Because we can’t chop down all the Yew trees in the world, we create synthesized products. So this argument of herbs are better than pills is really a moot point. It has nothing to do with Eastern vs Western culture, or medicine, it has to do with practicality, resource availability and the cost of treating illness.
Again your story is good, but you are not understanding the American perspective, and because of this the story isn’t working. Too many things that are both improbable and impossible. The two cultures have too many differences and trying to fit Americans living in the United States into Asian culture just doesn’t work.
Also the main characters are way too young for any of this to be probable. In order to be in the places they are (at least everyone except Nora the super genius) they would have to at least be in their mid 30s. People who are currently in in their 50s and early 60s are still working. The health of people in the States is very good for the most part. People in their 60s 70s and even 80s are living full vibrant lives. They travel, play sports like tennis, pickleball, golf, swimming, hiking, bike riding. They don’t just roll over and die when they stop working. Your idea of what old is doesn’t fit either. It would only seem old to someone too young and doesn’t have much life experience.
