He shook his head, “I can’t.”

“You are the only one I trust, it will be the first and last thing I will ask of you. If you are my friend, you will do it,”

I remarked, my voice and eyes dead. As soon as I had exited the prison I had mind-linked him about what I wanted him to do.

The clearing fell into a dead silence as everyone’s eyes came back and forth between Bix and me. Bix’s eyes got wet and red slightly. He did not move from where he stood for a long time, hoping I would change my mind but he could no longer refuse me. He slowly stepped closer to me, his eyes full of guilt.

“Stop me,”

he begged.

“Do it,”

I smiled.

Witnessing this exchange between Bix and I, dad’s heart nearly failed as he sensed something extremely dangerous going to happen. “WAIT A MINUTE! WHAT THE HELL YOU ARE DOING?!”

he growled, demanding an explanation.

“DO IT!”

I yelled at Bix. He focused back on me then called upon his magic.

“WHAT THE FUCK YOU ARE DOING?! STOP! STOP I SAY!”

Dad yelled, racing over to me to interrupt. I glazed at the warriors who immediately pinned their former Alpha to the ground.

Ella and Oran’s panicking faces moved back and forth from Bix’s shining eyes to my wolf’s eyes.

“What is going on? Why is Bix aiming at Reuben’s heart…”

Ella stammered.

“This will hurt like bitch,”

Bix remarked, his eyes filled with tears. “I am sorry!!”

with that Bix aimed his magic at my heart, it felt like someone had stabbed me with a sword.

“NO… STOP!!”

Dad screamed along with Ella, Oran froze in place when they all recognized what kind of ceremony Bix was performing for me.

I slowly dug my half shifted hand into the middle of my chest, as I declared.”

I, Reuben Emerald..”

“STOP, REUBEN!! DON’T DO IT!!”

he shouted like crazy.

None of his screaming or crying was going to stop me as I continued, “I, Reuben Emerald, destroy my fertility from this point forward. In this lifetime, I have had only one woman who is pregnant with my child, she will be the only woman to ever carry or give birth to my child. In this lifetime she is the only one that I will be with, there is no other woman for me. If there comes a time that I sleep with another woman that is not her… that will be the end of me.”

I choose my own death in this life.

The clearing fell into dead silence as dad stopped struggling in horror. The wolves holding him down moved away in shock.

“What the hell did you…”

Dad broke into tears, sitting there miserably on the ground. “You ruined your own life…”

Vomiting blood, I turned around and left for what remained of Willow’s house. “I banish Alpha Louis from my life,”

I declared, without bothering to look back at him.

Dad kept sitting in the clearing devastated for hours. He had lost the war even though he had won the battle. That night he disappeared from the pack and from my life.

Upon reaching the debris of the house, I dug deeper and deeper into the rubble. My nails bled as night came. After reaching the ground below the debris, I slept in the nest I had made, seeing Willow beside me like always…

In reality I was alone. She was never there…

I let my body relax as the river water pulled me down into its depths.

I never thought that my love had given her so much pain. Even now…

I clutched at the torn handkerchief in my hand. I had to disappear but still I could not let her go, “Willow…”

Willow

Clutching my chest, I cried harder and fell to my knees upon hearing Ella’s words. Every bit of Reuben’s suffering, every ounce of pain he endured for me, wounded my soul. His always-smiling face, his love-filled eyes had concealed such cruel and painful memories concerning me. He never let me know about them, not even a hint.

I covered my mouth with my hand, sobbing. He destroyed his own life for my love. I… had truly destroyed him…

And now… I’ve broken him again by forgetting him.

As soon as that thought crossed my mind, the last remark he had made before he left my room after I had threatened my life resurfaced in my mind. His every word echoed in my ears as my heart dropped into my stomach.

“Reuben…”

I whispered his name under my breath, panic rising within me. I scrambled up from the floor, my heart pounding, and hurried past Ella. I breezed by Walter, Oran, and Bix without meeting their gazes while I blindfolded myself with the long sleeves that I had torn off my hospital gown as I moved.

“Reuben,”

my voice echoed down the hospital corridor as I sprinted, relying on my wolf instincts to guide me. I followed Reuben’s scent, dashing out of the hospital in pursuit.

Some voices, which I recognized as those of my pack members, reached my ears as I ran. Their surprise at my blindfolded state was unmistakable, but I paid them no mind. My thoughts were consumed by Reuben alone.

Why was his scent so faint in the air? Why couldn’t I connect with him through our mind-link? The thing that terrified me most of all was why couldn’t I sense him at all? My heart raced as a lump formed in my throat. What was this feeling of dread in my chest? The fear of losing him held me tightly in its grasp.

I increased my speed, following the faint trail of his scent, determined to find him wherever he may have gone. Countless negative thoughts flooded my mind, the fear of losing Reuben overwhelmed me to the point that tears welled up in my eyes, dampening the blindfold shielding them.

However, my feet came to a sudden halt when I realized his scent had vanished. How was that possible? Where was I and why couldn’t I smell him from where I stood? The silence around me heightened my awareness that I was in an unfamiliar place, where no one usually ventured. I had no clue about my current location until I lifted my foot to take a step forward, relying on my wolf hearing to assess my surroundings. Then, I felt the coldness beneath my feet, and it dawned on me where I was. The sound of gurgling water reached my ears, confirming that I was standing on the riverbank. It was the pack’s river.

I gasped and froze. What could this possibly mean? His scent ended here at the river… had he… had he…

“Reuben!”

I panicked, lifting my feet I hastily splashed into the river.

“REUBEN!”
