-ZANE’S POV-

I stared down at her as she slept cradled in my arms, a pressing sense of guilt filling my chest.

I had failed her last night.

Even now, when she was back with me, alive and well-physically at least, I couldn’t shake the fear of losing her from my head.

What if instead of Blake, someone or something else had found her?

What if The Order had gotten to her? What if someone from our rival packs had taken her?

Worse, what if Blake had decided to claim her whilst she was unconscious?

If he marked her, it could have been over for us. I could have lost her for good.

She would have been drawn to him for the rest of her life, she would have loved him eventually, whether she wanted to or not. The mate bond’s power was unmatchable once the bond was completed and consummated. My Lia, her heart and soul would have belonged to him till the end of time.

Ajax pulled the car into the driveway of the pack house, and one of my wolves opened the door for me. I carefully picked Lia up and stepped out of the car,

She still stirred, nuzzling further. sure not to disturb her sleep. my chest. A small smile stretched over my lips. She was everything to me.

I took her to my room, and gently placed her in bed. As soon as I started to pull away, she grabbed my hand, eyes shooting open. “Where are you going?” she asked, frantic.

“Nowhere, baby,” I replied, sitting down beside her.

She stared at me, as though afraid I’d disappear.

“I’m not going anywhere,” I promised, tightly holding her hand. “Don’t worry.”

She took a deep breath relaxing slightly.

“Zane,” she whispered, “it doesn’t happen when you’re with me. I think Blake was right.”

“About?”

“I think I escape from the house to look for him.”

The idea spread a bitter taste in my mouth.

“Why do you think so?” I asked.

“Because it’s the only thing that makes sense. Think about it. Last time too, I was going in the direction of his house. And the same thing happened this time too. Do you… do you think maybe whatever I am, it needs both its mates?”

I hated every word she said.

But I swallowed my anger and distaste, offering her a rational and somewhat neutral response.

“That would make sense, but then why weren’t you looking for me?”

“That’s the thing,” she said, sitting up. “When you turned. sixteen, you started searching for me and were drawn to me. By what?”

I frowned. “Your presence. Your scent.”

“Scent,” she said, “exactly. Maybe, whatever I am, it finds your scent on my own clothes and body, so it doesn’t set out to search for you, believing you’re close. But because it doesn’t find Blake’s scent closeby, it sets out to find him. Maybe it just wants its mates to be with her.”

That was a nice theory she had come up with. And I hated that it was making sense. Sometimes, I hated that she was smart.

“That would explain a lot,” I said softly, “but that would leave us only one option to solve this issue for good.”

“What?” she asked.

I took a deep breath.

“We could kill Blake.”

-LIA’S POV-

My eyes widened. “What?”

“Yeah. If he’s dead, you won’t look for him anymore.”

I narrowed my eyes. “Zane.”

“What?” He rolled his eyes.

“You’re jealous.”

“I am. So?”

“You don’t have to be.”

“Exactly. By killing Blake, all the problems will be gone once and for all.”

“Zane,” I sighed.

“Alright, fine,” he muttered. “I’m joking.”

“You don’t look like it,” I pointed out.

“Maybe I was checking to see if you’d say yes.”

“Really? You had to check?”

Zane shrugged, unapologetic. “You’ve been unpredictable lately.”

“Just because there is a slim chance that I killed someone-a fact I haven’t even registered yet-you want me to be the reason for someone’s else death too.”

“I wasn’t serious, and you didn’t kill anyone. Shut up.”

“I could have,” I said softly.

“You didn’t. You were unconscious.”

“Okay. But we’re not killing Blake.”

“I know.” His tone softened. He took my hand, intertwining our fingers, his thumb brushing gently over my knuckles. “I just hate the thought of you going to him. Even if it’s not really you. Even if it’s whatever… other part of you that does it.”

“I don’t want to go to him,” I said quietly, staring down at our joined hands. “Not ever.”

Zane lifted my chin with two fingers, making me meet his eyes. “Then we need to fix this before it happens again.”

I nodded. “How?”

“There might be a way.”

I was pleasantly surprised to hear that. I waited for him to elaborate.

He exhaled. “If your theory’s right, that this is happening because the bond with two different people is pulling you into two different directions, then maybe finishing your bond with one person would stop it.”

I frowned. “Finishing? How?”

“By finishing, I mean completing. Consummating.”

My heart skipped a beat. “You mean…”

“Yes,” he said, voice low. His eyes went black, and I held my breath, realising how much even talking about it affected him. “I mark you. And if the need be, we consummate the bond.”

My throat went dry. I blinked at him, suddenly very aware of how close we were sitting on the bed. His hand was still wrapped around mine, his other brushing a strand of hair from my face. His lips were inches from mine.

“We’ve talked about this before,” he added softly. “I didn’t want to rush things, I wanted to give you time until we’d figure everything else out. But this isn’t just about wanting. you anymore. It’s about protecting you. If our bond is strong enough, whatever you are should be satisfied with just my scent too.”

I swallowed, hard. My skin was already littering with goosebumps. “But if we do it, and it still doesn’t stop?”

“Then we’ll try something else,” he said simply. “But if we don’t at least try, and this keeps happening, you could end up somewhere worse. Somewhere we can’t get to you in time.”

He wasn’t wrong.

Was this what I wanted?

Yes. I’d wanted for very long now.

But like this?

My silence must have worried him, because he cupped my cheek, his blue eyes full of concern. “Lia. What are you thinking?”

“That I want it to be real,” I admitted, my voice sorrowful. “Not just something we do because I’m sleepwalking.”
