It was the last day of September, and the annual model award ceremony was set to take place at seven o’clock that night. As a guest award presenter, Emma was to walk down the red carpet with the famous artist Mark Whitaker, who was also one of the judges.
Hearing Lisa mention his name, Emma immediately remembered meeting the sleazy middle-aged man at the Bright Night Gala. “Mark Whitaker,” she thought. “Why does it have to be him?”
Lisa continued to chatter on about the schedule for the awards ceremony. However, Emma felt uneasy. “Lisa,” she said, “can you help me prepare a hidden camera?”
“Hidden camera? I don’t have anything like that, but I do have a voice recording brooch,” Lisa replied.
“Why? I don’t think Mark has good intentions,” Emma replied. “I’ve heard some bad rumors about him from others in the industry. The fact that he and I are walking in together might not be a coincidence. I need to be wary of it.”
Lisa understood. “Okay, I’ll help you prepare it in a moment.” Suddenly, she grabbed the back of her head in frustration. “Emma, you deserve a more capable and thoughtful assistant than me,” she said. “I’ve realized all I can do is ride your coattails. You’ve been very good to me these past few years.”
Emma replied, “I don’t need anyone else. There’s no harm in having a smart support team,” Emma thought. “But there’s no guarantee someone else would be as loyal to me as Lisa is.” She knew Lisa was just right for her. All she needed now was a capable manager to take over the work Eric had been doing. She didn’t want Eric to be so hands-on with her career. It was too tiring for him.
The two women looked at each other and smiled. They understood each other. A moment later, Lisa received a phone call from Luke, who told her to look at the entertainment news. Lisa was slightly confused, but then she turned on the TV and saw a spirited-looking Amber giving an interview to the media.
Headlines scrolled across the bottom of the screen as she spoke. “Amber Lee has signed on with a new agency, ending her relationship with Global Exposed Creative. Centuries newly signed artist is Amber, not Emma.”
As Emma and Lisa read these headlines, one thing became clear to them: Nathan and Amber had split. Lisa shook the remote control in her hand. “Huh, Amber must be feeling pretty proud again. Let’s see if she’ll still be proud after tonight,” Emma said.
She watched as Amber took questions from the eager reporters. “I lost my patience and sympathy for her a long time ago,” she thought. “Now that I think about it, she’s quite pitiful,” Lisa said. “Right after she signs on with the new company, she’s going to fall from grace.”
Emma smirked. She knew Amber had been quick to make her announcement because she feared something bad would happen if she waited too long.
The child in her stomach was a ticking time bomb. Emma also knew there was no way Nathan would allow Amber to leave him so easily.
Amber smiled at the camera. “Right now, I want to thank two people. The first is the CEO of Global Pictures, Nathan Davis, who helped me and protected me during my time at his agency. The second person is my colleague, Emma Miller. Without you, there would be no me,” Amber spoke.
The artistic director from Creative Century stepped out in front of the microphones. “Miss Lee is the only artist Creative Century was seeking for its team,” she said. “We apologize for any rumors that suggested otherwise. As for the fake news reports, I’d like to ask the media to do a better job distinguishing between lies and the truth. Lastly, we are pleased to welcome Amber to the Creative Century family.”
Of course, the rumors she was referring to were about Creative Century trying to scout Emma. Since Emma was currently being suffocated by scandals and hadn’t been nominated for an award, Creative Century was taking advantage of the situation to clear its name of rumors about her. “They’re so shameless,” Lisa said. “Have the people at Creative Century forgotten about the documents they emailed you? These people are all pouncing on the opportunity to clear their names just because you’re facing a small problem. What about Amber? She’s had so many scandals, yet they’re still willing to take her. They think that once Amber gets her award, all the scandals will be easy to cover up.”
Emma said, “In the entertainment industry, there’s no definite right and wrong.” She glared at the smile that was flashing across Amber’s face as she answered the reporter’s questions with poise. “She doesn’t care if she’s shameless,” Emma thought, “as long as she keeps getting ahead.”
“Miss Lee,” a reporter called out, “did the gratitude you just showed Miss Miller truly come from your heart?”
“Miss Lee, everyone knows there’s a lot of competition between you and Miss Miller. What do you think will be in store for the two of you in the future?” The people from Creative Century glanced over at Amber, reminding her to think before speaking. If the artistic director hadn’t spoken up earlier to distract the media, Amber would have already gotten herself in trouble.
Amber was stunned for a moment before smiling and saying, “I’m Amber Lee. I’m not good with words. May I please ask the media to stop making it difficult for me?” Basically, she was trying to say that Emma’s words were just a beautiful facade. However, Emma didn’t face the media often as she was usually busy working or trying her best to avoid them. But those who loved to spread rumors held on to Amber’s point and claimed that Emma wasn’t sincere. On the other hand, they found Amber quite lovable for being so frank.
“So, does that mean you’re no longer standing between Nathan and Emma?” a reporter asked. “Do you think they’ll reconcile? Is that why Emma won’t leave Global? Has she been trying to get back with Nathan?”
“This, you’ll need to ask Emma yourself,” Amber replied. The media assumed that in saying this, Amber was implying that Emma still loved Nathan and wanted to get back with him. More importantly, the media assumed that the reason Amber left Global was because Emma’s extreme revenge tactics had forced her out. In an instant, Emma had gone from being a pure and innocent artist to someone who was dishonest and sinister. It was like the words from Amber and Creative Century were all attacks on Emma, confirming her ruthlessness to the public.
Emma stopped watching the interview. After all, to her, it was the same nonsense she’d already heard. Lisa looked at Emma’s expression and realized there was great tolerance and wisdom in her eyes. “Emma likes to be in this position,” she thought. “She likes staying silent for a while before striking a fatal blow to her enemy. If Amber was trying to defeat her with this, she’s still miles from succeeding.”
“We should get ready,” Lisa said, looking at her wristwatch. “It’s almost time for the awards ceremony. Don’t worry, the evidence and people you need to expose Amber for not qualifying for the award are ready. All you have to do is relax and watch the show, Emma. All that you’ve suffered, we’re about to make Amber pay it back all at once.”
