“What are you doing?” Araiya watched him with amusement.
“I am sitting on the ground so that I cannot see into the tub, to give you as much privacy as I can, while still being in the room to read to you.” River looked up and raised an eye brow. “I assumed you would want that while you get clean.”
Araiya was momentarily stunned as she nodded her head. He really was an amazing mate. To assume that. Araiya blushed as she caught sight of his smirk, fuck, she must have said it out loud again. Araiya sunk deeper into the hot water and submerged herself, while fighting off the blush.
“Are you listening, lamb?” Rivers voice pulled her from her watery bed.
“Yes, I am,” she lied as she caught her breath.
“This is the diary of sorts of the Al’ta Moir, why did you want to read it?”
“She was the only other user of Spirit. From everything I have heard, the way to Spirit was lost. And we need to get to the Keep. Do you remember the way?” Araiya peeked over the lip of the bath and watched as River shook his head.
“I remember knowing how to get there, but the way is foggy. That is…”
“Intentional, I can only assume. And the answer as to why, is probably in that last book of hers. Can you read it to me?”
River agreed and opened the book. “Darkness has won this round. I am dying but I will protect everyone I love. He thinks he has won the war, but it was only in this small battle that he has taken as a victory. He missed the most important weapon we had. The spark.”
Araiya drifted in the water, listening to River read from the book. His voice lulling her with his lilting cadence. His voice was a balm to her soul as she drifted deeper into her bath.
“What are you doing here?” Araiya followed Soren’s voice to the prayer room that had become so familiar.
“Soren, please don’t send me away. I can stay here and help. Please don’t send me away.”
Araiya walked around the door frame and watched as a man, on his knees, bent over with his forehead on the ground. As if in prayer. Soren met her gazed and Araiya was surprised by the tears she saw there.
“Callin, please get up. Let me explain. I have need of you.” Callin got up off the floor and sat across from where Soren was perched on the edge of her make shift bed. Cal pulled his chair closer and leaned in. “You know I do not have much time left. The plan I have with Jay is almost completed. Once that happens, I will fade, quickly.”
“Soren, please, don’t do this. We can find a way.”
“The die has been cast. Devlin made his choice. We can only try to take steps to ensure the future. Any way we can. I will not allow our realm to fade. I will not allow the darkness to win.” Soren smacked her hands down on to the bed and Cal jumped.
Cal took a few breaths before he wiped his face, and the sat straighter. “What would you have of me, Al’ta Moir?” Araiya jolted. Soren was the All Mother. Of course, she was, Araiya wanted to smack herself for not making the connection sooner.
“You, Jay, and a trusted guardian duo, will flee. You will take the spark and head across the deep to the Metal Keep.”
“The spark?” Cal started, but Soren raised her hand.
“The spark, the sliver of my mother’s soul handed to me at the beginning. You will take my mate and run, and then you will fade from existence. No one will remember you. Metal will be forgotten as an element. Jay will be forgotten as my mate, and the two guardians will also be forgotten.” Soren cupped his face. “Your path will be lonely, but the most important. You hold the only weapon we have against the darkness. The only way we can win.”
“How will-“
“The Chosen will find you. She will come with your brothers when the end draws near. Stay strong my friend. The others will only remember who you are when it is time, and the block is broken. And there is only one way for the block to be broken.” Soren looked over at Araiya as she whispered in Callin’s ear. He jolted back, but his mouth had dropped open as he stared at Soren. “You cannot tell them, never, even after they remember. The Chosen must find her own path. I only tell you so that you know your journey is needed. You will forget the truth once you are in Metal. You have the most important task. My most cherished item is going with you. Do you understand?”
Callin’s mouth opened and closed like a fish a few moments before his eyes cleared and he dropped to his knees again. This time he wrapped his arms around Soren and hugged her. “I will miss you more then you will ever know. But I understand. I will give my life for the spark.”
Soren patted his back, and they broke apart. “You are one of my most cherished friends and I will miss you so very much, Callin. I wish your path easier, but the coming years will be riddled with pain. The Chosen’s most of all. If she makes it to you, bring her here. She will need the spark and the Keep to unlock everything.”
Cal had just stood, when a blast had rocked the Keep. “We are under attack.”
“Get me to the book case, and then find Jay. We have run out of time. Run.” Cal wrapped his arms around Soren and helped her to the book shelf. Araiya ran over and watched as Soren pushed the hidden lever. Cal ran out of the room as the door opened and Araiya wrapped her arms around Soren helping her down the stairs.
“You don’t have any good memories that I have to learn from, do you?” Soren laughed at Araiya’s question.
“I wish we had more time; I would have shown you everything. But a thousand lifetimes are hard to compress into dreams, darling.” Araiya helped her over to the statue and watched as Soren opened the hidden room. Once the compartment was filled with blood and the statue started to move back, they heard running footsteps, and someone called for Soren.
Araiya stepped back when Soren kissed her and pushed her away.
“Here Jay, down here. We have to hurry.” Jay ran into the room and wrapped his arms around Soren, taking her weight.
“The Enforcers are fighting, but we don’t have a lot of time. Are you sure?” Jay looked lost. “I am not ready to lose you. I just found you.”
“I am sorry my love, but we have run out of time. I will wait for you beyond the veil. Death is not the end. I promise you.” The two pushed into the room behind the statue. Araiya followed but was stopped by a barrier at the statue.
She looked in to the room and froze. The spark was beautiful. A small orb, pulsing with life and light. The beat matched her heartbeat and Araiya was in awe. The spark. They needed the spark. Araiya tried to push past the barrier, but Soren shook her head softly and pushed the statue back in to place.
