“I’m going to meet Deer City’s local tyrant and deliver a gift on my daughter’s behalf!” Grace said with a smile.
Grace came to the Barlow family’s house in the evening.
Philip Barlow was a little surprised that Grace came alone. “Mrs. Reed, it’s rare for you to come here alone. Did your two children run away from home again, so you came to me to look for them?”
“No, I’m in Deer City with my friends for something. Besides, Jasper asked me to bring William a small gift,” said Grace.
Hearing this, Philip Barlow told a maid, “Call Young Master here.”
“Yes,” the maid responded.
After a while, William came down to the living room. As soon as he saw Grace, affection immediately appeared in his eyes.
After all, aunt Cummins was one of the few who was kind to him even when he was looked down upon.
Most importantly… aunt Cummins was Jasper’s mommy!
William walked over, but his eyes could not help looking around as if hoping to catch a glimpse of someone.
As if reading his mind, Grace said, “Jasper didn’t come with me today, but she’ll come to Deer City this weekend. You can see her then.”
William’s disappointed eyes immediately lit up after hearing the last half of Grace’s speech.
“Jasper is coming this weekend?” he asked.
“Yes, she misses you,” Grace said as she took out the paper frog.” This is the paper frog Jasper learned to fold. She asked me to give it to you. She said she’ll teach you to fold many paper frogs when she comes over.”
William took the paper frog with his little hands and stared blankly at the words ‘William’ scrawled on the frog’s back. The girl’s pretty little face seemed to appear before his eyes.
‘Jasper misses me too!
‘She hasn’t forgotten me!’
William took the paper frog back to his room and held it gently against his chest as if he was hugging the person he wanted to see the most.
“Jasper, I miss you so much!” his young voice murmured.
‘I want to… I want to see her soon! I’ll learn how to fold paper frogs from her and fold many, many of them…’
In the living room, Philip Barlow looked at Grace with a half-smile and said, “Mrs. Reed, I don’t think you’re here tonight just to deliver a paper frog.”
“There’s one more thing I hope you can do for me if it’s convenient, Mr. Barlow,” said Grace.
“Oh? I wonder what I can do to help you, Mrs. Reed?” Philip Barlow asked.
“I wonder how much you know about the heiress of the Mitchell family getting sent to a mental hospital, Mr. Barlow,” said Grace.
Philip Barlow’s eyes narrowed slightly. “What’s the matter? Are you interested in this matter, Mrs.Reed?”
Grace said, “I have a close friend who the heiress of the Mitchell family had once saved before, so she’s considered a friend of a friend. If I have anything that needs to be done in Deer City, I hope you can help us, Mr. Barlow. The Reed family will return the favor in the future.”
Philip Barlow smiled. “Speaking of which, I owe the Reed family a favor. If the Reed family hadn’t taken care of William during that period, maybe he would have suffered more before I found him.”
After a pause, Philip Barlow said, “I don’t know much about the heiress of the Mitchell family. I only know what was in the news at the time. Of course, I heard that the Mitchell family was afraid that the heiress would fight for power, so they claimed that the heiress was ill and sent her to a mental hospital even when she was not. Besides that, the heiress’ own father and fiancé believed she was mentally ill. There were diagnosis reports from well-
known experts as well. Hence, the voices of doubt soon died down. It seems that the heiress has been in the mental hospital ever since.”
Grace said, “Yes, she has spent eight years in the mental hospital. Do you know about George Gregory’s relationship with Amber Mitchell, the heiress of the Mitchell family? From what I know, the Gregory family also has some business dealings with the Barlow family, and it seems that you and George Gregory were once schoolmates.”
Philip Barlow said, “He’s my junior. At least, in my opinion, he and the heiress of the Mitchell family
were a sweet couple! He probably loved that woman. He never cared that she had gone to prison, but…
“But when she did get out of prison, he wanted to break off the marriage for unknown reasons. That’s all I know,” said Philip Barlow.
Grace said, “Thank you. I got more information than I expected. I gotta go. I’ll visit another day.”
After Grace left, Philip Barlow closed his eyes slightly. “The Mitchell family… Amber Mitchell…”
Speaking of which, the name had not been mentioned in Deer City for a long time.
It was as if the name that used to be well-regarded had been forgotten in the river of time.
He remembered that George Gregory was drunk in a private room in a nightclub the night he talked about breaking off their marriage. He happened to pass by, so he decided to do a good deed and take him home.
However, George Gregory hugged him and cried, “Why… Why are you doing this to me? Why?”
It confused him until he heard his mouth vaguely uttering the words ‘Amber Mitchell. He then realized that George Gregory was not talking to him but thought he was Amber Mitchell.
“Amby… I… I don’t want to do this anymore… If you can’t give me all your love, then… I’d rather not have any! I, George Gregory, can’t marry you. Even though we’re engaged, I can… break off this engagement!”
The man was reeking with the smell of alcohol, but his voice was choking as he laughed and cried.
He knew how proud his junior was. He had always been privileged. The only time he let go of his pride was for Amber Mitchell.
It was said that George Gregory fell in love with Amber Mitchell at first sight and pursued her passionately. He did not care even though she had been to prison.
They were supposed to get married a month later, but Amber Mitchell was sent to a mental hospital.
George Gregory was indifferent to that and even married Amber Mitchell’s stepsister, Louise Mitchell, three months later.
