Eric and Emma were now so in tune with each other that sometimes a glance was all it took to communicate. Eric, who’d been watching the award ceremony at home, got up and put on his jacket.

“Help me push back all the meetings I have tonight,” he said to Luke.

“Of course,” Luke said, smiling. He had noticed that Eric had become a lot more impulsive lately. Seeing this person who’d once been so rigid become spontaneous was exciting.

In the car on the way to the awards ceremony, Eric continued to listen to Emma’s acceptance speech. He completely understood the longing to connect that he’d seen in her eyes; he felt it just as strongly. The award itself was less important than the fact that it was the first award Emma had received since her comeback. He knew what this recognition would mean to her, and he wanted to be by her side at this moment to acknowledge her hard work.

On stage, Emma was dazzlingly beautiful and articulate, but the truth was she couldn’t say the words that were closest to her heart. She had no way to thank the most important person in her life.

“I have so much I want to say, but all these thoughts can be summed up in one simple sentence: thank you, everyone. I will strive to become even better.”

The audience erupted in applause that echoed throughout the hall. Out of all the awards presented that night, this was the award they felt was most deserving. Emma had truly showcased her talents and helped propel the profession. Her award was the highlight of the ceremony.

Finally, the evening ended. Mark Whittaker hadn’t given up on trying to connect with Emma, but he knew that the first task in front of him was finding Amber. At the hospital, he had to talk with her and make sure she wouldn’t expose their relationship.

The night sky was lit up with stars and sparkling with superstars. Emma left the ceremony and spotted Lisa waiting for her in front of the car. She smiled and quickly ran up to hug her employer and friend.

“Emma, congratulations!” she said. “I’m so happy for you. You’ve worked just as hard.”

“Lisa, you were with me every step of the way,” Emma thanked her and meant every word. After all, Lisa had played a large role in the whole process.

“We’ll catch up later,” Lisa said. “I want to hear all the details. Eric’s been waiting for you a long time. I’ll take the trophy home, and then Eric can take you for a drive.” Lisa gave Emma one more hug and then a cheeky wink.

Emma peered into the car, seeing the man sitting there staring at her so intensely. Her heart began to race. They dropped Lisa off at home before heading back out for a ride. Emma’s heart was full as she leaned her head on Eric’s shoulder and held tightly to his hand.

“Aren’t you going to ask where I’m taking you?” he asked, grinning.

“Anywhere is good as long as I’m with you,” Emma stared at the road in front of them.

“I’m curious, Eric. How is it you sometimes understand me better than I understand myself? How did you know that you were the person I wanted to see more than anyone right now?”

“Because our hearts are connected,” he responded simply.

Emma smiled and tightened her grasp on Eric’s hand. “Let’s find a quiet place and stop the car,” she said.

“What do you mean?” he asked.

“I just really want to kiss you right now,” Emma said with a grin as she admired Eric’s profile. Her eyes gleamed like diamonds.

He smiled back at her. “We’ve already arrived,” he told her.

Emma looked ahead of her, realizing the car had stopped at a hilltop with the lights of New York City below them sparkling like gems. “No one can come here except for us,” he added.

Emma relaxed as she turned sideways, wrapped her arms around Eric’s neck, and pulled him in for a kiss. She slowly savored the softness of his lips. Eric cupped the back of her head and kissed her back. They became more and more passionate, pausing only when they were breathless.

“My love,” he said, “now that you’ve received an award, I have a very important question. How would you like me to reward you?”

Emma kissed Eric’s ear and gently nibbled on his earlobe. After a little while, she finally responded in a soft voice, “I don’t want anything except you.”

“Are you sure you want to stay here and not go home to our soft bed?” he asked.

“I just want to be here with you right now,” she replied.

Eric pushed his seat back and brought Emma over to sit on his lap. With his long, gentle fingers, he carefully slid the zipper down her back. His touch sent tingles down her spine, and she let out a soft moan of pleasure. Emma was still the same person, but that night there was something different about her. She was direct and provocative. She began to drive Eric crazy with desire as she tried to touch him and kiss him everywhere, all at once, all in the small confines of the car.

“Emma, you’ve turned into a wild woman,” he whispered huskily.

“I told you from the start I’m not some sweet little thing,” Emma responded, her voice breathless with desire. “There’s so much I want to say to you, but when I see you, I find you already understand everything.”

Eric brushed his hand across Emma’s bare back. “You don’t need to say any more right now, but let me take you home. This can’t be the most comfortable place for you.”

“You’re right,” she said and laughed. “Let’s go home.” She gave Eric one more lingering kiss on his neck and then slid over to her seat.

At the hospital, several hours had passed since Amber arrived. She had indeed miscarried and required a surgical procedure. She was back in her hospital room, and a representative from Creative Century stood at the door to keep out the media. Her assistant waited by her bed.

“Water,” she whispered.

Her assistant immediately handed her a cup of water. “Be careful, sip it slowly,” she advised.

After a drink, Amber’s mind was finally a little clearer. She stared blankly at the hospital ceiling. “Has the awards ceremony ended?” she asked.

“Yeah, it ended a while ago,” her assistant told her. “Don’t think about it too much, just try to rest.”

Emma began to cry. “Did Emma win?”

“Amber, don’t be like this,” he said. “I’ll go look for Nathan. Don’t bother.”

Amber held on to her assistant’s arm. “That disgusting Mark Whittaker and Nathan are the same. They weren’t anything more than a game to me.”

“You’re right,” said her assistant. “And I can’t believe that Emma got an award. I wonder what she did to make them give her that special contribution award.”

“What?” said Amber. “Emma got an award? I can’t believe it. You know what, since they’ve all been so heartless, I’ll be heartless right back.

I’m not going to be the only one who’s miserable. Look in my bag for my phone. Now go into the photos. There should be a picture of the agreement between Nathan and Mark.

I want you to help me expose them. We’ll show everybody that Emma only received her award because Mark bribed the judges for her. If I’m going down, I’m gonna take them with me.”
