“Hi,” I said softly. “It’s me, Lia.”

“I… I know. Is everything okay?”,

He knew there was no way I’d call him unless I really needed something.

“Yes, everything’s fine,” I replied. “For now.”

“For now?”

I bit my lip, trying to find the right words.

“Look, Blake. There is a favour I need from you, but I can’t tell

Zane about it.”

His tone perked up. “Of course, Lia. Anything for you.”

“It’s not anything like that, alright? I don’t have any interest in you,” I stated clearly.

There was a short pause on the other end.

“I’m aware.”

“Good. I want you to remember that if you’re going to agree to help me.”

Blake chuckled humourlessly. “It’s the most painful truth of my life, Lia. I don’t forget about it for even a second.”

“Okay,” I said, nodding. “I want you to help me find out what I am, and how to control it.”

Blake fell silent again. “Why isn’t Zane doing that?”

I swallowed. “I think he is. I think he knows everything. But he’s keeping secrets to protect me. To spare me the worry and to keep me safe.”

“So you came to me? Because you think I’m so desperate to be around you, that I’ll never turn you down?”

I felt called out.

“Well, yes. I guess.”

Blake sighed. “I wish I could tell you you’re wrong.”

Bingo.

“So you’re going to help me?”

“Yes. I will. How do you wanna do this?”

“I don’t know. But whatever it is, it has to happen over the weekend and I cannot leave my house for it.”

“Why not?”

“Because… I’ll feel safer here,” I said, keeping the tracker part from him.

“You’re not in any kind of danger from me, Lia.”

“I can’t trust you completely, Blake,” I said. “After what you did, I can’t exactly risk it.”

“Alright, “he replied. “But I’m gonna need a day before I come to you. I’ll get us some books from back home. We can read them together and try to figure out what you are.”

I frowned. “You have books like that?”

“Of course. Every pack house has a library with ancient scriptures. Some authentic, others not so much.”

“Then Zane must have one as well.”

“He probably does. Which is why I asked why he isn’t helping you in the first place.”

I felt an odd uneasiness in my chest. Why was Zane hiding this from me? Was he even researching, or did he not care?

No, that wasn’t possible. Zane cared about me deeply. There was no way he didn’t find out yet.

Or maybe, whatever I was wasn’t in the books he had.

-LIA’S POV-

“Hello?”

I got pulled out of my thoughts. “Right, sorry. Uh, okay. You can come tomorrow. Does that work?”

“It does. I’ll call you before showing up.”

“Okay. Also… is there any way we can hide your scent from my bedroom after you leave? Zane sleeps here every night.”

“I’ll find a way, “Blake said curtly. “Bye, Lia.”

“Bye.”

I sighed, hanging up on him.

I hated that I was hiding it from Zane. I hated that I was going behind his back. But I’d tried talking to him. I’d begged him to search for answers, and he hadn’t. Or if he had, he was keeping it from me.

I couldn’t let him take complete charge of my life like that. I still had a say in it, even if I was his mate, no matter his intentions.

Nothing would go wrong. I’d be at home, with my phone in my hands and Zane on speed dial. If anything happened, I’d call him immediately.

Besides, Blake had me unconscious for a whole hour, and he still didn’t do anything.

Maybe I wasn’t in as much danger as I thought.

Everything would be fi-

My thought was interrupted as Zane jumped in through the window. My heartbeat quickened, fingers tightening around my phone.

“Hey,” he said with a frown. “Everything alright? You look scared.” He sat down beside me, studying my face.

“Yes, yes. Everything is fine,” I replied, smiling. “I’m not scared.”

“Are you sure?” he asked, pushing my hair away from my face, letting his hand linger on my neck.

My heart skipped a beat now, butterflies erupting in my stomach.

“Y-Yes,” I replied.

He narrowed his eyes, then his lips curled into a smirk. “Oh. You’re not scared. Just flustered.”

I looked away from him as heat rose to my cheeks.

Zane chuckled, taking my chin and forcing me to meet his gaze. “What is it? Are you still thinking about that day?” He leaned in closer, until our lips were inches apart.

“Yes,” I said honestly, “I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it.”

“Mhm? Don’t worry, my love, it’ll happen soon enough. I want you more than you want me.”

I smiled. “You can’t know that for sure. For all you know, I’m something more romantic than a werewolf.”

“Not possible,” Zane said immediately.

“You don’t know that,” I shrugged, “you don’t even know what I am.”

He lowered his gaze as soon as I said that.

My mouth parted. He knew. He was hiding it from me.

“Whatever you are, my love, you’re still in this world. And I know for sure that no one and nothing in this world can love anyone or anything as much as I love you.”

Even despite the doubts I had about him hiding things from me, his words still spread warmth in my heart.

I leaned in, and pressed my lips against his, breathing in his comforting scent.

Zane didn’t pull away until I did, and gave me a gentle smile.

“I love you, my little Lia,” he whispered, kissing my check.

“I love you too, Zane. More than anyone else.”

“We’ll get through everything, I promise. I know I haven’t been able to keep you happy.”
