Dammit. It’s not going to be that easy, is it?

DYLAN POV

A month of Olivia. And I’ve somehow managed to keep myself from going feral on her. I would say that’s an accomplishment considering how my blood simmers any time she’s near.

That’s why I stay away, for the most part.

However, since the incident with Oliver Worthington, I have been on high alert. I’ll be damned if anyone is going to fuck with Olivia.

She’s the best manager we’ve ever had.

And also, she’s mine.

I know I can’t have her, but she makes all my instincts flare. I can’t look at her without the word “mine” blaring at me.

That knowing feeling that we belong to each other is so rooted inside me that I have a hard time fighting it twenty-four-seven.

Even if I much prefer to spend my Saturdays out of the fray, I have to come in today because it was the only available time I had to meet a prospective new member who might fill Oliver Worthington’s spot.

We’ve already gone through the vetting and interviewing with him; he seems to be a perfect candidate. Now, he just has to come in and tour the facilities, and according to tradition, that’s up to me. And since I grew up breathing this place, who better to do the honors than the owner himself?

I find Marty Villanueva in front of the member’s-only entrance.

He is squinting his eyes at the door, trying to figure it out.

I hold back a laugh. “Villanueva!”

“Ah! Hill!”

We shake hands.

His smile is open and honest. “Thanks for meeting me today.”

“Of course. I see you’re trying to figure out our door, huh?” I ask.

Villanueva laughs. “I am. No handle, no lock-“

“No obvious lock.” I wave my smartwatch over a hidden indent on the wall. After a clicking sound, the door slides open. “Every member gets access via their phone or smartwatch.”

“That’s very James Bond of you!” Villanueva laughs.

“Indeed.” I chuckle. “Come on in, let me show you around.”

Marty and I enter the club, chatting away.

He’s an affable guy, been on the waitlist for membership for about five years.

Since he first signed up, he’s gained about thirty pounds and expanded his manufacturing business across the Atlantic Ocean. Impressive stuff, making him a great candidate for the Hill Club.

I can tell he’s impressed from the way he appraises each of the facilities, smile growing larger and larger.

We get to the wine cellar, and his eyes light up. “My wife will like this.”

“Do you have any children? They’ll be grandfathered in once they’re of age.”

“Well, the twins are three right now, so-“

“Ah! You’ve got some time, then.”

Marty grins. “Do you have children?”

“Three. Two boys and a girl. Grown.”

My heart swells.

I didn’t always get this feeling when talking about my kids. Honestly, there was a time when they were a distraction to me. I regret ever feeling that way and I’d never, ever admit it. What kind of father thinks that about their children?

“Grown? You don’t look a day over forty!” Marty slaps me on the back.

It’s unusual for men in my position to have children as young as I did. Most of them wait until they’re in their forties, marry a twenty-something, and call it a day. I’ve never been one to follow trends, though. “Add another ten, and you’re right on the money.”

“What?! No.”

“The gray didn’t give it away?” I brush my fingers through my sideburns.

“Makes you look sophisticated, not old.”

We continue our small talk through the rest of the tour, though the conversation about our children has me feeling bruised.

Any time my mind crosses Nate for just a moment, even if he’s not brought up by name, creates a fog around me that I can’t see past.

Still no word from my son.

Jack and Abigail are trying their best. So are Mason and Seth. Haven’t managed to get through to him, though.

I’d love to speak to him before three years turns into four.

“Well, I’ve got to hand it to you, Hill. This place is fucking incredible.”

Fuck yes.

I know this place is incredible, but it never loses its luster hearing other people think it’s amazing too. “Can I welcome you to the club yet?”

“Let’s not get ahead of ourselves, Hill.” Villanueva holds up his hands. “I want to get a handle on how your staff feels about this place.”

I raise an eyebrow. “Sorry?”

“Look, the facilities are all well and good, but…I’m not going to be participating in a club that takes advantage of the little people. You understand?”

It takes a bit of effort, but I keep up my friendly, understanding smile.

On the one hand, I take offense that he’d think I might do that. That’s not what Hill Club is about. At all.

But on the other hand, I wouldn’t want him anywhere near us if the coin were flipped.

“Of course. Well…” I glance around. “Let me give you audience with our sommelier since you mentioned your wife loves wine. And-” Olivia pops into my head.

Oh, yeah. She’ll do just fine.

“I’ll get our operations manager for you. She manages the day-to-day, and she’ll be able to give it to you straight about how it is behind the scenes here.”

“Fantastic, that works for me.”

“Excellent.” I look over to the wall of windows.

Olivia isn’t at her desk. She could be anywhere.

Fuck.

I wave our sommelier over.

He has just delivered a round of wine to a group of members hosting an impromptu chess tournament, so he should be free for a couple of minutes. He wafts over to us.

I introduce the two of them and he engages Villanueva in a conversation about a specific provincial Italian grape.

I don’t have time for this. I need to find Olivia and clinch the deal.

Touching the sommelier’s arm, I keep glancing around, hoping to spot my operations manager. “Have you seen Olivia, by the way?”

He squints, thinking way too hard about this question. “I think she was working on a complaint about the sauna.”

“Great, thanks.” I leave them to their dry wine talk-no pun intended-and head through the door to the exercise wing.

Chlorine hits my nose as I walk down the long hall to the open dome of the pool where some members are doing laps and others are enjoying the hot tub.

However, my eyes gravitate toward the sauna door that is halfway propped open.

I stride over and poke my head in.

The sauna is not even close to as hot as it should be.
