“And I’m glad it was me.” I pulled away from him, cupping his face in my hands. “I’m not going anywhere, I promise. No matter what happens, I’m yours. You’ll never have to go through anything without me. Always and forever.”
His eyes softened, and his shoulders dropped as he exhaled.
“I mean it,” I whispered.
He pulled me into his arms, hugging me like he needed it to breathe.
“I love you,” he murmured.
“I love you too,” I said. “And we’re gonna get through this. Together.”
We stayed like that for a while, after which he lifted me up into his arms and carried me back to bed. He placed me down carefully, before climbing in with me, straddling me.
His gaze lowered from my face to my chest, where the scar of the bullet was.
His thumb traced my skin, sending a shiver down my spine.
“I hate this,” he whispered.
“I think it looks cool,” I muttered.
“I don’t mind how it looks,” he said. “It’s just a reminder than I failed to protect you.”
“You weren’t there, Aaron. It’s not your fault. And you still protected me. You found me in time and got me treated. Give yourself more credit, darling.”
He met my eye again, just staring for a long moment.
I smiled up at him. “You can’t control everything, Aaron. You did your best that night. Some things are just meant to happen.”
He slumped on top of me, burying his face in the crook of my neck, sniffing deeply.
I laughed. “Hey, it tickles.”
“Shh. Let it.”
I laughed harder as he spoke, lips brushing against my ear.
Aaron chuckled as well, wrapping his arm tighter around my waist.
“Are you trapping me here?” I asked, gently pushing at his hand.
“Maybe. It’s not like you can’t free yourself.”
“True, but I don’t want to.”
“Good. Then stay still and let me breathe in your scent. Let me feel your presence, and remind myself that y you’re re okay.”
I traced my hand over the back of his neck, playing with the hair at the base of his head.
“I’m right here. I’m not going anywhere,” I reassured him again.
“I wouldn’t let you if you tried.”
I smiled. “Mhm? What would you do if I tried to run away?”
Aaron pulled away to meet my gaze, his eyes black.
I sucked in a breath, surprised.
“I would catch you and drag you to the dungeons, then chain you to me so you can’t even move an inch away.”
My heart gave a flutter in my chest, stomach twisting.
I smiled. “Why the dungeons? Why not the bedroom?”
“So no one hears you if you scream for help.”
“Oh, okay,” I nodded, narrowing my eyes. “You’re evil.”
“Am I?” He raised a brow.
I scrunched my nose. “Nah. Not really.”
Aaron chuckled, burying his face in my neck again, tickling me with his lips.
I laughed, grabbing onto his hair, as warmth spread through me.
-LIA’S POV-
“Alright,” Zane said, standing in the middle of my bedroom like he owned the place. “Let’s try it.”
“Try what exactly?” I asked, flopping back on the bed. “You’re being vague on purpose. Again.”
He grinned. “Your silver hair. The eyes. The scary goddess energy you keep bottling up like it’s a party trick.”
I was
I stared at the ceiling. “I told you, it only happened once. furious. That jerk thought he can climb into my bedroom after what he did.”
“Right. So we need to trigger strong.”
I sat up. “Zane, I’m not about to scream into the void or punch a hole through my wall just so you can watch my eyes glow.”
He walked over, sitting on the edge of the bed beside me. “We’re not going to do that. No damage. No screaming. But I am going to push you a little.”
I narrowed my eyes. “Push me? How?”
He shrugged, casually. “Emotionally. See if something stirs. Good emotions work too, remember?”
I rolled my eyes. “You just want an excuse to flirt with me.”
“Is it working?” he asked sweetly.
I crossed my arms. “Not even a little.”
“Liar,” he said, smirking. “Your heart’s racing already.”
“No, it isn’t.”
He leaned closer, stopping when our faces were mere inches. away. “You forget I can hear it.”
I hated how fast it thumped when he said stuff like that.
“Zane,” I warned, trying not to smile. “Focus.”
He pulled back, just a bit. “Okay. Close your eyes.”
I sighed and did it. “Now what?”
“Breathe,” he said gently. “Slowly. Let go of whatever’s in your head. Feel your power instead. It’s always there, right under your skin. You just don’t listen to it.”
I took a breath, slow and careful, and tried to feel… something. Anything.
But nothing happened.
I glanced at him. “Nothing.”
“Keep trying. Very slowly.”
He took my hand in his, tracing his fingers over the tips of my fingers. “Try to imagine your claws sticking out. Try to imagine them poking the inside of your skin, trying to crawl their way out.”
I stared at my hand in his, doing as he said.
A slightly pain broke out in my hand.
“Ow,” I muttered, frowning.
“Look at me,” he said, taking my chin with his free hand. “Focus on me. I am your mate. Your destined partner for the rest of your life. The one created for you. Our wolves-yours and mine-are linked together.”
His eyes slowly darkened, from the gentle, sky-like blue, to a dark midnight shade.
My heartbeat picked up.
“I want to feel you, Lia,” he said, his voice low and deeper than usual.
