“Thought I would see you soon. I don’t know, and I miss her terribly,” Scones said, before I had even spoken.

“You don’t know what?”

“Why did she leave? I know she’s in the nurse’s place, but I don’t know why she left the club, us, me. Here’s her new phone number. I saw her in town yesterday, near the park, and said I could give it to you. If you are interested in dating, she is not ready for more.”

“What happened, I mean, in the past?” I pushed, sitting at the table, and eating a bowl of soup, Scones had handed to me.

“Not my story to tell, and it’s not pretty. She’s still dealing with it; I guess you could say she was running when she met you, and is still running, in a way. I worry she might be in danger, but she doesn’t see it.”

Scones wouldn’t give me facts or names, but I feel it was something to do with her ex and all those text messages she had been getting.

“Contact her, take it slowly, date her. I know that’s a foreign concept for you, but if you want that girl, you’ve got to do it the old-fashioned way, not the caveman way. But with flowers, and opening doors for her, and that type of old-fashioned thing, treat her like she’s worth something.” This was going to be different. I have never pursued a woman; they have always chased me,

While heading into town, I thought about what I would say to Cora. I couldn’t stay long. We have yet to discuss what happened out on the run and what we want to do moving forward. But I feel I need to see Cora and hold her before that meeting, or I will burst.

I reached the place Bluey said Cora was staying, pulled out my phone, and dialed the new number. “Hello?” Cora’s sweet voice came over the phone, and my shaft was already hardening just from her voice.

“It’s me,” I replied, and what I said sounded lacking.

“Oh, do you want to come in?” I heard the click of the gate, and it slid open. I quickly started my bike and headed in, hoping she would come out to find me, as I had no idea which room she was in. I rode, slowly my head swiveling back and forth, hunting for Cora, and then there she was.

Standing at the back of one of the buildings, near the back of the complex, waving to gain my attention. I turned and moved towards her. She waited as I approached, kicked the side stand down, and switched off the bike. All this felt like it was taking forever, but it would have only been moments. I removed my lid, placed it on the bike’s mirror, and climbed off, my eyes never leaving her face, afraid she would disappear on me.

“How was the ride? You have been gone a while. Hope you had nice places to camp in.” She didn’t assume we had motels. I was glad of that. What little Cora knew of our life, one thing she did know was that I loved to camp out under the stars and enjoy the view of the stars in the sky, billions of them, reminding me that our world was only one of many. It grounds me, keeping me from thinking I was more important than I was. ‘The world doesn’t stop revolving just because I am on the earth. Profound, I know, but it’s what my Dad would say. He would put me down every time he could, but in this, he was right. The world doesn’t stop because of me, and it didn’t stop because of him either. That was what kept me going over the years after he died: he wasn’t enough to stop the world, regardless of how mighty he thought he was.

I reached Cora, hesitated for a fraction of a second, then reached out, pulled her over me, and kissed her like a hungry, thirsty man who needed water and food. I pushed my tongue on her lips, asking for entrance, which she gave me with a gasp, and I continued to kiss her, only breaking the kiss when a woman’s voice broke the moment.

“Go to your room and do that.” She shouted out. I raised my eyes to look at the woman, not breaking the kiss, and she gasped, put her hand over her mouth and fanned her face with the other hand.

“Better get you inside before that woman calls the building manager.” I didn’t know if the woman would or not, but I didn’t mind taking this inside.

Cora led me to a side door and let me in. I stepped into an open-plan unit, and the lounge and kitchen were in the main room, All the little touches that make this place a home were here, the things that made my room a home while she lived with me, and I want that again.

“Coffee?”

“I can’t stay, we have a meeting, but I had to see you, find out where you were, and see if I can come visit you when you’re not working. I miss you.” It was true, every word.

“I still have another week off, if you want to come visit. You have my new number.”

“I’d like that, we have a lot to talk about, like why you left me. But I can’t do that now, I have to go. I will be back in a couple of hours. I will text you if it’s going to be longer. Want me to bring a takeaway for dinner?” “Sure.” I kissed her again before leaving her. It was not long enough, but it was better than nothing at all.

Cora POV

Today, I was going to fast walk in the park and see how far I could go. I was thinking about days when I can, once I start work, go to the park as often as I can. I need some exercise, I need to get this thigh working again. I haven’t found a gym yet, but there must be one close by. I was going to check on the internet, but then changed my mind, thinking I needed to do some fast walking, then maybe running and see how I go that way first. Before starting weights and a heavier workout, my thigh still twinges, it’s too soon.

It was okay, but I was feeling lonely. It would be nice to walk, run, or be with someone. The last two weeks with Gunner had hardly been alone, and I liked that feeling, even after he left to go on the bike ride, to who knows where and why it was all in secret. I had Scones, Bluey, and other girls around me, keeping me company. I hardly had a moment to myself, and I hadn’t realised how much I had enjoyed having their company. They were fun, made me laugh more than I had in years, and I felt included.

A new phone needed. I had had enough of all these text messages coming in; even blocking them didn’t work because they kept using different phones. It was very trying; they were not getting the message. I don’t want anything to do with them.

Another turn around the park, and I saw Scones.

“Hey, Scone

I greeted her with a hug. It was wonderful to see her; out of all the ladies, she was the one I missed the most.

“How are you? I miss you. The club lads miss your cooking.” I burst out laughing because that was the last thing I expected to hear coming out of her mouth, being the club cook. We talked for a while, and I gave her my new number.

“Good, I wanted to suggest getting a new phone number. They didn’t sound like they would give up on chasing you anytime soon.” I agreed with Scones; they were relentless. I watched her leave and wished I could be with her. I had never been lonely before, always so busy, either with work or study.

Maybe that’s why I lost my boyfriend and best friend, because I was too busy with my life, and trusting that their slow move away from me was all my doing?

Was it?

Did I push them towards each other?

No, don’t take the blame for their actions.

I didn’t do anything wrong.
