I didn’t.

“Serves you right.”

Blake continued, completely ignoring my remark.

“She posed as a helpless girl, sobbing on the side of the street, like she was lost. She begged me to help her when I approache, just to walk her to the other block, because someone had been following her. She looked so… harmless. I agreed.”

“Yeah, because you’re such a do-gooder.”

“We had taken barely a few steps, when she injected me with something. I woke up in The Order base, poisoned and chained to the wall.”

“Kinky,” Zane muttered.

I glanced at him, scrunching up my nose.

He smirked.

“Then I managed to break free, and almost attacked her, when her senior showed up with a gun. He told me… that he could get me you. And made that plan for me to kidnap you.”

I stared at him, but before I even knew how to feel, Zane was grabbing his collar and slamming him against the wall.

“Do not speak about that if you’d like to live, Blake,” he growled. “I don’t even know why I’ve left you alive.”

“Because I’m not a threat anymore,” Blake replied. “She’s yours.”

“She always was!” Zane growled. “Way before you even showed up here with your sorry face.”

“I don’t deny it. Please, calm down. I’m just telling you what happened, man.”

“Continue, Blake,” I said.

Zane stepped away from him, face hard.

I took his hand, gently rubbing it.

He visibly relaxed, at once.

“The plan was just to take you away, so Zane would be distracted and they’d attack. But I ended up doing… and then the bond broke. That night, she visited me at my house, after Zane took you. She mocked me, and I grabbed her throat, only for those tingles to shoot up my arm. I let go immediately, but when I saw her the next time, it was clear. She was my mate.”

“Okay. Cute story. What now?”

He met my eyes. “After what I did to you, Lia, the last thing I deserve is another mate. But I got one.”

“So?”

“So please don’t kill her. Just her, Let her live.”

I cracked a smile. “Why are you so sure we’re gonna win?”

“Because you’re on this side.” He shrugged. “You’re the Goddess’s daughter.”

It felt oddly good to hear that.

I glanced at Zane, who was still glaring at Blake.

“You want us to let one of their best soldiers live?” he asked.

“Yes. Because I’ll take her away. In the middle of the battle, before she can do any damage.”

I cocked up a brow. “Why would we trust you?”

“Because I’m terrified of you, Lia,” he whispered.

I blinked, waiting for him to elaborate.

“I have hurt you enough times. Doing it again would surely get me killed. You’re not just a powerless human anymore. I have seen what you can do. I have heard the stories. You can bend people’s will.”

My eyebrows pulled together. “Bend people’s will?”

“Yes. You can command armies.”

I glanced at Zane, who refused to look at me.

“Zane, is that true?”

He sighed softly. “Yes, Lia. I think you can do that.”

“That… must be some kind of myth. I don’t think I have any power over anyone.”

“You do,” Zane argued, finally turning to me. “That night when we were training. When you told me to let go. I didn’t do it by choice. My hands dropped like they had a mind of their own.”

My mouth fell open. “You’re kidding.”

“I wish I was. That was why the Hounds got weird after.”

Oh. My. God.

My head spun.

-LIA’S POV-

“I… I’m sorry, Zane,” I said, taking his hands in mine. “That must have been so…”

“Scary?” He chuckled.

“Yeah,” I said softly. “And humiliating.”

He shook his head. “It wasn’t. I was very happy with your new power, but also worried because it seemed like you didn’t have control over it. If you can use it correctly, we can end this war before it even starts. But if not, you don’t even know what you might cause.”

A rush of power coursed through me.

This was the means to fix everything.

“I want to learn,” I said. “Is there any way?”

“We have figured out a few things to practice it.”

“Okay. Let’s start immediately.”

“Sure,” Zane replied.

“Wait,” Blake said softly. “Caitlyn.” shot him a look

“I can’t believe you want us to let her live. After everything you dist to ow you to in love with a girl who wants to kill me be

“Eiche’t it our purs” he said “t disn’t choose it. E trust to resist my fexhings to do it”

I folded my arms “what changes? Why are you here

He hesitated, then looked at both of us “She’s still my mato I can’t stop worrying about her or dismiss what I lost. You know that I got a second chance at happiness after everything with you. Flow can th

We were quiet for a boat.

He went on, slower now. “I know I have no right to ask you log anything. Not alter everything I did. But I’m begging you… when the fighting starts if you come across her, don’t kill her. Give me a chance to reach her first. Let me get her out.”

Zane gave me a side glance, like he was checking to see it was going to explode.

I sighed, staring at Blake.

He was tired. Not the fake, dramatic tired he’d used before when trying to guilt trip me. But the kind that showed on his body. This eyes were sunken, skin paler than usual. He looked like he hadn’t slept in days. Or eaten. Or done anything except worry about this girl.

“You’re serious about her,” I said.

He nodded. “I don’t expect forgiveness. I don’t expect trust. But if I can do one thing right… I want it to be this.”

Zane leaned back against the wall, arms still crossed. “You’re asking a lot. How do we know she’s not setting you up again?”

“She doesn’t know I’m doing this. In fact, she would kill me first if she found out. She hates me.”

“Well deserved,” I muttered.

“What do we get in return?” Zane asked. “I’m still not convinced to do anything at all for you. The Hounds will fight me if they found out I even let you in.”

Blake straightened up slightly. “That’s fair. But I do have something to offer you.”

“What?”
