They arrived and checked in, and he unpacked all his things and ordered food for everyone, many pizzas to be delivered for dinner. They’d go and do the grocery shopping in the morning. He was going to cop a beating from everyone in this room when he told them, and he wondered if he should put it off for a few days to let them all enjoy the week before incurring his mother and likely his father’s wrath along with full annoyance or anger from his two sisters, or should he just bite the bullet and do it now?
He found all eyes on him as his mother announced he wasn’t likely going to make Christmas dinner and was saved from telling them why, but his phone ringing
“It’s Wil.”
He stated and got up and walked away from them all, to take that call outside on the veranda.
“Yes Wil.”
He asked shrugging his jacket on as he answered it.
“Sorry to interrupt your vacation, but I’ve got court on Monday morning, and I can’t seem to find my copy of the Coltrain Accounts. Where is your copy? Do you know by any chance?”
“Don’t worry about the interruption, and you likely just saved me for the moment. As for the Coltrain file, it’s likely in my home office. Finally, it’s going to court?”
“Yes, or finally getting the preliminary hearing. But I don’t want to miss anything in the prep work. Now when you say your home office? Is that the apartment or out at Cliffside?”
Calvin frowned. He’d not been to Cliffside in a long time, but didn’t recall bringing the Coltrain documents to the apartment either.
“I don’t know, to be honest,”
he stated. His Cliffside office had full security features and a walk??n safe??tyle storage, where he kept all the important documents. That’s why only himself and Wil were in the know about it and had access to it. Why it had a motion sensor activated cameras in all corners of the room and sent an alert to his phone if anyone went in there.
“I’ll head to your apartment first, if it’s not there. Do you mind my going out to Cliffside?”
“Not at all,”
Calvin stated.
“You’ve got a key anyway and access. Thanks for letting me know your intent.”
“I wouldn’t want to freak you out by you getting an unexpected alert over it,”
Wil stated.
“I’m hoping the prelim will finally set a full court date for the case. That there will be no more delays.”
“That would be nice,”
Calvin nodded. It had taken well over a year to get them into court the last time and then they’d asked for a new date because their lawyer had been fired, and a new council had to be arranged, and they needed time to get acquainted with the case. Then it was delayed yet again a second time with that new lawyer’s law firm apparently going under, and so they once again had to retain a new lawyer. It was all stalling tactics as far as Wil was concerned.
Calvin also believed this,
“You’ll push hard this time, no more stalling tactics from that company.”
“Yes, I’ve done the due diligence, both those so??alled lawyers, that he lost. I have since found out still work for the Coltrain’s, just in a different part of the company, off in a subsidiary branch out of state, so if the judge sees fit to grant an extension this time, I’ll provide all of that to the judge and refuse to accept an extension without an actual valid reason seeing as the previous two lawyers are on the Coltrain payroll still. I got the documents to prove it. Phillipe tracked those two lawyers to subsidiary branches, and it’s all sorted to prove the Coltrain’s are lying.”
“Alright.”
“Have you told them yet?”
Wil asked.
“No, they’re here for a holiday, I might just let it go for a few days.”
Calvin sighed.
“Let them have a nice time before it gets ruined.”
“I’d think it’s best just to rip the Band??id off Calvin. Just keep that broom away from your mother.”
Wil laughed.
“Glad I’m not there.”
“She’s not chased me with a broom since I was 23.”
Calvin laughed himself.
She’d done that, chased both him and Wil when they’d sold everything the two of them owned, to get the start??p funds for C.R. Technology building to be built. She’d worried they’d lose everything and be e small company. bankrupted, also losing both their parents’ money because they’d invested…
But it had all worked out, he’d not done it on a whim. He and Wil had worked damned hard to get his company where it was, even back then, and now today both his and Wil’s parents benefit from that very moment.
He’d left it alone now for four days, just spent that time with his family on the slopes and allowed them to have a good start to the vacation, but was found by his mother leaning on the balcony just off the living room texting the boys. She’d stared right at him and stated
“No, work Calvin, this is a vacation, they are your rules for family vacation.”
“It’s not work,”
he’d stated, and it wasn’t. Then he’d looked at her and saw she had an outstretched hand, smiled at her when she snapped her fingers at him.
“Hand it over and prove it’s not work,”
she stated, clearly didn’t trust him.
“Every night you come out here and text while dinner is being prepared.”
He couldn’t even argue with that one. The boys were two hours ahead of them here in Montana, so they’d already had dinner and were settled in for the night, getting ready for bed, but over the past four days, either Marilyn had been taking photos for them and sending them to him, or she’d shown the twins how to do that, and told them they could do so. He’d gotten more photos of them now; many actually.
He knew what their bedrooms looked like and that snow??overed creek too, from the bridge, though they’d already told him it was melting away.
“It’s not work,”
he assured her.
