They were only a few steps from each other, but there seemed to be a chasm between them that they could never cross.
“I’ve learned that it was indeed the Mitchell family’s fault that you were sent to a mental hospital, but we can’t go back in time. Why don’t we talk about compensation now?” George Gregory said, looking as though he was negotiating a business deal.
“Compensation?” Amber Mitchell burst into laughter. “Are you saying you want to give me compensation?”
“It’ll only cause the Mitchell family trouble if this goes on. It’ll bring no benefit to you. Your shares have long since been diluted and transferred away. You should think about how to get enough money to move on from this.”
Amber Mitchell suddenly found the man in front of her unfamiliar. It was as if she had never known him.
Perhaps she had never known him to begin with.
George Gregory’s voice continued to ring in her cars. “I can get the Mitchell family to return the rest of your shares and give you another one hundred million dollars as compensation. Meanwhile, you can go abroad or stay in Deer City. If you go abroad, your accommodation and necessities will be provided. If you stay in Deer City, I can buy you a mansion, which will be better than the simple rental house you’re staying in now.”
“What do you want me to do? You’re not giving me these benefits for free, are you?” She looked at him indifferently.
“All you have to do is publicly state that you’ve recovered and moved back to the Mitchell family’s house. At least pretend to bury the hatchet with the Mitchell family,” said George Gregory.
“George Gregory, you know Louise Mitchell and the rest framed me and forced me into a mental hospital even though I was fine, but you want me to tell the public that I was a mental patient? I recovered because they put me in the hospital, and I’m grateful to them? You want me to pretend everything’s fine?”
Her sarcastic voice made him frown slightly. “Since it has happened, you should think about your future life. Do you think you can depend on Grace and the Reed family forever?”
“It turns out you don’t know right from wrong and good from. evil. You speak so nonchalantly. If someone had locked you up in a mental hospital for so many years in the best years of your life, would you be able to do what you just said?” Amber Mitchell said with amusement.
“What do you want?” George Gregory asked coldly.
She shouted, “What do I want? I want the truth to be revealed to the public and the Mitchell family to get what they deserve! Do you have any idea what it’s like for a mentally sane person to be forced to undergo treatment in a mental institution? Do you have any idea what it’s like to be abused like animals every day?
Even-“
She jerked up her right hand. The gap where her missing finger should be was so glaring.
“Do you know how I lost this finger?” she asked with a chuckle.
However, her smile gave him a strange uneasiness. It was as if the truth would be too much for him to bear.
His lips opened and closed. He asked, “How… did you lose it?”
“Remember the wedding ring you gave me? You left the ring. with me after buying it, and I happened to be wearing it the day I was admitted to the mental hospital. I was so upset and sad that day because I knew my and Herman’s car accident had made you the laughing stock of tMason Swansonty. Back then, I thought that I would marry you and love you forever if you believed that I never betrayed you. If you didn’t believe me, I’d break off the engagement, resist all abuse, and not let you suffer the slightest injustice.”
The decision she had thought about thousands of times over came out of her mouth so calmly.
He had no idea how anxious she was when she made the decision.
She loved him and did not want him to suffer due to the incident, so she was willing to shoulder the burden herself.
However, she had no idea that fate would play such a big prank on her.
George Gregory’s expression changed slightly as if he never expected her to make such a decision.
“You said you wanted me to believe you, but how could I believe you loved me when you were like that with Herman Moss?!” he yelled while staring at her.
She smiled indifferently. “It seems that we wouldn’t have ended up together even if I wasn’t admitted to the mental hospital. It’s because you’ve never really believed me.”
He was suddenly flustered. However, why was he flustered? He was still the high and mighty President George Gregory, while she was only the eldest heiress of the Mitchell family who had lost everything.
Amber Mitchell paused. “You might or might not believe what I’m going to say. I was wearing the ring when I was forcibly admitted to the mental hospital. Louise Mitchell said I didn’t deserve the ring. But my finger was red and swollen because I kept struggling when I was admitted to the hospital. I couldn’t take the ring off at all. Do you know what she did after that?”
