A man in his fifties, who had eaten or drunk too much over the years, as he looked about ten months pregnant, greeted me with a fake smile and greedy eyes. I didn’t like this place already.
“How can we be of service?”
“Is the manager about?” I asked if he was like that slimy guy; I wasn’t banking on it.
“He will be here in about an hour. Would you like to book an appointment?”
“Why isn’t he here when the branch opens?”
“That I can’t answer, it’s not my place.”
“Hmm, I will come back later.” I left the man standing there shocked, and out the door. The town has two branches. I will head over there and check that one out. I will have to get my car.
The other branch was nicer and more polite, and the manager was at least in attendance.
I explained what the other branch was like, and I was not impressed that the band manager was not there. The man was polite and didn’t make excuses. I liked this branch much better, and organised to bring my account to this one, for now.
“I don’t have a permanent place to live. I will update that once I have one. I was thinking of buying a house, r but I’m new in town, so I will take my time finding one I like.”
“We would be only too happy to assist you in any transaction you need, and thank you for choosing our branch.”
“Is there a competition or something between the branches?” I asked because something was not right. “You could say that we don’t need two branches, and we are competing for business to be the one the company keeps. Your account just might have tipped the balance in his favour, being such a large one.”
“I would like online access too, please.”
By the time I had left the bank, I felt like I was royalty. Compared to the other branch, it would have been a pity for this one to have closed.
Gunner POV
The ride home was fast; we had a lot to talk about, discuss, and sort out when we got home. Someone was trying to upset us, and we didn’t know who or why. With the police now involved, a few things changed, and our personal investigation would need to be done with more care, which meant those three in our cells wouldn’t be getting out any time soon, not that we had intended to let them go. They weren’t to be trusted, and that shooter, with no care about what he shot, was trouble for everyone. Hired thugs are dangerous.
We got home early in the morning, all tired and wanting bed.
Entering my room, I knew something was wrong.
I had been gone four days and had been looking forward to cuddling up to Cora’s warm body.
The bed was empty.
I turned on the light and went still; all her belongings were gone.
Where the fuk was she?
Did she wait till I was gone to leave?
I stripped off and climbed into bed, too tired to try and find her now, and those who might know are asleep, and it wouldn’t be right to wake them because I had lost my woman. They might find it funny, and Oddball would tear me apart, nope, in the morning.
It was just after lunchtime when I woke up. It was a fitful sleep. I was missing Cora more than I want to admit.
Holding her had helped me sleep, her body warmth, her perfume, the feeling of having someone I wanted with me, close to me.
I showered and headed downstairs in search of answers.
Bluey cornered me as I reached the bottom step.
“She’s moved into the nurses’ quarters in town, said you paid your dues, caring for her while she got better, and time to forgive, and forget, and get on with your life. She doesn’t want to be your burden any longer than she has to be. Got the all clear from Scrubs, and she packed up and left. The only one she spoke to before leaving was Scones. Poor woman has been inundated with club members wondering what she had gone.”
“Cora was never a burden.”
“Tread carefully; that girl has gone through some big hurts. Talk to Scones; she knows more. You go racing to her, like a caveman, and you will lose her forever.”
“When did she move out?”
“Two days ago,” I nodded. At least it wasn’t the day I left, that would have made me angrier, like she was running away from me.
“Thanks.” I needed to talk to Scones to see if she was the only person Cora talked to before leaving.
Scones are in the kitchen, right where she always was, is, whatever.
