“Gunner only said I was in his room so he could look after me while I healed. I have the all-clear, so I don’t need to be here any longer. Gunner’s gone on a ride somewhere. Say bye for me when he returns.”

“He’s not going to be happy, you left without a goodbye.”

“He’s the one who rode off yesterday, with the guys, with no return date. I am not going to hang around waiting on him to decide my life; it’s mine to live.” Scones walked me to my car, saying goodbye to those l passed that I liked, all saying the same thing, ‘Does Gunner know?’ He’s not here, so that’s a no. I waved at the guards at the gate, who didn’t appear to be happy to see me driving away, but couldn’t stop me from going.

It felt sad to be leaving. I did have a good time, not at first, because Gunner was so pushy, demanding I do things his way. I am not an easy pushover. I might have trusted too easily in the past, and that still hurts like hell when I think about it, how they pulled the wool over my eyes for so long, well, not anymore, I don’t trust anyone with my heart, not any more.

I pulled up at my new home. I was renting a one-bedroom unit at this house. It was a small bungalow out the back, fully contained, and five minutes from the hospital. I can walk there from here. They have six small bungalows on this property, all rented on a short-term basis, for medical staff who don’t want to live in the hospital-supplied nurses’ and doctors’ quarters. But in my case, there were no rooms available, so they suggested this place, subsidised by the hospital.

It took me an hour to unload my car and unpack, making this empty place a home. I needed to get to the shops and fill the fridge; everything else was supplied, pots, pans, linen, everything, all courtesy of the hospital. I think they own this property, but I wasn’t going to dig into it further. My new home was a gated complex, which helped make me feel a little safer.

I didn’t need to take my car for the shopping, I had a small wheeled shopping trolley, which I pulled along and filled with my groceries. all done in less than an hour, I met new faces that welcomed me to the area, and I felt like I was starting a new life at last, rather than the limbo and great s.ex I had an experience at the clubhouse. My life felt like it had stopped moving forward while I healed, and I am grateful for that break, but it was time to address my issues, like the latest loss of messages from Dad, stepbrother and some unknown numbers, that I assumed were my ex-best friend and ex-boyfriend.

Coffee and a homemade burger, I sat out back on the porch, watching the sun go down, as I ate my dinner, and waited for the sun to dip below the horizon. The night noises began. Before I looked at my phone and started answering them, the last message I sent them, saying ‘don’t bother contacting me again, had gone unheeded, and my inbox was filled with more unread messages.

I started with my ex-boyfriend. He was on an unknown number; I don’t know whether it was a new phone or someone else’s. He was full of apologies, or it was the first time, which I know it wasn’t. I am no longer a person who believed the dribble that was vomited out of his mouth. He was begging for me to come back to him and promising me all sorts of things. I blocked that number; he will find another number soon enough.

Next was my ex-best friend, she was almost parroting the same as my ex, but she added, “You’re my best friend, we have been together all our lives, surely we can get past this, and get back to being friends again. Yeah, right, that’s no, and I blocked that number.

I felt drained from reading all those messages and decided to call it a night. Tomorrow was a new day, and I will address the family messages then.

Gunner POV

“Time.” We had been gone all day and won’t be making it home tonight. don’t like leaving Cora alone for so long. I was tempted to call or text her to ask how her day went, but each time I considered it, I froze up, unsure how to word it.

How would she take it if I texted her, and would she answer?

I know she was still getting messages from her exes and family, that she hadn’t responded to.

Would my text go unanswered, thinking it was her family?

I hadn’t given her my number, so she would know that the unknown number was me. I had berated myself a few times for not exchanging numbers. I knew hers because of the paperwork she filled out with Bluey for payroll and her hospital ID.

We rode till midnight, before pulling into a motel, and taking it over, we had fifteen men, and we had to double up in rooms, not that we were worried bunking with mates, we had done it often enough. I have my bedroll on the back of the bike, in case we decide to camp out in the open. I would have preferred to do that, no paper trail of where we had been.

We had travelled fast, to catch a man we didn’t know, who had put the contract out on us; apparently, they didn’t care who was hurt or killed as long as it was an officer. Back home in the cells, we still have the shooter, Stacks, and Kit, all of whom we believe are part of this. They will stay in the cells till we are either satisfied all has been revealed, or they are dead.

The man wasn’t where he should have been, but we are following his paper trail and should reach him tomorrow. I was hoping this wasn’t a trap. So far from home, it could be disastrous. No backup out here. I tossed and turned all night; the floor was uncomfortable, the bed too soft, and I was missing a little somebody’s warm body.

