CATCH UP ON THE WORLD
A CURSE OF FATE
Emmeline is a wolf shifter in a world where all packs live in cities, with multiple alphas, betas, deltas, and rarer: omegas. These designations form quintets, packs of five, and are governed by alpha councils. Emme is an omega, just like her mom, who was killed by a pack of alphas when Emme was fourteen. This was the catalyst for her to run from the cities and the alphas who controlled them. She swore she would never end up like her mom.
Fast forward over a decade and Emme has been moving between human cities, avoiding the five major pack cities at all costs, and keeping her head down. An unfortunate series of events finds her in the path of an alpha with tracking capabilities. She runs again, but he tracks her and drags her to Golden Claw, the largest of the five pack cities.
Here, she faces the Alpha Council, charged as being a rogue-a shifter without a pack city affiliation. But when they discover she’s an omega, they are less inclined to give her the usual sentence of death.
When one of the most powerful alphas scents Emme as his true mate, it’s Emme’s worst nightmare, as she believes that if she bonds with an alpha she’ll be killed the same way her mom was. Her mom’s pack was a scent match too, and they still murdered her.
When she finds out that this alpha is one of four alphas in her scent match, she believes her life is over. Quintets are usually made up of one alpha and a mix of delta and betas. Her pack, though, consists of four alpha males, making it strong, and dangerous, especially for an omega.
Just like her mom’s.
Emme has no choice but to reject the alphas, which receives mixed reactions from the four.
Hunter, the entitled alpha, doesn’t give up when he sets his mind to something, and he’s determined to win her into the pack by whatever means necessary. He convinces her to move into their pack house for a while, save up some money, and not worry. He also promises not to bond her without her explicitly begging for it. Hunter is an obsessive and possessive alpha stalker, with a goal of keeping his pack safe, and as strong as it can be. Also… hand tattoo. That is all.
Kellan, the golden retriever alpha, comes in with his sweet and kind soul (though don’t underestimate his ability to rip another shifter’s head from his shoulders if he looks the wrong way at Emme). Kellan would follow her through this life and into the next no hesitation. Emme, who has been alone her whole life, is won over by Kellan’s sweet and unconditional obsession with her.
Slade is a scary dragon shifter. Cold and clinical, he has an observational interest in Emme. She certainly intrigues him. He keeps an eye on her through security cameras, and is as intense a stalker as Hunter, just in a less forceful way. For now.
Finley, a bear shifter, doesn’t take her rejection well. It triggers his childhood trauma where he was rejected and hurt by his family. He decides she is toxic to them all, and he’s determined not to have her in their lives.
Once she’s in the pack house, bonds start to form between Emme, Kellan, and Hunter, despite her best efforts to reject them. As an omega, who can stand outside of normal pack dominance, she is desired amongst alphas, and her pack is determined to keep her safe. During one attempted kidnapping by a guard on the Reeves pack security team, she fights back long enough for Hunter and Kellan to arrive and destroy the shifter, which seals another portion of their relationship. Emme grows even closer to those two.
While investigating the attempted kidnapping to find the source-the guard was a hired hit- the end of
A Curse of Fate finds Emme and Slade on motorcycles, heading to an interrogation. On the way, they’re blown up by a rocket, and an injured Emme is thrown into the back of a van before she blacks out. When she wakes again, she’s in a basement cell, bars blocking her exit. Slade is across from her, in another cell, restrained by magical bands.
When her kidnapper steps into the room, she freaks out because it’s the entitled alpha of her mom’s old pack. They’ve been searching for her, and when she showed up on the pack register for Golden City, they took their opportunity to track her down.
This is where
A Twist of Luck begins.
CATCH UP ON THE WORLD
A TWIST OF LUCK
Book two starts with Emme and Slade as prisoners in Silver City, where they were taken and held by Blaine and his alpha pack. The Rogers pack (Blaine’s pack) uses magic to keep them contained. Meanwhile, back in Golden Claw, the Reeves pack (Emme’s pack) are hunting down anyone involved for information to find out where their kidnapped pack members are. They get a lead they’re in Silver City and jump on their plane to head straight there.
In Silver City, the kidnappers underestimate Slade’s power, and he busts through his cell to comfort Emme during a panic attack, which is triggered by being held captive again by Blaine and his pack, as they destroyed her mother and tormented her growing up.
After Slade scares away everyone in the house, they head upstairs to discover the house is magically locked down, and it’ll take the dragon shifter hours to smash them out. Thankfully, by the time he breaks through, the rest of the Reeves pack have shown up with their own witch in their ranks. To fight magic, you need magic.
They decide to regroup and head back to Golden Claw, since Blaine and his pack have vanished, but on the way to their plane they’re ambushed by a witch. She tries to hit Emme with a knockout spell but Kellan gets in between them. He’s taken down by a spell that can only be lifted by the witch who cast it, and unfortunately, she’s dead via Sladdy-I mean Slade, the dragon baddie.
They rush an unconscious and possibly dying Kellan back to Golden Claw and demand their ally witch (Jewels) figure out how to save him. With time running out, they do everything they can to keep Kellan’s energy flowing strongly, including almost naked pack huddles.
Eventually, Jewels and her coven come up with a solution, but they’re afraid Kellan is too weak to fight, even with the counterspell. With no other option, they give him the spell, and in the end he’s so weak that he can’t survive, and Emme makes the choice to bond with him in the hopes she might be able to share some of her energy.
Which works!
She gives him the strength to fight the spell. This is one of her greatest fears in bonding to alphas, as she feels this is what destroyed her mother, but she notices no changes with Kellan, and he doesn’t try to take any more of her wolf essence.
After this, everything is going fine, as they deal with the Alpha Council and what the future plans for Blaine and his pack are. Silver City puts up roadblocks to hunt the Rogers pack, and it’s all red tape and paperwork getting in the way.
Toward the end of the book, Emme bonds with Hunter (her entitled alpha) in a lovely
Hunter and Prey scenario, through the forests of Golden Claw. She makes this decision because she loves him and trusts him completely. He’s done nothing but support and care for her almost since the first moment he dragged her into their lives.
Bonding is still an experiment at this stage, as Emme still doesn’t know what will happen if she bonds all four alphas, but she’s willing to try. Her life was empty without them, and they’ve shown time and time again that they’re nothing like her mom’s pack.
She also grows closer to Slade (dragon shifter, aka scary motherfucker) as he attempts to teach her how to defend herself, which leads into a prank war. During one of these pranks, where Emme turns off the cameras momentarily, she gets herself into a bit of trouble.
She opens a book in her room about omegas and packs. A book brought to her by Chelsea from the Thenguard pack. A book she hasn’t touched since that attack at the guard house (in book 1), but which she hoped might give her answers to her designation as an omega in a pack of alphas.
The book is spelled, and has been waiting there all this time for her to open it. As soon as she flips the page, the spell is enacted and she’s under Chelsea’s control. It binds the two omegas together, and she has to follow Chelsea’s actions.
Chelsea takes her far from Golden Claw and deposits her in an old house, right into the clutches of the very alpha who’s been trying to kidnap her all along. It’s not the alpha she expected.
