Who watched it, then handed the phone to Dozer, and then on to me.
“Thank you, Donk. I have forwarded that to my phone. Hope you don’t mind.”
“Can I go now?”
“Yes, sorry about this, but we had to be sure, and please don’t mention this to anyone. I don’t want to tip off Stacks or anyone else involved.” Oddball shook his hand.
“He organised the shooting, didn’t he?”
“What makes you say that?”
“He didn’t want to go on a quick run when, normally he’s one of the first to put his hand up, and then, while you guys were gone, he said something about how things are about to change around here. I have no clue what he was talking about, and then the shooting, and that woman arriving. I wasn’t sure if he was talking about the shooting or whether you had gone to pick up a chick. I didn’t ask; he was drunk and slurring nonsense.”
“We believe he was involved. Keep your ear out, if you hear anything at all, I want to know about it, even if it was a joke, that sounded odd, or an offhand comment.” We let Donk go, hoping he keeps his mouth shut.
“Go spend time with your girl. I know you’re itching to do so. We have guys out looking for Stacks. He was due to come to work in an hour, but I want them to find him and follow him, ensure he makes it to us.”
Cora was still in the office with Bluey.
“Hey, Bluey, aren’t you going to be late for work?”
Bluey looked up in shock, then at her phone for a few seconds, I assumed to the time and a few words ladies shouldn’t use and raced out the door.
“Thanks, talk about information overload, that woman wanted me to learn everything in one day.” Cora slumped back in the chair after saving the work on the laptop.
Cora POV
Removed my joggers and placed them by the chair, then removed my trackpants and folded them carefully, placing them on the chair. The paper covering the examination table rustled as I climbed on and lay on my stomach. The table was cold on my stomach. The smell of antiseptic was strong in the room. Scrubs must have been busy this morning; possibly a small scuffle and some TLC were needed.
Today marks ten days, and it was time for the stitches to be removed. I no longer use the crutches, but that doesn’t seem to stop Gunner from finding any excuse he can to hold me or carry me around. Not that I mind getting all that attention. Gunner has been a balm to my bruised heart and has helped keep my mind off what happened, leading me to end up where I am now.
Mind you, I have felt more seen, treasured, wanted, and loved since I came here than ever in my life. Not since my mother died have I felt at peace and relaxed. I have laughed more in these ten days than I had in months, maybe longer.
Bluey was happy with my work on her laptop, generating reports and updating the protocols and procedures, which needed to be updated because laws change, and paperwork was nearly always the last to be updated. We were up to code now and would pass the upcoming annual audit.
My time in the kitchen has grown; they seem to enjoy the spices I add to the meals and the variety of dishes. Scones was a great cook, but got into a habit of the same routine. I have changed things up a bit, not intentionally, but it has been well-received.
“How’s the pain? Your legs healed well.” Scrubs asked as he finished up on my thigh, and I sat up.
“Manageable, hardly pains when I walk, maybe going up and down the stairs can make it ache, and if I am standing still for too long.”
“Light exercise, build it back up, you can go back to driving and work.” no excuse to
“Still have two weeks before I have to show up at work, might go look for a place to rent, my time living here is over.” No reason to be here now, Gunner’s job is done, I am back on my feet, he has keep me here now.
“Does Gunner know you intend to leave?” Scrubs asked as he watched me getting dressed.
“He said I was his responsibility to care for me, while I mend, well, I am mended, it’s time to leave.” I defend, trying to keep my voice polite.
“Our club will miss you. You have been a breath of fresh air for some of our stale men. Brought them to life again. I, for one, will miss you, Satay chicken strips.” I laughed, the easiest meal to make, all homemade, and they dive into it, each time I made it, requesting it as an option at most meals. I have shown Scones how to make it, and she has been trying to replicate it. Not quite right yet, but her last batch was much better, almost at the level to put on the table for others to try.
“Food was always a way into a man’s heart, you big softy.” I joked, prodding his flat, hard tummy.
“For me and some of the older guys, that maybe the case, the younger ones are still into spreading legs.” I laughed so hard, I almost peed my pants.
“You know how to make a woman swoon.” I giggled, trying to get myself under control.
I left the medical room and headed upstairs to start packing. It won’t take long. The last few days, I’ve been packing and taking the items to my car, placing them in the back and covering them up so it’s not so obvious. Although I have enjoyed my time here, it was over, I needed to get my life back on track, and this had been a lovely holiday.
The room was void of anything. I was glad I had left nothing behind and headed to the kitchen.
“Scones?” I called out, and she popped out of the large pantry.
“How did it go?”
“All clear, came to say, thank you, and good luck, time for me to move on,” I replied, moving to give her a warm hug.
“Oh, does Gunner know? I am going to miss you.” Scones patted me on the back, her eyes moist with unshed tears.
