“We are coming for you Talon. Hold on.” Araiya whispered on the wind, and forced more air to fill the dragons’ wings and propel them faster.
Talon has turned out toward the Deep, Araiya.
He is
following the path you laid out.
He answered?
Yes, finally.
Did he tell you anything?
No, just that I need to tell you to hurry. Cut toward the Deep now and you may intercept him by the island. He is a little lost. I asked Warryn where the island is located exactly and I set both of you a beacon. Guide your mates to the shimmer to your direct left and fly Araiya. Talon is failing. Save my son, Young Mother.
“Mac, head left. Call for the others.” Araiya leaned down and hit Mac’s side. He looked back, and trumpeted as he dove left. Araiya pushed more and more power into the wind. Terran trumpeted back and flew over Mac again, depositing River behind her.
“What’s wrong?”
“Talon cut over the ocean. Airyn was finally able to get through. Talon won’t say what’s wrong but that he is heading to the island marker. We are trying to intercept him, his power is failing and Airyn is worried that if we can’t catch up, he won’t make it. I refuse to lose him River.”
“We won’t. I am going to shift. Terran and I will take point.”? River was about to stand but Araiya grabbed his hand.
“Airyn created a shimmer, a marker, to show the way to go.” Araiya pointed in front of them.
“He’s done it before. We won’t lose it. Focus all your power on filling our wings. We are close now.”
“How do you know?” Araiya squinted the direction that River was pointing, and she saw…nothing. A few birds flying over the water. “Birds?”
“That bird is Talon’s dragon. We will catch him soon.” River dove off Mac, Araiya screaming after him, but his blue dragon flew up from under them, taking point.
“Over dramatic fucking dragons.” Araiya swore Mac rumbled a chuckle between her legs. But Araiya did as River told her, and drew the winds to their wings and tucked herself flat against Mac’s back to prevent her from flying back or being ripped from the saddle.
Flying through the air was exciting and exhilarating. Now that Araiya was awake to appreciate the views, and the feel of the wind whipping around her, she loved it. Once the race to save her friend was over she would take the time to enjoy the experience.
She looked out and couldn’t see anything with the wind whipping her face. It hurt to Keep her eyes open. So, she created a small bubble of calm air around her eyes so that she could see out. She looked out again and River was right, they were gaining on Talon.
But what was happening froze her blood.
Talon was being chased by a familiar gold dragon.
Thankfully, Zephyr didn’t have access to Air to help him fly any longer.
The black dragons with Zeph and Shavon were gaining on Talon, or Talon’s strength was failing. Either way, he wasn’t going to make it. That wasn’t something Araiya was willing to accept. So, when Araiya had to watch as one of the black dragons caught Talon’s tail in his mouth, she screamed.
Araiya screamed and the call echoed over the water. The ember inside Araiya reacted and the black dragon went up in flames, surprising it and causing it to let go. It wasn’t as hurt as she had hoped, but it had the reaction she wanted. Talon surged forward, finally seeing he wasn’t alone. The ones attacking stumbled mid-flight, seeing they were up against all of the rest of the Enforcers, but Zephyr’s hubris wasn’t allowing him to tuck tail.
Neither was Shavon, by her screams. Araiya pushed wind into Talons wings, pushing him faster, pushing them all faster. They were almost to the island when something caught Araiya’s eyes.
Something was beneath the waves, something giant. Something was speeding under them. Before she could even call out a warning, it breached the waves.
River was falling before anyone could react. Mac, Talon and Terran trumpeted in despair but they couldn’t slow. They needed to make it over to the island. But Araiya refused to leave him to whatever that was. His body shifted back from his dragon right before he hit the waves. And Araiya had to watch in horror as whatever that monster was circled back around to his unconscious form and he sunk below the waves.
“Mac. Get Talon and Terran to the island.” Araiya leaned over and unbuckled her legs. “I will save River. No one is taking any of my mates today. Save Talon.” She tapped his side once, and he dove. He circled back to as close as he could to where River went in and Araiya jumped off his back.
She dove into the Deep without regard for her own safety.
River was down there. River needed help.
Araiya breached the surface and watched in horror as the dragons clashed together. They finally had caught up, and now the battle was on.
But Araiya’s battle lurked deeper. She took one last breath and dove.
Warryn, we were attacked beneath the waves.
River is out cold and shifted back to his regular form. I can’t see him. Help me.