George Gregory suddenly gasped. Even if Amber Mitchell did not continue, he could figure it out.
“She had someone cut off my finger. She flushed it and the ring down the toilet. She said, ‘Amber Mitchell, you’ll never get to wear another wedding ring!”” The smile on her lips grew wider, while her eyes were full of sarcasm.
George Gregory suddenly felt a severe tightness in his chest. ‘So, that’s… how she lost her finger!’
He had no idea about it!
He seemed to be full of anger and guilt. He was mad that Louise Mitchell would do such a thing to her biological sister, and he felt guilty as he could have saved her back then.
He would have found something if he had investigated carefully. However, he deliberately told people around him not to mention her in front of him.
Though he hated her for betraying him and for making him the laughing stock of Mason Swansonty, he had never intended for her to end up like that.
Amber Mitchell put her hand in front of George Gregory as if to make him see it more clearly.
“Do you still think I should tell everyone that I’m mentally ill and brought this upon myself? Do you think the Mitchell family didn’t do me wrong, and my good sister spared no effort to find a doctor to treat my illness before I finally recovered?” she asked.
George Gregory could not speak a word. Her right hand seemed a hundred or even a thousand times more glaring than before.
“George Gregory, I don’t want money. All I want is justice! I want justice even if I have to break my bones for it!” Amber Mitchell said every word with great ease.
He could hardly take his eyes off of her.
He recalled her saying to him with a smile, “George Gregory, I don’t want money. I just want to be together forever. Can you do that?”
He had replied to her without hesitation back then, “Yes. Amber Mitchell, I’ll never marry anyone but you.”
He had broken his word in the end.
She wanted them to be together forever, but he failed her.
Now, she was going to get justice for herself.
Louise Mitchell was talking with her mother on the phone. “Mom, don’t worry. George has promised to help the Mitchell family. After all, he doesn’t want Simon to have an ex-convict as his mother. Amber Mitchell can’t make a scene if George is willing to do something.”
“But Amber Mitchell seems to have the Reed family from Emerald City helping her,” Mrs. Mitchell said anxiously.
“The Reed family is only powerful in Emerald City. They have no say in Deer City,” said Louise Mitchell.
Just then, there was suddenly a bang. Someone kicked the door open and barged into the room.
Louise Mitchell was about to lose her temper but froze when she saw George Gregory looking sullen.
“George, what happened to you?”
“Did you cut off Amber Mitchell’s finger because she was wearing the diamond ring I gave her for our wedding?” George, Gregory asked sharply.
“I… I…” Louise Mitchell was astounded, not expecting George Gregory to ask her that. “George, did Amber Mitchell tell you some nonsense? She lost her finger when she self-harmed. It has nothing to do with me!”
“It has nothing to do with you?” George Gregory’s expression was frigid. “Say to my face again that it has nothing to do with you.”
Guilt flickered in Louise Mitchell’s eyes, but she said calmly, “It really has nothing to do with me!”
George Gregory stared at Louise Mitchell intently. The next moment, he raised his hand and grabbed Louise Mitchell’s hand before pulling up her middle finger.
As if realizing something, Louise Mitchell immediately shouted, “No, George. I’m your wife! Would you rather believe the woman who betrayed you than me?”
However, Louise Mitchell soon gave a piercing wail. Sounds of bones cracking rang out.
Her middle finger had been snapped.
“Does it hurt?” George Gregory asked indifferently.
Louise Mitchell covered her right hand, “Why… Why? I’m your wife! And she… she’s the one who betrayed you. Did you break my finger for her?”
Louise Mitchell shouted with grief and anger.
“She betrayed me, but that doesn’t mean you can cut off her finger like that. Your pain isn’t a tenth of what she suffered then. If it isn’t because you’re my wife, do you think you’ll still be able to keep this finger?” George Gregory said coldly.
Louise Mitchell shivered suddenly. He had never forgotten Amber Mitchell.