“It looks like there might be another storm in Deer City,” Philip Barlow said quietly.
Nothing hurt more than ‘love’, so he would not get hurt if he did not fall in love with anyone!
“No, you can’t… Ah!” With a scream, Kyla gasped and suddenly opened her eyes only to be met with darkness.
She was confused between dream and reality for a while until she heard Martin Weiss’s voice in her ear. “What’s wrong? Did you have a nightmare?”
Then the lights in the room lit up, and Kyla saw Martin Weiss’s face with a touch of cagerness and concern as he approached her.
‘Eagerness and concern. Is he… worried about me?’
“What’s the matter? What seems to be the trouble?” His face grew more worried when he saw her in a daze. He even laid one hand on her forehead.
Kyla murmured, “I… just had a bad dream. I dreamed of Amber Mitchell… I dreamed that she was tortured and abused in the hospital…”
She suddenly grabbed his hand and said, “Martin Weiss, I beg you. Let me see Amber Mitchell again as soon as possible. I want to find out what’s going on. What she’s going through isn’t treatment at all.
It’s abuse!”.
Martin Weiss said, “I can take you to her as soon as possible and help you find out what’s going on, but… it doesn’t mean I’m willing to get involved in this. Don’t forget. Our initial deal was just that probation for Jacqueline Bowman. I came here with you. We’re going back if we can’t handle Amber Mitchell’s situation.”
“But…”
“No buts. Kyla, you’re not god. You can help with some things, but what about those you can’t? Are you
going to stay in Deer City forever? Besides, don’t forget what matters the most to you right now! You might have to give birth in less than two months! I won’t forgive you if you let anything happen to the baby!” Martin Weiss said.
Kyla’s expression changed slightly. She opened her mouth as if to say something, but she ended up saying, “Got it.”
What he was worried about was the baby in her belly!
Two days later, Martin Weiss let Kyla meet Amber Mitchell again, but the meeting this time was more private. He only secretly took Kyla to Amber Mitchell’s ward, and for only 15 minutes.
“You can only take 15 minutes at most. If you took longer than that and got caught by the Mitchell family’s spics, it’ll probably be harder to see Amber Mitchell in the future. After all, Amber Mitchell’s legal guardian now is Louise Mitchell,” warned Martin Weiss.
Louise Mitchell could exercise her rights as a guardian to protect Amber Mitchell from outsiders. She could even transfer Amber Mitchell to another hospital or hide her in a place where they could not find her, which would only cause more trouble.
“Got it,” answered Kyla.
’15 minutes? Only 15 minutes to get the answer I’m looking for?’
Kyla followed Martin Weiss into the ward, where she saw Amber Mitchell’s thin body-almost skin and bones, curled up in a ball.
Kyla wanted to rush over but was stopped by Martin Weiss.
“If you have anything to say, stand here and say it. Don’t get too close. It’s not clear whether she’s mentally ill,” said Martin Weiss. After all, if Amber Mitchell was mentally ill and attacked, Kyla was in no condition to withstand any aggression.
Kyla could only stand one meter away from Amber Mitchell and said, “Amber Mitchell, it’s me. I’m Kyla.
If you’re not crazy, would you look up at me? I’ve had a hard time finding you. I’m still waiting for you to tell me what happened and how you became mentally ill!”
Kyla kept talking and shouting. She described everything that had happened in prison just to awaken Amber Mitchell’s memory and to remind Amber Mitchell of her.
She did not notice Martin Weiss’s expression, and the look in his eyes had changed slightly when he heard what had happened in prison.
Time passed little by little.
Just when Kyla was about to be disappointed, Amber Mitchell slowly looked up at Kyla with those dim eyes.
“Amber Mitchell!” Kyla was delighted. “Do… do you recognize me? It’s been years. I know… I know I’m a little different than I was then, but I brought an old photo with me. You… you can take a look at my photo. And Nelson. Do you remember Nelson? I showed you the photo before!”
Kyla said as she took out a photo of her holding Nelson, who was only three years old, from her pocket.
When she went to see Amber Mitchell after being released from prison, she showed her the photo because she did not bring Nelson with her, and Amber Mitchell said she wanted to see how old Nelson was and what he looked like.
In the photo, Nelson was smiling innocently-even though Kyla’s eyes had a faint sadness.
Kyla still remembered Amber Mitchell looking at the photo of Nelson for a long time and muttering, “I wonder when I will be a mother. If I have a child, I’ll dote on them so much too…”
Martin Weiss yanked Kyla’s photo from her hand and placed it in front of Amber Mitchell.
Amber Mitchell looked blankly at the picture, lost in thought.
Martin Weiss looked at the time. 15 minutes was almost up.
“Alright, time’s up. We should go. Maybe… she really is mentally ill and can no longer communicate with you like a normal person,” Martin Weiss said to Kyla.
Kyla’s face was full of reluctance. Just leave?’
When Martin Weiss was about to take back the photo, Amber Mitchell’s mutilated right hand grasped it with a shudder as tears poured out of her eyes.
“Kyla…” Her lips parted, and her voice was unusually dry and hoarse as if she had not spoken for years, and one had to figure out what she was saying.
Kyla was startled. “Amber Mitchell… Do you… do you remember me? Could you tell me… what’s going on? Why were you sent to a mental hospital by your family? Are you really…”
Her voice suddenly stopped because Amber Mitchell’s lips moved as she struggled to utter, “Save…me.”
