“But you made all the preparations for me to give birth to the baby in the end, didn’t you?” asked Kyla.

“So? Why are you telling me about this? Since you said you’ve moved on, what’s the purpose of calling me a good father?” he asked.

“I only hope you and Trista can be close in the future,” said Kyla.

Martin Weiss said nothing more. He only said, “Go to bed first. I’ll go wash up.”

“Oh… Okay,” she replied. She opened the thin quilt and lay down on the huge bed after he entered the bathroom.

At least she would be spared some awkwardness now that she was alone in bed.

Kyla tried to close her eyes and fall asleep. When Martin Weiss emerged from the bathroom, he saw Kyla lying on the side of the bed near the crib. Her eyes were closed as she was covered with a thin quilt. She looked like she was already asleep.

He bent over slightly as he approached her. His eyes glimmered at the sight of her quivering lashes.

Moments later, he straightened up, went round to the other side of the bed, lay down, and turned off the lights.

The room was instantly dark. Martin Weiss closed his eyes. He knew that the person beside him was not asleep.

‘Is she pretending to be asleep to avoid embarrassment? Or does she not want to see me anymore?’

Her scent seemed to linger around his nose, making his heart feel heavy as if something was blocking it. His body seemed to stiffen.

She was right beside him, but he became confused. He had no idea what to do with this woman.

‘Do I… still love her?

‘What will I do if I can’t fall for her or I’m able to resist her attraction? Are we doomed to divorce and separate? Or am| going to make a different choice?”

In the darkness, Martin Weiss slowly turned over and fixed his gaze on Kyla’s face.

He could only see the outline of her face in the dim light, but… it made his eyes burn.

It turned out even a faint outline could haunt his mind!

On Wednesday, Valda Theller prepared the items she needed to pay respects to her parents. She carried a big bag downstairs where Brian’s car was already there. When he saw her come out, he opened the car door, took the bag, and put it in the backseat before opening the passenger seat door.

The two got into the car, and Brian drove toward the cemetery where the tombs were located.

“Thank you for coming with me today,” murmured Valda Theller.

“I’d like to meet your parents too,” he said.

Valda Theller said, “They’ll be happy to meet you. Even if we can’t be together in the future, my parents will be happy that I even dated such a great boyfriend.”

He frowned slightly. For some reason, he found the words indescribably harsh. “We can’t be together in the future?

“Do you think we can’t be together in the future?” he asked.

Valda Theller was silent. Although she wanted to take a chance and make Brian fall in love with her, she knew deep down that the possibility of success was too small.

Brian still kept his first love in his heart. Besides, could she get him to move on and fall for her when his feelings for his first love were still so deep?

Even if a woman could do that, it would not be her.

However… she was liking him more and more now, so she could not help but want to keep the dream alive a little longer. At least they were a real couple now. They were in a real relationship and not acting.

Listening to her silence, Brian pressed his thin lips and said, “Valda Theller, is this all there is to your love for me?”

“Huh?” She blinked.

When the traffic light turned red and the car stopped in front of a zebra crossing, Brian turned to look at Valda Theller and said, “The more you love someone, the more you want to be with them all your life.

But you don’t seem determined to be with me all your life, so you don’t love me that much, do you?”

“No, that’s not true. I… I like you very much. I love you very much!” she said quickly. She suddenly blushed when the words left her mouth.

‘Gosh, what did I say?’

“You like me and love me very much, but you don’t believe you’ll be with me in the future?” he said.

She bit heavily on her lip, not knowing how to reply for a moment.

The red light changed to green, and the car continued driving.

The car was silent throughout the journey.

Valda Theller hung her head low. No one knew what she was thinking.

When Brian parked his car at the cemetery parking lot near the entrance, Valda Theller suddenly said, “I… I just think your chances of falling in love with me are slim. It won’t be me even if you do end up falling in love with another woman in the future. So I… I…”

She could not go on. She felt inferior.

After all, she was so different from him in terms of family background and everything else.

Brian quietly peered at the person in front of him. Moments later, he unbuckled his seat belt, leaned over slightly, and raised Valda Theller’s jaw with his slender fingers. “Are you that unsure of yourself?”

“…”

His thin lips said gently, “Then you’d better remember what I’m saying now. You’re the first person I’ve decided to try to love in years. If there’s ever a chance I can fall in love with someone, then I think you’re the most likely person.”

She was stunned, surprised that he would say such a thing. He withdrew his hand and said indifferently, “Alright, let’s get out of the car.” She got out of the car and took her bag from the backseat.

Valda Theller took a while to come to her senses.

However, she could not help looking at him blankly when she walked up to him.

“What’s the matter?” he asked.

She seemed to muster her courage to say, “Am I… really the person you’re most likely to fall in love with?”

“Do you think anyone can be my girlfriend?” he asked.

She shook her head quickly. Her adorable appearance made Brian feel as if he were in a better mood.

He said, “Come on, lead the way. I don’t know the way here.”

She then gathered herself and took Brian to her parents’ tombs.

Brian looked at the photos of a man and woman in their 30s on the tombstone.

He knew she was young when her parents left, and her parents were also young.

Valda Theller crouched down, laid out the food and wine, then lit the candles and incense.

“Mom and Dad, I came to see you again. I’m accompanied by my boyfriend, Brian, who’s a nice person.”

She murmured before holding up the incense and bowed. At the same time, she whispered in her heart, hoping they could bless her relationship and keep Brian safe.

Valda Theller finished offering the incense and stood aside. Brian offered the incense and bowed three times toward the tombstones.

Few people in Emerald City could make him bow like that.

“Hello, Uncle and Aunt. I’ll take care of Valda, so don’t worry,” said Brian. Even if it did not work out between them, he would do his best to protect Valda Theller!

After offering the incense, the two stayed quietly in front of the tomb.

The mountain breeze blew slowly, making people feel comfortable. Today was not Tomb-Sweeping Day or winter solstice, so there were few people. Looking around, they were the only ones there.

Valda Theller looked at Brian’s outfit today. He was wearing a white top, black pants, and shoes. The simple black and white outfit set off his model-like figure and made him look clean, smart, and collected.

He was only standing there but looked like a celebrity or supermodel out of a poster.
