“Damn!” Mia said as she angrily threw down the controller. “Okay, what’s going on, Ryan? Have you been practicing secretly?”
“No,” he said with a smile, “but I’ve never had incentives like these before.”
“It’s your turn, Olivia,” Jake said as he handed her the controller.
Olivia accepted the controller and began hitting all of the buttons when the game started. She wasn’t going to win this game, and her mind was already on the next. She was still hitting the buttons as the scores came up on the screen. Mia’s voice pierced through her fog.
“Olivia won?” Mia said incredulously.
Olivia’s hands froze on the controller. “Say what?” That couldn’t be right. She was randomly hitting buttons without any strategy. Olivia squinted at the scoreboard on the screen.
“You won Jake,” Mia said.
How could that be? Ryan was better at this game. Both of the men were, which was why she and Mia had set up the game. The odds of losing to Jake were in her favor.
But now she had won Jake? That couldn’t be right. She wanted a recount! Olivia stared at Ryan and noticed the gleam in his eye.
She realized what had happened. The truth mushroomed inside her until it felt like it was going to burst through her skin. She might not have won him fair and square, but what was she going to do about it now? She would have preferred if Jake had won her. Olivia knew she wasn’t ready to give orders in front of an audience. What if Jake didn’t listen, or worse, what if he knew exactly what she wanted?
