“Oh, Trudy, you’re too much.” I manage to avoid her grasp, just, as I go toward Olivia’s office.

The blinds are drawn, which is unusual for her. When Olivia’s in her office, she’s the open-door type. Anyone can stop in to ask a question or say hello. So, her needing privacy is…different.

However, when I approach the door, I can tell it hasn’t been shut all the way. Probably an oversight.

Inside, she is talking to someone with an urgency in her voice I had never heard before. Something is wrong.

“I gave you double last month because I could, not because that’s going to be the norm.” Her voice trembles.

I peek in through the crack in the door and spot her at the desk, her head resting in her hand, office phone pressed to her ear. Her crisp, slicked-back bun has tumbled completely out of control, reminding me of the night I met her. Long ribbons of dark hair. Gorgeous.

“Well, I can’t get you that much this month. I just can’t… I know the interest is accruing, I’m well aware.”

My heart sinks. So, she’s got some debts to pay. I wonder what for.

“You’re going to have to be happy with what I already wired you. That’s all there is this month.”

From the sounds of it, this isn’t normal debt. Sounds like she’s dealing with something much seedier than that.

Debt collectors can annoy you with phone calls and by mail. But unregulated debt…who knows what lengths these people are willing to go to get her to pay up.

“Fine. Fine…” She scribbles something on a notepad. “Yes. I got it all down. Mhm.” Her voice pitches higher and higher. “Thank you for-” She stops short, pulls the phone away from her ear, and looks at the receiver. With a heavy sigh, she hangs up the phone and droops over herself.

Seconds later, she’s crying.

I feel like a creep watching her, just like I always seem to do. But I can’t just let her sit there and cry.

She must feel so alone.

And I can’t stand the thought of that. Not when she’s such a wonderful human.

I rap on the door.

Olivia’s head shoots up, tears staining her cheeks, and when our eyes meet, she flushes even harder. “Oh, my god, Dylan-“

“Sorry, I don’t mean to interrupt.”

Yeah, right.

“Are you alright?”

Olivia looks at the phone, then back at me. She tries to speak, but all that comes out is a sob.

I go to her without thinking, get to my knees, wrap my arms around her, and pull her down into my chest as tight as I can.

Olivia cries into my neck.

All her emotions quake through my body. “Shhh…it’s alright. Everything will be alright.”

I might not know the details of her circumstances. But I know it will all be alright. Because as long as I’m around, I’ll never let anything bad happen to Olivia. It’s something coded into the back of my brain ever since I saw her at the masquerade ball. Before I even knew her name.

I must keep her safe. I must keep her from harm.

Because even if I never have her, whether it be in my bed or somewhere deeper and more intimate, Olivia will always be mine in some way.

I can’t explain why. I just know.

“How much-” She hiccups. “How much did you hear?”

I push away a tear that escapes her eye, racing to reach her chin at a breakneck speed. “Just the tail end there.”

Olivia shuts her eyes tight.

It kills me to have her closing away from me. “Don’t be embarrassed.”

“I shouldn’t have been making a personal call at work, I’m sorry.”

I shake my head. “Olivia, please don’t apologize. You have nothing…” I cup the sides of her face to make sure she looks at me and the message gets across. “You have nothing to apologize for.”

Olivia’s eyes tremble in mine. She swallows. Hard.

I wonder if she’s feeling what I’m feeling now. The brutal, almost irresistible urge to have my lips on hers. But I resist. It wouldn’t be professional. I’d be taking advantage of her in a time of vulnerability.

Still, though, I won’t let that take me away from her.

“You have debt.”

Olivia nods. Her hands grip at my suit jacket, fingers digging into my sides. Almost like she needs me. “I do.”

“Let me take care of them.”

“No.” Her hands grip tighter.

“I want to.”

Olivia is silent, shaking her head nonstop. Her brow bends. She’s…considering it. But then she stops. “It’s my responsibility. I can’t let you. Then I’d feel indebted to you and-“

I slide one hand to the nape of her neck. “You would never owe me anything, Olivia. I promise.”

We are both quiet, the thrumming of a heartbeat punctuating the silence. Mine? Hers?

“I just…” I can’t manage my surly exterior much longer. It’s something I’ve postured for my entire life. But beneath it all, I am soft. I just want to be loved.

And I want it to be Olivia. “I want to take care of you.”

It’s Olivia who tips forward first. I’m close to a hundred percent sure. I have to be in order not to feel like I’ve somehow taken advantage of this closeness.

But when her mouth touches mine, my body lights up like fireworks on New Year’s Eve.

Her lips are poised and controlled.

Someone has to be. Because all I want to do is rip our clothes off and do what has needed to be done since the very first night we met.

My hands wander down to her back, pressing her full body into me as our lips caress one another’s.

The tension we have been building has been exquisite, but I am so ready for it all to end, right here, right now.

I will take her. With the door open. Where everyone can hear how good I can make her feel.

Olivia rips her lips away from mine before I can carry out my plan. Maybe for the best. Would have been unprofessional.

But holy hell, how my insides curdle without her mouth on mine.

“I’m sorry.” Her whisper is so soft.

I want to tell her how not sorry she has to be. However, all that comes out is a mere, “It’s alright.”

It sounds like I’m accepting her apology, but what I mean is that it was more than alright for her to kiss me. In fact, I’d like her to do it again.

“I just got-” She falls back onto her heels, leaving my embrace-a painful, cold feeling-and laughs despite herself. “I just got carried away and you’re so kind and-“

“It’s alright, Olivia,” I repeat, hoping the way I say her name will make it all clear.

I’ve never been the best at words. Never been the best at actions either. Perhaps I’m not meant for anything if I can’t accomplish one or the other.

She wipes away the sticky tracks of tears with the back of her hand. “I really hope this won’t change-“

“I don’t see you any differently.” Which is true. I see her just as I did before. Someone I want with a primal need I can’t seem to tame. “I’m sorry if I…made you uncomfortable.”

Olivia shakes her head. “No, no, not at all. I feel…”

I suck in a breath. The pause in her answer almost kills me with anticipation. Her answer means the world to me.

“Safe around you, Dylan. Seriously.”

Safe. I make her feel safe.

On the one hand, that’s a good thing. On the other, makes me feel a bit like I’m her dad. And that’s a great reminder that she’s the same age as my eldest son. She works under me, and I need to be a leader for her. Not someone kissing her when she cries and thinking about fucking her on the floor of her office without any sense of decorum.

She pushes herself back up into her chair. “Don’t worry about me.”
