Nancy kept telling herself this in her heart.
Thanks to her persistence, Mick stopped coming to pick her up at the hotel where she worked. They would usually agree on a meeting place, and sometimes Mick would send a driver to pick her up.
At that time, Nancy would have the driver wait for her 500
meters away from the company.
The rumors about her in the hotel finally died down.
Some people would mock her behind her back, saying that rich people were just playing with her and wouldn’t take her seriously. They would get tired of her in no time.
Nancy didn’t pay any attention to this kind of ridicule.
It was the new receptionist, Irene, who took the initiative to befriend her and apologized for bumping into her before.
“I was in a bad mood that day, so I accidentally bumped into you and didn’t apologize in time. I’m really sorry.” Irene looked guilty and even gave Nancy a teddy bear as a gift. “This little gift is just a token of my apology.”
“You don’t have to give me a gift. It was just a bump, and you’ve already apologized. It’s okay.” Nancy politely declined.
“No, please accept the gift. It represents your acceptance of my apology. If you don’t take it, I’ll feel like you haven’t forgiven me.” Irene insisted and handed the teddy bear to
Nancy.
“Okay then…” Nancy hesitated for a moment before accepting the gift.
“After work, let’s have dinner and go shopping together. I haven’t been in the company for long and haven’t made any friends yet. I hope we can be friends in the future.” Irene smiled and suggested.
“I’m afraid I can’t today. I have something to do after work.
Maybe another day!” Nancy declined.
“Do you have a date with your boyfriend?” Irene asked curiously.
“No, I don’t have a boyfriend. It’s just some personal matter.”
Nancy replied calmly.
“I see,” murmured Irene, then enthusiastically added, “Well, how about I introduce you to some of my really great friends?”
“No thanks, I’m not currently looking for a boyfriend,” Nancy declined. “Anyway, I’m busy with work now. Let’s chat later.”
After Irene left, Nancy pondered for a moment.
The other woman’s friendliness made her feel somewhat uneasy, as if Irene’s warmth towards her was insincere.
But there was no need for her to be hostile. Nancy looked at the teddy bear in her hand. Since Irene had apologized, she would just accept it.
After work, Nancy took the car that Mick had sent to pick her up and went straight to the technology building under the Reed Group.
The driver pressed the elevator button that went straight to the CEO’s office floor for her. When Nancy stepped out of the elevator, she told the secretary her name.
Obviously, Mick had already informed the secretary, so the secretary greeted her warmly after hearing her name. “Miss Fowler, Mr. Reed is in a meeting right now, but he has instructed that if Miss Fowler comes, she can wait in his office.”
With that, the secretary led Nancy to Mick’s office.
Nancy looked around the spacious office and felt like she was in one of those CEO offices from movies and TV shows.
The gray and white tones exuded a simple luxury.
And there were those large floor-to-ceiling windows that allowed one to overlook much of Emerald City when standing by them.
This building was a famous landmark in Emerald City, but it was just one of the buildings under the Reed Group.
It was clear that the Reed family, known as the wealthiest family in Emerald City, had a depth of wealth that was difficult for ordinary people to imagine.
“Would you like coffee or tea, Miss Fowler?” the secretary asked respectfully.
“The coffee is ready,” said Nancy.
After a moment, the secretary brought the coffee and left the room.
Nancy didn’t know whether to admire the secretary’s boldness for leaving her alone in Mick’s office, or to wonder if she wasn’t afraid that Nancy might steal some important documents.
However, the coffee was quite fragrant. Nancy drank it while looking around the office and imagining what it would be like for Mick to work there.
When she finished her coffee and had looked around the office, Nancy saw that Mick still hadn’t returned. So she took out her phone and logged into a small game she often played.
The game was actually quite simple, like a small game of passing levels similar to Tetris.
When she was in school, Nancy had been obsessed with games for a while and had played many of them. Because games often made people forget about the troubles of reality.
