Only then did I leave the bed.

The bathroom was quiet. Steam filled the air as I sat in the tub, trying to unwind. My body was still tight. My cock-still hard like it hadn’t gotten the message that we were done for the night.

I let my hand drift down. Started to jerk off, slowly . But the second I closed my eyes, I saw her face again-not the way she looked when she kissed me-but when she froze.

The fear in her eyes. That was it. I stopped. I didn’t want it anymore.

I didn’t want pleasure if it came with that image in my head. My body was still on fire, but my mind had shut down. What kind of man gets off while his mate’s curled up in pain across the room?

I sighed and leaned back, water sloshing over the side. My head rested on the edge of the tub, eyes on the ceiling. I hated this feeling. The helplessness. Not knowing what to fix or how to make it better.

I didn’t want to be angry. I didn’t want to hurt anyone. But this thing inside me-my wolf-he didn’t get it. He only knew that our mate was hurting and we couldn’t stop it.

My phone buzzed on the counterI sat up, water dripping off my arms as I reached for it. Beta Derek.I dried my hand on the towel and answered, stepping out of the tub.

“Yeah?”

“I didn’t mean to wake you,” Derek’s voice came through low, steady. “But I figured you’d want to hear this the second it came in.”

I walked back into the room, keeping my steps quiet. Scarlett was still sleeping, her breathing soft and even. I grabbed a shirt, threw it over my shoulders, and turned away from the bed.

“What is it?” I asked.

“We found something about the girl.”

I stopped cold in my tracks, shock and excitement coursing through me.

“The one you’ve been searching for, from years ago. We found a trace.”

The phone buzzed again, louder this time, vibrating along the surface of the table where I’d tossed it. I glanced back at Scarlett, still curled beneath the covers, her breathing steady and soft. I didn’t want to leave the room, didn’t want to step out and miss even a second of peace while I had it-but the phone didn’t stop.

And something in my chest stirred.

I picked it up without a word, thumb swiping the notification open. It wasn’t a call this time. It was a message.A single image.

It loaded slowly. My heart beat faster as the pixels sharpened, pulling together into something simple. Familiar.

A necklace.

Lying in Derek’s open palm, light catching the worn metal like it was something fragile and sacred. My breath caught somewhere deep in my throat. I stared. No blinking. No breathing. Just silence in my head for the first time all night.

I knew that necklace.

Down to the slight chip in the pendant. The clasp that always stuck. I hadn’t seen it in years, not in person-but I’d never forgotten it. Not once.

It wasn’t about gold or silver or whatever it was made from. It was what it meant. What it belonged to. Who it belonged to.

My hands tensed around the phone. I swallowed hard, stepping away from the bed, careful not to wake her. I needed air. I needed space. My thoughts were spiraling too fast.

Another buzz. A new Call coming in from Beta Derek I didn’t wait.

“Tell me you’re sure,” I said, voice low, almost too calm for what I felt.

“I’m sure,” he replied without pause. His voice had that tone. Quiet, confident, locked in. “It’s not a copy, not a replica. It’s the one. Down to the clasp.”

My hand tightened. I could feel my wolf twitch under my skin. Pacing. Growling low, not from anger-but something closer to knowing . A kind of deep memory that I didn’t forget. That never let go.

“Where did it turn up?” I asked.

“In the lower district, the owner was clearing out old boxes. Found it in a tray of trade-ins. Didn’t know its worth. But I did. Traced the record back through their logbooks. I’m still following the trail. We might have something solid this time.”

I closed my eyes, trying to slow the pounding in my head. The tension hadn’t left my body. My skin was still burning from before. My cock still heavy, stubborn with need. I’d ignored it-shoved it aside the second I saw Scarlett break down. But now something else was sparking inside me.

Hope. Just a little. A dangerous thing for a man like me.

“Do you think it’s really her? After all this time.”

“I do,” Derek said, firm. “There’s no way that necklace got there by accident. I’m chasing the real owner back to the roots. If I’m right… we’re close.”

I didn’t speak. Just listened to the breath in the silence, the weight of it settling over my shoulders.

“If there’s even a chance, then maybe this time something good will come of it. Maybe it won’t all go to shit.”

“I’m hoping the same,” Derek replied.

I nodded once, then ended the call.

The room was quiet again, thick with the scent of sleep and sweat and soft cotton. My feet sank into the carpet as I walked back toward the bed, slower now. My fingers brushed against my jaw. I hadn’t realized I was grinning.

Not wide. Not loud. Just enough. The necklace was real. The girl might be too.And for the first time in years, something inside me cracked open, like a window in a house long boarded up.

“What necklace?”

I turned around slowly. There, leaning in the doorwaywith one of Scarlett’s robes wrapped around her like it was Charlotte.

“And what girl?”

Scarlett’S POV

Breakfast felt off. The room just felt off. Cold but not cold. Like someone left the window open inside my chest. I couldn’t eat. Couldn’t even blink right. Ryan was sitting right there in front of me and we hadn’t said much to each other since last night, but his eyes kept sliding to me like he was checking if I’d fall apart or maybe if I remembered. But I remembered everything. I remembered his hands on me, his mouth, the way I almost let go and then didn’t. I remembered how I pushed him away with my whole chest pounding and I hated myself for it and I hated that I couldn’t explain why it felt like my body betrayed me.

I stared down at the food. Eggs, toast, that orange juice I usually finished before the plate, and now it just looked like colors on a plate. I wasn’t hungry. I was just trying to exist. Grandfather sat at the head like a statue made of tension and secrets. Beta Derek was behind Ryan like usual, arms folded, sharp eyes, quiet mouth. Ryan hadn’t touched anything on his plate either. He was just pretending to be better than me.

Then Grandfather spoke and the room died.

“Did the bond complete last night?”
