal?” Aaron asked..