But later, when she was a junior, her relationship with Clarissa deteriorated further, so she tried not to ask her mother for living expenses and instead worked hard to earn money.
After graduation, she moved out of the Schultz family and found a job to live on her own.
So she had less time to play games, and she didn’t play the competitive games that required teaming up with others like she used to. Instead, she chose some casual and entertaining small games.
Because the office was very quiet, Nancy began to play the game with single-minded focus.
Her fingers moved quickly on the phone screen, and her game score kept rising.
One level after another, Nancy didn’t even know how many levels she had passed. At this moment, all her attention was focused on her phone, and she didn’t even notice when Mick returned to the office.
Mick was a little surprised to see Nancy so focused.
He walked up and looked at the interface of Nancy’s phone, which was a clearance game.
Mick was no stranger to games, as he was in charge of the game company under Reed Group.
The game Nancy was playing was a casual game developed by the group’s game company a few years ago, which Mick had played before.
It was precisely because he had played it before and had enough understanding of the game that Mick was stunned when he saw the game clearance points on the phone interface.
There are definitely not many people who can reach this score.
The further you go, the more the game tests the player’s hand speed and logical thinking ability.
And Nancy was obviously good at both.
After finishing another round, Nancy finally stopped and stretched her long body with a yawn.
But in the middle of her stretch, her body suddenly stiffened, and the corner of her eye caught a glimpse of Mick standing next to her.
When did he stand here?
“You play the game well,” Mick said with a slight smile.
“When did you come back?” Nancy asked nervously.
“About fifteen minutes ago,” he replied.
Her expression changed, “Then why didn’t you call me?”
“I don’t want to interrupt you since you’re so focused on the game,” he said.
“…,” she didn’t know what to say.
“Also, are you planning on maintaining that posture while talking to me?” Mick asked again.
Nancy suddenly realized that she had been stretching while talking to him.
She felt embarrassed and quickly put her hands down.
“The meeting today lasted longer than I expected. Are you hungry? There’s still some time before dinner. I can have my secretary bring you some snacks,” Mick said.
“No, thank you. I just had a cup of coffee and I’m not hungry,” Nancy replied.
“Well, I have some documents to work on. Will you continue?” he said, walking back to his desk.
Continue? Nancy wondered if he meant for her to continue playing the game.
Holding her phone, Nancy lost interest in the game and found herself glancing at Mick sitting at his desk.
It was the first time she had seen him in his office attire, a suit and tie with his hair combed back, revealing his full forehead.
He looked more mature and serious.
This was the man she had spent the night with?
Although they didn’t actually “sleep together” that night, in a way, they did.
According to Mick’s later explanation, it was because she insisted on sleeping with him that they ended up sharing a bed that night.
It was just sleeping, nothing more!
However, even so, it shocked her immensely.
Unfortunately, her memory was fragmented, and she couldn’t remember what it was like lying in bed with Mick.
“If you want to watch me, you can do it openly, no need to sneak around like this.” Mick’s voice suddenly rang out in the office.
Nancy was stunned, and her face turned red. Was she caught peeking?
“…I just…”
“Just what?” He looked at her calmly, his expression making her feel like he was teasing a pet.
Um, but describing it like that seems like she’s describing herself as a pet. Nancy muttered to herself in her heart, facing Mick’s gaze, she boldly said, “Okay, if you say so!”
After speaking, she really looked straight at him, looking openly.
Mick smiled, “Do you like watching that much?”
“Well, because you’re good-looking.” Nancy said, on the one hand, this was the truth, on the other hand, since her current persona in front of Mick was “liking Mick,” she should try to show her liking.
When someone likes another person, they should act like this, right?
“Is that so? Then watch more.” Mick said, lowering his head to continue reviewing the documents in his hand, but the slight curve of his lips showed that he was in a good mood.
The word “good-looking,” from childhood to adulthood, had been said to him by countless people in his presence. Hearing it so much had made him numb to it.
