Rosalind was speechless for a moment.
Just then, the door of a bedroom in the room opened, and it was Archer and Rosalind’s son Lionel who came out. When he saw Mason in the living room, Lionel immediately widened his eyes in surprise.
“Mason, why are you here?” Lionel asked anxiously.
Mason said coldly, “I’m not your brother. I’m just here to tell your parents that Veronica will cut ties with the Barlow family from now on. So, it’s best for you, the Barlow family, to stay away from Veronica. As for any debts the Barlow family has, don’t involve her.”
Lionel’s mind couldn’t keep up for a moment.
Archer hurriedly retorted, “Our relationship is not something that can be easily broken. After all,
Veronica is my daughter. If you are with Veronica, then I am your father-in-law. Do you really want to take my daughter away from me? People will laugh at us if you say that!”
“Laugh at us?” Mason’s eyes flickered. “I’d like to see who would dare to laugh.”
Archer’s face turned red. Of course, no one in Emerald City would dare to openly mock Mason of the
Reed family.
“Also, I came here today just to warn you, not to negotiate with you. If you don’t listen to the warning, then you’ll bear the consequences.” After Mason finished speaking, he turned around and was about to leave.
Archer quickly stood up and tried to stop him.
But before he could grab Mason’s clothes, Mason kicked him and then stepped on his chest.
“Ugh…” Archer’s face turned from red to purple, feeling extremely uncomfortable. He desperately tried to move Mason’s foot away, but it was as heavy as a thousand pounds and he couldn’t budge it.
Rosalind and He Wanye were completely dumbfounded by this scene.
Rosalind was the first to react, trembling as she said, “Mason, please…please release your foot. How could you step on your elder like this? After all, we are the ones who raised you!”
“Raised me?” Mason sneered. “When did you raise me? At first, Secretary Wylie gave me money, and later, the Reed family gave me money. You just did what you were paid to do. And what’s the result?
You seem to have forgotten your place.”
Rosalind was embarrassed and her face turned pale.
“You’d better recognize your own identity. Don’t forget where you stand. The Reed family only has a relationship with you because of Veronica. If Veronica wasn’t in the Barlow family, you would be nothing.” After Mason finished speaking, he lifted his foot and left.
Archer coughed repeatedly, and Rosalind and Lionel helped him
1.
The three members of the Reed family looked at each other with ugly expressions on their faces.
After leaving the Barlow family, Mason went directly to Veronica’s school to pick her up.
“How come you’re here? Didn’t the doctor tell you to rest more?” Veronica asked.
Mason was like a shining object, and most of the people passing by would gaze at him, even if he had a plain expression and dressed modestly, he would still attract attention.
“I came to pick you up. Didn’t you say you only had classes in the morning today?” Mason said. “Are all your morning classes over now?”
“They’re over, but she had some other things to do today,” she replied.
At this point, Veronica bit her lip lightly.
Beside Veronica, Shirley glanced at her friend and then at
Mason.
Shirley had taken some time off and returned to school to attend classes, only to find out what her friend had been through during that time.
She had almost been buried in a pile of rubble! And what shocked Shirley even more was that Mason had risked his life to rush in and save Veronica.
As Veronica recounted the events, Shirley felt like she was watching a romantic movie.
It was simply thrilling!
And when she learned that her friend and Mason had finally reconciled because of this incident, she breathed a long sigh of relief.
Things had finally turned out well.
“Mason, you and Veronica are boyfriend and girlfriend now, right?” Shirley asked bluntly.
“Yes,” Mason answered just as bluntly.
“You won’t break up with Veronica so casily in the future, will you? Do you know how much it hurts her when you break up with her so casually? And do you know how hurtful some of the things people say about her at school are?” Shirley spoke up for her friend.
But today, Mason had come to the school to pick up Veronica himself, so the rumors and gossip about her at school should have died down a bit.
“We won’t break up again,” Mason said with a confident tone.
Shirley hadn’t expected Mason to answer so confidently, so she asked unconsciously, “So does that mean you two will get married?”
“Yes.” Another affirmative answer.
