“Hmm, I’d say that’s typical of children their age. They’re young enough to still believe everyone is good at heart, they’re not jaded by society yet. They’re also old enough to want things like a dad. Especially if they’d never known who he was before and now do. It kind of can’t be helped, and I believe that’s why you hired me.”

“It is.”

Marilyn nodded. om where she left

The meeting ended, and she made her way to her writing studio and sat down to pick off this morning, had sat that phone on a shelf on the other side of the room. She didn’t need to look at it all the time like the boys did.

Wil

He looked at the text message that was waiting for him. It stated it was from an unknown number, and although he would normally dismiss unknown calls and texts to avoid scammers and telemarketers. He could see the notification showed it was not only addressed to him personally but had Marilyn’s name as well. ‘Wil, it’s Marilyn could’ was all the notification read.

He was glad for the time zone difference between California; where he was away on business with Calvin, and the state of Virginia. Because although she had sent this message likely mind morning to her, it had arrived for him first thing in the morning, while he was in his hotel room and not in a car or walking about with Calvin himself.

He was curious as he clicked the message open just what had prompted Marilyn to contact him directly? From what he could tell, it was also off her personal phone, not the one he’d given to her to track Calvin. He wondered if Marilyn thought that when Calvin got the bill for that phone he would go through it, and look to see if she was making calls or sending texts from it?-

Or was it just that she had something specific to ask Wil directly, that she didn’t want not only Calvin to know about, but the twins as well. It was entirely possible that the twins had that new phone all the time, she’d made mention of them being allowed to check it. If they were curious about Calvin himself, so it was possible they had the phone all the time.

Maybe, he thought, she’d gotten some of her memories back; that would be nice for her, he thought. Although it had only been a week since their meeting, maybe Calvin’s plan had worked and him dressing and smelling like the last time she’d seen him, had triggered something within Marilyn. Something she now wanted to discuss with him, but not Calvin.

He could only hope that her actively reaching out to him without going through her lawyer was a good thing, that maybe she recalled him and that they had been friends. He hoped so, that would go a long way to helping her recover and maybe seeing Calvin and Marilyn come back together.

‘Wil, it’s Marilyn. Could you please give me your wife Anabell’s contact details? You said Marrin and Anabell were friends. I have something to ask, and want an honest, unbiased answer to. Thank you, Marilyn.’

He smiled at that, maybe she recalled Anabell, but then he also sighed a little on the heavy side at the words ‘honest, unbiased answer’. Those three words told him she still didn’t trust him at all. Even though she was reaching out to him, it wasn’t actually him that she wanted to talk to, but his wife.

He called Anabell, and she picked up

“Hey you,”

he could hear the smile in her voice.

“Morning honey, I have a text from Marilyn Riddley. She wants to talk to you and is requesting I give her your contact details. Are you alright with me doing that?”

he asked.

“Oh, yeah sure… Why me though?”

she asked as an afterthought.

“From the message I got, she wants an honest, unbiased opinion on something. Doe: completely,”

he muttered. et trust me

“Come on Wil, you’re Calvin’s friend before hers, and his lawyer as well. Anything she says to you could get back to Calvin is all. Try and see it from her point of view.”

She stated simply.

“I can do that. I was just hoping she’d started to trust me with all my dealings with her without telling Calvin of things is all.”

He sighed softly, and he had been hoping for that. He’d helped tailor that contract to keep Calvin away from her, and allowed a few loopholes to be slipped into it so she didn’t have to tell Calvin about her actual movements, only himself.

“It’ll take time, Wil, she has no memories and all she knows of Calvin and what you showed her, will conflict with each other is all. Give her my phone number and email address, tell her I’m happy to text or take a phone call, and email is good if it’s longer and easier to type on a computer than her phone. Tell her I’m on her side”

She chuckled.

“None of that now.”

Wil shook his head.

“Calvin has settled down, and we don’t want to set him off once more now, do we?”

“How is he doing with all this?”

Anabell asked.

“Alright, as far as I can tell. He’s taken to reading books, fiction books at that in his non??orking hours.”

Wil smiled. Calvin might be hiding them, but it had not escaped Wil’s attention that they were Marilyn Riddley’s books. He’d seen it last night when Calvin had finished one and was on the apps reading list.

Wil himself had recalled the covers and some of the titles there to be Marilyn’s. They were something he saw on Anabell’s reading app. She had her dedicated favourites and reread them at times.

“Huh? I’ve never seen Calvin read for pleasure,”

Anabell stated, and he could hear the frown in her voice.

“He does now. I’ve seen him chuckle and shake his head in response to what he’s reading, smile and roll his eyes even. I think he found something that interests him… He’s reading Marilyn’s books, currently still on those first few when she was Marrin, before she officially became Marilyn,”

he told her.

“Ah I see… but is that healthy?”

she asked.

“Yes, I’d say so, and it’s keeping him fully preoccupied as well, so a good thing,”

Wil stated simply

“He’s taking an interest in what she’s writing, seems to like it. I’d say it’s a way for him to feel connected to her without the need to see her kicking in. They’ll have something to talk about when that restraining order is over. Other than the children.”

“I guess that’s true. Now enough about Calvin, what do you want for dinner when you get home?”

she asked, and once again he could hear the smile in her voice.

“Hmm…”
