“Alright, that’s fair. But what about earlier? When I hadn’t made any mistakes.””

“You didn’t make mistakes, Blake. You meant to do everything that you did. That’s why you’re doing it all over again,” I said, glaring daggers at him.

Blake sighed, lookin to the side. “You left me no option, Lia. Do you know that Zane was going to mark you tonight?”

My eyes widened, heart skipping a beat. “He was?”

“Yes,” he replied, glancing at me. “How could I let that happen?”

I let out a chuckle. “So you brought me here to do it first?”

“Yes. What else was I supposed to do? I beat him to his own plan.”

“There’s a huge difference, Blake. I wanted him to mark me. And I am disgusted by you. I barely even feel the sparks anymore.”

Blake’s eyebrows furrowed.

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not,” I stated. “I don’t feel anything for you anymore.”

“That’s not true!” he growled, eyes bleeding red again.

I flinched, staring at him with wide eyes.

Blake leaned in closer to me, his skin darkening like he was mid-shift.

“You are my mate, Lia Snow. And you will remain mine forever. Whether you want it or not. The Goddess has decided this. Do you understand?”

I released a shaky breath, as a tear slid down my cheek.

I wiped it off, turning my face away from him.

“Then what are you waiting for?” I whispered, sniffling. “If you don’t care about what I want, then why didn’t you mark me while I was unconscious? At least I wouldn’t have to feel it.”

Blake let out a frustrated growl, and I braced myself, squeezing my eyes shut. He turned away from me and punched the wall, drawing a yelp from my lips. More tears left my eyes as I watched him fume.

“Why Lia? Why are you making me do this?” he cried, meeting my gaze again. He was crying too. “He didn’t even choose you. I abandoned my pack for months, moving here, trying to win you over. I chose you every time. Why can’t you see it? Zane chose his pack over you tonight. He knew what dangers you’re surrounded by. He knew you could get into trouble at any time. But he left you alone to protect his pack.”

“Because that is what an Alpha does,” I replied, my voice cracking. “That is what you were supposed to do for yours.” I sniffed again, wiping my face. “Do you really not see it, Blake? You didn’t choose me. You chose yourself. You didn’t even know me when you came here. You just came looking for your mate. You didn’t stay for me, you stayed for you. I didn’t even want you around. And Zane didn’t leave me alone, Blake. He left me with his strongest warriors. How was he supposed to know that you’d stoop so low? That you’d betray us all over again? That you would do this to your own mate?”

“I am only doing the right thing, Lia! He isn’t right for you.”

“Why not?” I yelled, breaking into an angry sob. “Why not? Because he’s not you?”

“Because he’s gonna die!” he growled, making me flinch.

I stared at him, my eyes wide. “What… what do you mean?”

“The Order is going to kill his entire pack. They want to rid this town of werewolves.” He kneeled on the floor, taking my free hand in his. “Lia, come back with me. To my town. I will keep you safe.”

I stared at him in disbelief. “Are you really that stupid?” I whispered. “Did you join hands with The Order, Blake? The people who tried to kill us multiple times?”

“They promised not to harm you if I simply take you away from Zane. Without you, Zane will lose his mind, and his pack will become an easy target. You and I can simply go back to my town and live our lives in peace. Just you and me. An Alpha and his Luna.” He sniffed.

I pulled my hand from his.

“This entire time, I thought maybe you made a mistake, Blake. Maybe you really did mean your apologies. But tonight, you have proven that you’re just a selfish, evil and idiotic jerk.”

He growled, grabbing my neck, making me gasp.

“I am not an idiot, Lia,” he hollered, his face starting to change. “I have a fool-proof plan. My entire pack is guarding us. I will mark you and take you back home right now.”

He let go of me, and I took in a gulp of air, my throat burning. Darkness filled the corner of my eyes, but I kept them open, fighting to stay awake.

“It’s time,” Blake said, climbing into the bed, straddling my body.

“No,” I whispered, trying to shift away, but the handcuff pulled at my wrist painfully.

“Lie back.”

“No,” I cried, shaking my head. “Zane!” I screamed as loud as I could, hot tears leaving my eyes. My heart pounded in my ears, head spinning with panic. “Zane!”

“It’s Blake!” he yelled, grabbing my chin and turning my face to the side, revealing my neck to him. He leaned in and pressed his lips against it, making me shiver. “My name, is Blake,” he murmured against my skin, making everything within me freeze with terror.

His tongue glided over the spot on my neck, and it started to pulse in preparation.

I squeezed my eyes shut, sobbing uncontrollably, as I braced for the pain.

“Everything is just how it should be,” he whispered.

Then his teeth dug into my neck, pulling a blood-curdling scream from my lips.

The house shook, as waves of pleasure flowed through me, numbing my mind, my heart, and the rest of my body.

I stilled, letting out a soft moan as Blake bit me harder, completing the mark.

A lone tear slid down my cheek, and my body plunged into darkness.

-ZANE’S POV-

A scream shot through the air, making me freeze, as my paws slid against the ground.

That was undeniably her.

My Lia.

My mate.

I was on the right path. That sound came from Blake’s house for certain.

But was I too late?

She sounded like… no. No, that couldn’t happen.

I dashed towards his house, heart thumping in my chest as a million terrible scenarios swam before my eyes.

He couldn’t have marked her. That couldn’t happen. I wasn’t too late. I could still save her.

I reached his house, only to find an army of wolves waiting for me. I had never seen any of them before, which meant they were his pack.

And I didn’t have mine. They were fighting for their lives and their home.

I had to fight his pack alone.

There was no power on earth who could keep her away from me.

Growling, I leapt forward, claws extended, teeth bared. I didn’t have time to waste.

The first wolf lunged at me, but I ducked low and slashed across his underbelly. He howled, stumbling to the side. Another one tackled me from behind, teeth snapping near my neck. I rolled, crushing him beneath my weight before throwing him off with a vicious snarl.

More attacked. Six, maybe seven, all snarling and charging like rabid animals.

I didn’t stop. Couldn’t stop. My mate was in that house. She needed me.

Lia’s scream still echoed in my head, sharper and more painful than the wounds forming across my body. I clawed through the next wolf, blood spraying across the grass. My shoulder throbbed, but I kept moving, lunging at two more as they tried to surround me. One went down with a yelp. The other dug his teeth into my leg, but I twisted and slammed his face into the dirt, cracking the skull.

Blake’s pack fought hard. They were trained. Loyal. Desperate.

But I was something else.

I was an Alpha.

And I was furious.

Fueled by a rage that was sacred. And love for my mate.

My wolf burned with it, refusing to back down.

One of them lunged for my throat.

I met him mid-air, closing my jaws around his neck and slamming him to the ground.

Lia’s face flashed before my eyes. Her hair curled to perfection, her dress clinging to her gorgeous body. Her smile. The glint in her eye as she looked at me.

Another tried to bite my side. I kicked him in the ribs hard enough to crack his bones.
