“I want to feel you too,” I whispered, staring at him.

Zane leaned in, eyes never leaving mine, until our noses brushed.

Heat spread through me. Warm. Comforting. Like home.

Zane let go of my chin, hand travelling to rest on my waist. His fingers traced patterns on the fabric of my t-shirt, making me inch. closer to him. Sparks shot through my body, lighting up my skin from within.

And then, a heat spread again, this time reaching my eyes.

Zane’s black eyes widened, his heart racing loud enough for me to hear.

“What?” I whispered.

“Your eyes,” he said simply.

I glanced into the mirror, a smile taking over my lips. “They’re purple.”

He took my chin again, making me look at him. “They’re beautiful. Extraordinary. Truly divine.”

I grinned, my cheeks flaming.

“Thank you.”

He smiled, leaning in and pressing his lips to mine.

My heart hammered in my chest, knocking against my ribcage like an imprisoned animal.

Zane’s hands went to my back, tracing up and down, slipping into my shirt.

My fingers closed around the material of his shirt, tingles erupting throughout.

The heat I felt in my body amplified, like a force I couldn’t control.

“Ow,” Zane winced, eyes opening.

He glanced at my hand on his shoulder.

I felt something wet against my fingertips.

But I didn’t care.

I wanted him. I wanted more.

I pushed him back, climbing on top of him, crashing my lips against his again.

Zane wrapped an arm around me, kissing me back with matching passion.

He flipped us over, straddling me, trying to press my wrists against the bed.

But I wrapped my arms around him tighter, refusing to be dominated.

My nails dug into his back, trying to pull him ever closer.

I wanted to be in his skin.

I wanted us to be one entity.

“Lia,” he whispered, breaking the kiss.

I didn’t respond, pulling him harder.

Zane resisted, trying to push off of me.

A growl escaped my lips, stubborn and unyielding.

“Lia,” Zane said again, trying to push me away.

I growled louder, the warmth in my eyes hotter now, almost burning.

A hint of fear crossed his face, making me narrow my eyes.

“What?” I asked, my voice shocking me.

I didn’t sound like myself.

I… I sounded like… Selene.

Zane grabbed my wrists and pushed them down against the bed, his eyes black again.

I thrashed against his hold.

“Lia,” he snapped, glaring at me. “You’re hurting me.”

I froze, blinking up at him.

“Look at your hands.”

I turned my head to glance at them, sucking in a breath.

My nails had sharpened to silver claws.

And they were covered in his blood.

I looked at Zane again, my eyes wide.

“Where?” I asked, my voice small.

Zane stared down at me, before slightly twisting his body to show me his back, still maintaining a grip on my wrists.

I let out a choked cry when I saw it.

There were deep claw marks in his shirt, blood slowly seeping through.

“I’m so sorry,” I whispered, my heart beating like crazy.

“It’s okay,” he said, “calm down.”

“No,” I cried, shaking my head. “I hurt you. I-I hurt you.”

“It’s okay, Lia,” he said, his eyes returning to their gentle blue.

“No,” I whispered, squeezing my eyes shut.

Pain spiked through my head like glass shards behind my eyes. I gasped, opening them, and the room blurred.

The lamp on my desk flickered.

“Lia?” Zane’s voice was far away. Muffled. “Lia, look at me.”

I tried. I really did. But everything was spinning.

I couldn’t speak. My skin felt too tight. My head felt like it would explode.

He let go of my wrists, his hand brushing my cheek. “Hey. Breathe. Come on, love. Come back.”

“Make it stop,” I begged, my voice still not mine.

Zane muttered something I couldn’t hear. Then he placed both hands on my face, forcing me to look at him.

“Lia, listen to me. You need to ground yourself.”

I didn’t know how. What was happening? I couldn’t breathe.

“Just focus on me.”

I blinked at him, chest heaving, heart hammering too fast.

“Zane…”

“I’m here,” he whispered.

My body shuddered.

And everything went black.
