“It’s just a fake family. Our marriage was never real. We only got married because you don’t want our child to be a bastard. I didn’t end the marriage because I want to see how boring life with you really is.”
She sighed bitterly. “Yeah, I’m a pretty boring wife.” She also hoped they could have a happy marriage, but perhaps a marriage based on a deal was never going to be happy from the start.
“But it’s just a family photo. Consider it my last plea to you. I won’t ask you for anything more than that, so will you please say yes?” she pleaded with him.
His eyes glimmered. “You won’t ask me for anything else? Kyla, don’t you think you should be asking me to save you? If something does happen to your liver, I’m the only person who can donate you a liver!”
His deep voice with a hint of sarcasm rang in the ward.
“But you’ll also be at risk. It’s only been more than six years since your last liver transplant. It’ll be too risky for you to donate again,” she said.
“What’s the matter? Are you worried about me? You don’t care if people like me live or die.” His body suddenly leaned forward, and his face was close to hers. His piercing eyes almost penetrated her.
Kyla looked at the face right before her eyes and suddenly raised her hands. She put them gently around his neck, laying her face upon his shoulder.
He was taken aback by her sudden actions.
He tried to push her away, but his body seemed to instinctively resist and come closer to her as if he wanted her to hold him tighter.
“Martin Weiss, don’t donate your liver to me. Don’t gamble your life away. Giving birth to this baby is my gamble, not yours. So, I’m not going to ask you to donate your liver. I only hope you’ll visit the kids more often and bond with them when you’re free.” All she wanted was for him to live well. That was already a blessing for her.
He stiffened, and her speech scared him. It was as if she was giving her last words.
No way. She should not know about her current liver condition. He, Jason, and Grace had reached an agreement that the doctor would not reveal her true condition to her.
“If you’re saying that to use the baby to arouse my sympathy and make me feel sorry and give you my liver, you’d better forget about it. I’m not going to sacrifice myself like that for a woman who doesn’t love me.”
She ended the hug with a smile. “I know you won’t. Martin Weiss, I have no regrets for you. I want to sleep now, so can you please leave?”
Perhaps she would ery in his presence if he did not leave now. She had so many regrets for him that she wished she did not have this illness so that she could tell him that she loved him and was willing to be with him again.
No matter how much pain they had experienced together, she wanted to try again. She wanted them to try being together again!
It was a pity she could never say that to him.
This regret was destined to accompany her to her grave!
Martin Weiss’s face darkened as he left without saying a word.
When the sound of the ward door closing rang, tears fell from Kyla’s eyes.
Some love turned out to be so painful and so difficult!
The next day, Jason took Grace to tMason Swansonty’s best maternity hospital for a check-up. Kyla was also admitted to the same hospital for her pregnancy.
“I’ve been coming to this hospital a lot lately.” Grace could not help saying with a sigh. “Let’s go visit Kyla later after I’m done.”
“Okay,” answered Jason.
Grace underwent a series of tests in the hospital and was told that the baby already had a heartbeat when she did the ultrasound.
Grace’s eyes reddened instantly. “The baby’s heartbeat! That means the baby in my belly truly exists.’
After coming out of the ultrasound room, Grace put a hand on her belly, her eyes reddening.
Jason quickly walked forward and said, “What’s wrong? Did you just cry?”
Grace sniffed. “The baby already has a heartbeat. It’s one baby. The doctor says the baby’s statistics are good so far.”
“Did the doctor say you’re in good shape to have a baby?” he quickly asked.
“The ultrasound is only to check the baby’s condition. We need to evaluate all other aspects to know whether I’m capable of carrying the child,” said Grace.”
She knew he would not have asked such a silly question under normal circumstances. He had just become muddle-headed due to his concern.
The two went to the consultation room again. The doctor in charge of overseeing Grace’s case was a highly respected obstetrics and gynecology specialist in Emerald City.
“Judging from the current situation, everything’s fine. It’s just that your uterus was injured before, and it was also damaged when you were pregnant with your triplets. We don’t know whether your body will be able to provide adequate nutrition to the baby yet. We also have to wait until the baby is older to see if the placenta is attached to the C-section’s incision. It could be dangerous if it is, and we would recommend you terminate the pregnancy.”
The doctor cited two potential risks and said, “We need to see your other test results before making a final decision. Those reports should come out in a week.”
Jason was worried as they left the hospital, and Grace asked, “What’s wrong? The doctor said we have to wait and see. Besides, the baby hasn’t grown its placenta. What if the placenta is alright? Then there’s no danger at all.”
“But if…”
Her finger was pressed against his lips. “Jay, I promise I won’t bet my life on this because I know it’s not just my life I’m betting on but yours too!” “Do you really want this baby?” he murmured.
Her eyes were full of reluctance. “I’m reluctant to give the baby up, so I’ll do everything I can to save this little life. But if it comes to the last resort, I…”
It turned out it was difficult to utter some things. It turned out that some things were uncomfortable just thinking about them.
“It all depends on luck, the baby’s luck and mine.” Her voice choked slightly as she looked down and said to the little baby in her belly whose heartbeat had just developed, “Baby, will you give your best and let me give birth to you? I’m dying to see you.”
What answered her was a hug from Jason!
A week. It would take a week for them to confirm if she was physically fit to continue the pregnancy.
However, the test results they had received today were not too bad.
Grace told herself to stay happy and take care of her diet now so that the baby could be healthy.
The two walked toward the inpatient department, intending to visit Kyla. However, Kyla’s ward was empty when they reached it. Even the bodyguards Jason had assigned to protect Kyla were nowhere to be seen.
Grace quickly asked the nurse at the nurses’ station and learned that there was suddenly something wrong with Kyla’s condition earlier. The doctor had taken her to the operating room for a C-section after checking on her.
“What? A C-section?” Grace was shocked.
“Yes, the patient wanted to hold on for a few more days before delivering the baby, but the doctor said it’ll probably kill both mother and baby if she doesn’t have a C-
section now,” the nurse replied.
Grace’s heart instantly sank. Although Kyla was having a C-section and the baby was already seven months old, babies that young had a low survival rate.
She knew that Kyla intended to wait until the baby was eight months old before delivering them.
However, the doctor had urgently brought Kyla over for a C-section. She must be in critical condition.
After asking the nurse for the location of the operating room, Grace and Jason hurried to the waiting area.
Grace saw Mrs. Corbyn and the bodyguards here.
The two bodyguards hurried forward to report the situation, and Mrs. Corbyn looked like she was about to cry. “What do we do? Isn’t her C-section supposed to be in a week or two? Why did it suddenly…
The doctor sounded pretty serious. Is Kyla going to be okay?”
The elderly woman was at a loss.
Grace hurried to comfort Mrs. Corbyn. “I just asked the nurse. Kyla has the best doctors operating on her, and they’ve been studying Kyla’s case. It’ll be okay. Kyla will make it through.”
What Grace did not mention was that the doctors had said that Kyla’s liver was taking too big of a toll on her. Without a liver transplant after the C-section, Kyla would probably not survive for longer than a year. However, they had not found the right liver so far. Martin Weiss was the only person who could donate his liver to Kyla, but Martin Weiss…
After calming Mrs. Corbyn down, Grace called Martin Weiss.
The phone rang several times before the call was finally picked up. “What’s the matter?” Martin Weiss’s deep and cold voice came from the phone.
“Kyla’s condition suddenly became critical, and the doctors are now performing an emergency C-
section on Kyla in the operating room. I thought as her husband and the father of the baby, you should come over and take a look,” she said.
The other end of the line was silent.
Grace’s heart was racing as she nervously waited for his reply.
