That was… odd. And overboard.

“Please, Lia,” he whispered, and a tear rolled down his cheek.

My eyes widened.

“Blake,” I said, frowning up at him. “What’s wrong?”

He sniffed, closing his eyes and turning his face to the side. “Nothing.”

“Blake,” I said again, then stepped forward and wrapped my arms around him. He hugged me back, dipping his face into the crook of my neck. Those same tingles erupted throughout my body, making me suck in a breath. “I promise. Just… don’t cry. Please. I care about you a lot, Blake. Don’t cry because of me.”

He sniffed softly, and nodded. “Okay. Thank you. I’m sorry for being like this.”

“It’s alright,” I said softly, lightly tapping his back. “I… understand. You’re sensitive.”

“I am, when it comes to you. I’m not close to a lot of people, Lia.”

“I get it,” I nodded, pulling away from him to meet hist here for you. And with you.”

“You’re the best,” he smiled, gently pulling my check. gaze. “I’m

I smiled back at him, even as my heart twisted with unease.

-LIA’S POV-

I didn’t know what to feel anymore. On one hand, Blake was amazing. He was everything I could have ever asked for. He was good looking, protective, charming and loving. He put in actual efforts, he celebrated my birthday and he was the first boy in my life to ever make me feel special.

On the other hand, he had started to seem… controlling. Short tempered. Possessive.

He hadn’t really stopped me from anything else, but the way he told me to stay away from Zane, the way he reacted whenever he saw us together was slightly frightening.

I could see that he liked me. So I somewhat understood his reactions. But I didn’t understand why he liked me. He had barely known me for a week. It didn’t make sense for someone to catch such strong feelings is such a short period of time. I mean, if anyone, it should’ve been me going batshit crazy about him. I was the “normal” one here. I was the nerd, the socially awkward kid with no friends. Why didn’t he have any? What was wrong with him?

The rest of the day after he’d warned me to keep a distance from Zane was uneventful. I’d felt Zane staring holes into my back, but I’d ignored him completely.

Blake’s words had made sense. Zane was one who had never spared me a second glance, not even when his friends were practically torturing me. So why did he suddenly want to spend time with me? Why was he suddenly trapping me against walls and bookshelves and whatever else he found? Why was he sniffing me and acting like he wanted me?

It was a trap. It was most definitely a trap. An elaborate plan designed probably by Ajax Hale. This time, they were using Zane, because he was the one who had the greatest chance of earning my trust. He was the only one who’d never directly hurt. me, so of course it had to be him. I thought locking me inside my own locker was my punishment for punching Ajax. But no, it was this. They were planning to play with my heart and break me completely. That was exactly why Zane got me out of the locker. That was the first move..

But I wasn’t going to let them win. Not this time. Not with Blake having my back.

I was woken up by my phone buzzing. I frowned, squinting my eyes and glancing at the caller’s name.

EVIL HOUND 1

I cut the call, closing my eyes to go back to sleep.

But he started calling again.

Sighing with exasperation, I switched my phone off. It was a school night. I did not have time for Zane Adams right now.

But Zane wasn’t one to give up.

Less than a minute later, some idiot began honking on our street. Repeatedly. And constantly. I groaned and pulled at pillow over my head, cursing under my breath, until I realised who it might be. Now my eyes widened, the drowsiness vanishing completely. I shot out of bed and approached the window, moving the curtains to look outside.

It was him. Zane was down there, staring up at me. I covered my mouth, before gesturing at him to go away.

He stared up at me and then honked the car again.

I flinched, covering my ears.

“Shhh!” I placed a finger on my lips, scowling. Then I showed him my index finger to ask him to wait and quickly grabbed my phone, switching it on.

I called his number and he answered on the first call.

“What do you want?” I whisper-yelled.

“Come down,” he replied calmly.

“What? No. I’m not coming down.”

“Alright, then open the window. I’ll come up.”

“No way!” I squeaked. “Stay there.”

“Then come down.”

“Why?” I cried.

“Because I told you to.”

I let out a deep sigh. “I hate you, Zane Adams,” I muttered.

“Come hate on me down here. I can’t feel it when you’re up there.”

“Okay, fine. Give me five minutes.”

“You have two or I start honking again.”

“No, don’t do that! I’m coming.”

I tossed my phone to the bed, quickly grabbed a shawl and rushed out of my bedroom, descending the stairs on the tips of my toes. Very quietly, I opened the main door and stepped out, gently closing it behind me. Then I hurried to his car, breathing hard.

“Hey there, Little Lia.” Zane smirked, rolling down his window.

“Get in.”

I narrowed my eyes. “What? You really think I’m going anywhere with you? At this time of the night? Without telling my parents?”

“You can tell them, I don’t mind.”

“I’m going back inside,” I stated, turning around. Before I could take more than three steps, he was out of his car and grabbing my arm, pulling me back. My back collided with his chest, pulling a gasp from my lips.

“Do you always have to be difficult?” he whispered, leaning in to my ear.

Sparks erupted in my skin, goosebumps covering my entire body. I felt the urge to lean into his touch. But didn’t understand. it. Why? Why did he make me feel this way? Why did Blake?

“Zane, let me go,” I said softly.

He turned me around, now pulling me even closer by the waist. I stared up at him, into his dark blue eyes.

“Why do you keep asking me that when you know I never listen?”

I shrugged. “Because I’m stupid.”

His gaze dropped to my lips, then returned to my eyes. “We both His gaze dropped to my know that’s not true.”

I smiled. “And a loser. Isn’t that what you guys call me? Loser

Lia. Stupid Lia. Dumb girl. Ugly Little Lia.”

His face fell slightly. “I’ve never called you those.”

“I think you have.”

“Okay, then you call me all of it too.”

“Not the same thing.”

“Why not?”

“I’ve been called these by you and your friends in front of everyone. I’ve been ridiculed and treated like an outcast at my own school.”

“So do the same to me,” he insisted.

I laughed humourlessly. “As if you’d even be seen with me in front of anyone. There’s a reason you only come annoy me when I’m all alone, in dark corners and the library. Or when I’m at home, away from the eyes of your Hounds. Otherwise, Zane Adams wouldn’t be caught dead with me.

I pushed off his arms and stepped away from him, glaring at him.

“I’m going back inside, Zane. Go home. Or keep standing here. and honking your expensive car. My parents will speak to you themselves.”

I turned around to leave, certain he would give up now. He would get into his flashy car and drive away, and never reach out to me again.

But I couldn’t be more wrong.