In a bad mood, I showered, ate and climbed on my bike; the roar of our combined bikes and the vibration of mine through my body brought me out of my funk. Soon, I had the wind in my face and bugs being caught in my beard, and the sun rising at my back, and in two hours, we would know if this was a wild, good chase or something else.

This was beautiful countryside, with lots of winding roads, making the ride even more pleasurable. I like testing myself on corners, I guess, I will try something too tight and end up losing some bark to the road. Bark, meaning my skin. Birds are high in the sky, floating on the thermal currents. They may be too high for hunting, but I’m basing this on what I can see, and they have far better sight than I do, so maybe not too high.

It’s peaceful, even my mind is calm, as I enjoy the ride, which was taking my mind off other problems. Normally, a ride clears my mind and helps me think, but today it was not to sort out a problem with.

Numerous scenarios because there were too many variables; it was just to ride and enjoy, and let the president make all the decisions.

I was riding at the back, not my usual place to ride, but with these guys, I felt better sitting at the back, letting those younger idiots do silly things in the middle, and I watched, amused, because I was never that reckless. Don’t get me wrong, I have done some questionable things, wheel stands, and the thing you expect when testing your bike’s limits when I was younger. But these guys do things I wouldn’t have thought of.

Like Carnage, he would ride by close, too close and lean over, hitting your kill switch. The rider’s bike would suddenly lose all its power, and depending on how switched on the rider is, it would end up. He likes to stand on his bike and greet the sky at a hundred miles an hour, madness if you ask me, or lie on the tank with his feet on the back pegs, and take sharp corners like that. I love my bike too much to take silly risks. I already take more than I should, but not like that. I am not nor have ever been a prankster, not on a bike. But I don’t mind watching them be stupid and dream up new ways to be a total idiot; it’s quite entertaining.

Lunch was stopped at a small diner, parking out the back, away from the crowd, and leaving the front for the truckies and other larger vehicles. I found a tree to rest under and enjoy my sandwich and coffee. While sitting there, watching the passing cars and people, I thought I saw the man we were after.

“Oddball, did you see?” Oddball was sharing this tree with me.

“Yes.” A quick whistle had the team look at him, and he signalled that he wanted to do down. My job was to reach his vehicle and prevent him from leaving. That was easier than I had expected. The idiot didn’t lock his car; most likely, he thought it was safe out here, in the middle of nowhere. I popped his bonnet, removed his power cable from his battery, and closed it. He was going nowhere fast, which should give us time to take him on.

I brought my bike around the front and topped up the tank, not that it needed it yet, but I wanted to see what was going on through the front window. Finished fueling, and went to pay, grabbed a snack and a bottle of water, while I was there, all looking normal and casual Oddball and Carnage were seated at his table, talking to him. He looked nervous, looking around the diner. I get the feeling he was looking for someone, that he was more afraid of than us. I texted Oddball my thoughts and waited. Oddball looked at his phone and, after a few more works, moved away, leaving the guy alone, for now. We melted into the trees, keeping out of sight, and waited. My gut said something was going to go down, and this guy wasn’t the endgame.

The guy came out of the diner, looking around, before moving to his car. He was two steps away from climbing in, and a sniper shot him through the eye; he dropped like a stone in the water. A woman nearby screamed, and it wouldn’t be long, and the cops would be here. We decided to grab a coffee and wait; we didn’t run from the cops, when we did nothing wrong. I was glad I had my gloves on when I tampered with his car, and this place didn’t have security cameras on the outside pointing in that direction, which tells me this was all arranged, us getting here, him being the bait, and my gut that had been gnawing at me since we left was just proved right again.

The cops arrived in less than five minutes, quicker than I had expected, for a small town. They got to work un the man on the floor. Another police car arrived, and they started getting statements from those still here. We were eventually approached, and it was good that these men were polite and did not accuse us of being involved. It was a nice change. But most of the diners would be able to say that we never did anything to the man, and the couple that was at the table next to where the guy sat could say that Oddball greeted him in a friendly manner, and left shaking hands, not the sort of meet and greet of angry people.

Oddball gave a statement on our behalf, and we were let go. None of us was carrying, and thankfully,

Lobster was nearly always in possession of weed, something he enjoys smoking when out on a ride. This was a business ride, so no weed was allowed. Weed was about the only drug on our property that Oddball tolerates. If you get into harder drugs, he gives the person an option: give up the drugs, or leave the club, and if they stay, they get drug tested once a week, on random days. We don’t want or need drugs in our place.

It was time to ride home and talk about what just went down.
