“I’m sorry,” she said, her eyes pleading for him to accept her apology. “I really thought you were okay with swapping.”

He ushered her inside the bathroom and closed the door behind her. “I was okay with it.”

“Then what’s your problem?” She gave him a little push, but he didn’t budge. “Damn it, you made me feel so guilty.”

“You should. You left me out.”

She winced when she realized her mistake. “I’m sorry about that. But I needed to prove to Olivia and Ryan that I can take whatever Ryan dishes out.”

“Mmmhmm.” He wasn’t buying that excuse.

She draped her arms around his shoulders and curled into him, her breasts rubbing his chest. “I didn’t forget about you.”

He didn’t believe that. Jake disentangled himself from her arms and stepped into the shower. He tilted his head up and let the warm water course down him.

“I won’t leave you out again,” she said as she watched him. “I promise.”

“Okay.” He couldn’t fix the past, and the promise was all he could hope for. Jake reached for Mia and helped her into the shower.

She tilted her head up, allowing the water to spray on her hair and face. Mia brushed her mouth against his. “Let me make it up to you,” she offered in a purr.

“You will.” He would make certain of that.

Mia frowned at him as the water beat down her head. “What does that mean?”

“Since we’re swapping, you’ve already told me what Olivia wants. And I can tell that you want to retrain Ryan.”

She stepped away and lowered her arms. “How did you know that?”

“It’s obvious. To me,” he hurriedly assured her. “I doubt Ryan has a clue.”

“Whew.” Mia brushed her wet hair from her face and visibly relaxed.

“But no one asked what I want,” Jake emphasized.

Mia slowly closed her eyes and shook her head with regret. “I’ve really messed up with you, haven’t I?” she muttered.

“Not if you know how to fix it.” He’d like to see what she would do to make him happy.

“I’m sorry I was so focused on seeing what Olivia would get out of it. I came up with the idea for her. You know I’ll do anything to help her.”

“I know.” Mia didn’t have many friends or people she could rely on. In fact, it was probably just Olivia and him. Maybe Ryan. He wished Mia would show him the same care and loyalty she did to Olivia. Then again, Olivia and Mia had been friends for decades, while he’d known Mia for less than year.

“Tell me what you want from this swap,” Mia said.

“You can’t tell?” He wondered what her guess would be. He had a feeling she would be far off the mark.

Mia grimaced, knowing she was not scoring any brownie points with him. “No, I can’t. Why would you do it? You’ve swapped before, so it’s not a novelty.”

This was the best time to make his request. Mia wouldn’t deny him. He pressed his mouth against her ear and whispered, “I want to watch you and Olivia have sex.”

Mia’s shocked gasp ricocheted in the shower stall. She jerked back and stared at him. Her eyes were wide, and her mouth was parted in surprise.

She looked . . . vulnerable. He’d never seen Mia like this before. It was as if he had ripped away a veil and exposed her deepest secret.

He gathered her closely as the water streamed down his back. “Would you do it?”

She shook her head. “Olivia is never going to go for that.”

Jake noticed the way she avoided a direct answer. “But would you do it . . . if I asked?”

She closed her eyes and surrendered to the truth. “Yes . . . but don’t you want something else?” she urged. “Something where all the attention is on you?”

It was a tempting offer, but would she remember how she’d rocked his world? No, because she wouldn’t have risked anything to please him. Mia might carry along the memory of doing something raunchy or difficult, but as time went by, she’d be hazy on his name and face.

But years from now she would still think of her friend. She’d remember with vivid clarity how they’d spent their last days together, and he’d be a part of those memories.

“I’m all for sharing a bed with you and Olivia,” she said as he slicked his hands on Mia’s hips, “but I don’t think Olivia would go for that. Or Ryan.”

“You never know.” He smiled at the gleam in her eye. “You like the idea of having sex with Olivia, don’t you?”

Mia rested her head on his shoulder. “Yes.”

He wrapped his arms around her. “Don’t be shy about it.”

“You don’t understand,” she said, burrowing into him as if that way he wouldn’t see her face. “I can’t explain how I felt when I kissed her.”

“You’ve been with women before,” he reminded her.

Mia lifted her head. “Olivia doesn’t know that, okay?”

That surprised him. “I thought you two shared everything.”

“Almost everything,” she admitted. She reached up and wiped the water from her face.