Shirley looked at her friend with envy. Was this the result of a successful love affair? “When you get married, you must invite me to the wedding!”
“Don’t worry, we will.” Mason said.
Veronica blushed and followed Mason into the car. She couldn’t help but say, “You and Shirley were a bit too suggestive…”
“Do you think we won’t get married?” Mason asked.
Veronica hesitated. Of course, she didn’t think that way. After experiencing so much together, she was convinced that they would spend their future together. But… “The way you and Shirley talked just now, it seemed like we would get married soon, which is a bit exaggerated.”
“We will get married after we graduate, but it’s only a year away.” Mason said.
“Ahem!” Veronica almost choked on her own saliva. “Are you serious?”
“Do you think I’m lying?” Mason asked.
“But don’t you think it’s too early? When we graduate, we’re still young, and you’re two years younger than me… Men in the city rarely get married so early.”
“Since we’ve decided to spend our lives together, what does it matter if it’s early or late? We’ll get married anyway.” Mason said, looking straight at her.
“What about you? Do you want to?”
Somehow, at that moment, Veronica felt her heart beating faster, as if this question was not just about whether she wanted to get married or not.
His gaze seemed to be asking her if the promise she had made to him still held true. Did she regret it?
Was there any reluctance?
“I’m willing.” This was Veronica’s answer to him.
Of course, how could she not be willing? When this man rushed into the explosion site and risked his life to save her, and when at the final moment of danger, he would rather die on the scene himself than let her stay, she already understood what kind of existence he was to her.
He was a more precious existence than her own life.
“Then we’ll get married as soon as we graduate, is that okay?” Mason said.
‘…” Veronica hesitated for a moment, “What about my and stepmother…”
father
“I’ve taken care of it. They shouldn’t come looking for trouble again,” Mason said, “If you want to sever ties, I think they should understand that.”
Veronica looked at Mason suspiciously. She knew her father and stepmother’s personalities well.
People like them, if they found out that she and Mason were back together and talking about marriage, how could they easily give up?
“Did you bribe them? How much did they ask for?” she asked
“I know you don’t like this. How could I do something that would make you unhappy?” Mason said.
Although it was easy to bribe greedy people, he didn’t want to do something that would upset her.
“Then did you…take matters into your own hands?” Veronica continued to guess.
Mason looked a little guilty now. “It wasn’t exactly taking matters into my own hands, but I did give your father a little kick.”
Veronica blinked. Was he uncomfortable? She rarely saw this expression on his face.
“Is that all?” she asked.
“And I said a few…threatening words,” Mason replied, his expression becoming awkward.
“Oh,” Veronica responded flatly.
Her indifferent reaction surprised Mason a bit. “Aren’t you angry?” he asked.
“Why should I be angry? Because you stepped on my father? Well, I don’t even want to call that kind of person my father. If I had gone with you, maybe we could have caught up to him and given him a beating!”
When her father sent those thugs to ask her for money, the last bit of affection she had for him disappeared!
Her father should have known what kind of people those thugs were. If she had really fallen into their hands, who knows what would have happened to her, or even her whole life could have been ruined.
But her father probably just wanted to use those thugs to make himself a tool to ask for money from the
Reed family.
Hearing Veronica’s words, Mason’s expression returned to normal.
“Let’s find a place to have lunch first, and then decide whether to go back to the Reed House or…”
“I have somewhere I want to go this afternoon,” Veronica interrupted Mason and pursed her lips. “I want to go to the detention center and see Daniel.”
Upon hearing this, Mason’s eyebrows furrowed. “You want to see Daniel?”
“Yes, the trial is coming up soon, and I want to see him again before it starts,” Veronica said.
“What’s there to see in him?” Mason’s eyes showed obvious displeasure. “Or is it that you still can’t let go of him? Do you feel guilty for what happened to him? Or do you have some other kind of guilt towards him?”
He didn’t like any of those possibilities!
Suddenly, Veronica looked at Mason’s expression and asked, “Are you… jealous?”
A sudden sentence caught Mason off guard, causing him to pause. He then awkwardly covered his lips and avoided eye contact, seemingly unsure how to face her gaze.
