“Mate.”

Rafe ignored it.

For now.

Luna Carla studied him carefully.

“Why were you running?” she asked.

“And why do you not carry a pack scent?”

Rafe knew immediately he could not tell them the truth.

That he had escaped the rogues.

That he had been imprisoned for betrayal.

That he intended to hunt down the female who killed Hazel.

No.

That truth would get him killed.

But a lie…

A lie could buy him time.

“I belonged to a small pack,” Rafe said quietly.

His voice lowered as he spoke.

“We were attacked by rogues.”

The healer and Luna both gasped softly.

“Our Alpha was killed during the attack,” Rafe continued.

“And his final command was for me to run.”

He forced a painful expression onto his face.

“I was the Beta.”

“believe I was the only one who survived.”

His voice trembled slightly.

“I wanted to die beside my Alpha and his mate.”

His eyes lowered.

“My own mate died as well.”

He let the sadness linger in the room.

“But an Alpha command cannot be ignored,” he continued softly. “My body obeyed even when my heart did not.”

“Oh my goddess…” Luna Carla whispered.

“Yes,” Rafe said quietly.

“If I had not run into your vehicle…”

He shook his head.

“I might still be running.”

He gave a tired sigh.

“And that is probably why you cannot smell my pack anymore.”

He lifted his gaze slightly.

“Because my pack no longer exists.”

He made sure the grief in his voice was convincing.

More importantly-

He made sure they could smell it.

Sadness.

Loss.

Despair.

He needed them to believe him.

He needed their sympathy.

Luna Carla looked genuinely heartbroken.

“I am so sorry,” she said softly.

Alpha Charles nodded slowly.

“I heard rumors of a pack being attacked recently,” he said.

“But I did not realize the entire pack had fallen.”

He hesitated slightly.

“We would be willing to offer you shelter here while you recover.”

Then he sighed.

“But there is… a complication.”

Rafe tilted his head slightly.

“Is it because of my mate?” he asked quietly.

Alpha Charles’ brows lifted slightly.

“You can smell her?”

Rafe nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

His eyes drifted briefly toward the door.

“But I assume she will not want me.”

He lowered his gaze.

“Especially not someone from a fallen pack.”

“Beta or not.”

Luna Carla exchanged a glance with Alpha Charles

“Yes,” she admitted gently.

“Your mate is here.”

“She is our daughter.”

Rafe pretended to be surprised.

“And she is not ready for a mate,” Luna Carla added carefully.

Rafe nodded slowly.

“I understand, Luna.”

His voice sounded calm and accepting.

“If she wishes to reject me, I will not stop her.”

He gave a tired sigh.

“We can do it now if she wishes.”

“Now?” Luna Carla asked in surprise.

“Should you not rest first?”

“I will rest afterward,” Rafe replied.

“I simply ask permission to remain here while I recover.”

Alpha Charles nodded.

“You are welcome to stay here while you heal.”

Then his eyes glazed over slightly.

Mind link.

He was contacting someone.

Rafe already knew who.

A moment later-

The door opened.

And she entered.

Her scent flooded the room instantly.

Strong.

Sweet.

Inside Rafe’s mind, his wolf howled excitedly.

“Mate!”

But Rafe only looked at her calmly.

Compared to Hazel…

This female meant nothing to him.

But she could still be useful.

She was Alpha-born.

And as the former Beta of Crimson Fang, Rafe knew something important.

Alpha Charles had no heir.

Only this daughter.

And now-

She was his mate.

Luck was finally turning in his favor.

“Vanessa,” Alpha Charles said.

“This is Rafe.”

Then he looked at Rafe.

“Rafe, this is my daughter/Vanessa.”

Rafe simply nodded in acknowledgement.

Vanessa crossed her arms.

“Can we just move on to the rejection?” she said bluntly.

“Vanessa!” Luna Carla gasped.

“What?” Vanessa replied impatiently.

“That’s fine, Luna Carla,” Rafe said calmly.

Then he looked at Vanessa.

“But perhaps we could do the rejection privately?”

Alpha Charles nodded.

‘Of course.”

He turned to his daughter.

We will give you privacy.”

Vanessa, we will wait in the pack house.”
