Vanessa froze.
“No… no… no,” she whispered to herself. –
Inside her mind, her wolf howled again.
“Mate! Mate! Mate!”
Vanessa clenched her fists.
“How can that be?” she whispered internally.
Her wolf continued excitedly.
“Mate! Save mate! He hurt!”
Vanessa stared down at the unconscious wolf lying on the road.
He was badly injured.
His clothes were torn and stained with blood.
But his face-
Even unconscious, there was something about him.
“Who is he?” Alpha Charles asked the driver.
“Is he a rogue?” Luna Carla asked.
The driver shook his head.
“I don’t think so, Luna.”
He frowned.
“He doesn’t smell like a rogue.”
He hesitated.
“But he also doesn’t carry a pack scent.”
Alpha Charles frowned.
Before he could say anything-
Vanessa spoke.
“Daddy…”
Her voice was quieter now.
“He’s my mate.”
Beth Alpha Charles and Luna Carla turned toward her in shock.
“What?!” Alpha Charles exclaimed.
“Vanessa… are you certain? Luna Carla asked carefully.
Vanessa nodded stiffly.
“Mother, I would not joke about something like this.”
Her expression hardened.
“We need to take him to the pack.”
Luna Carla’s face softened slightly with relief.
But Vanessa’s next words made her eyes widen.
“So he can recover.”
Vanessa’s jaw clenched.
“And accept my rejection.”
“Vanessa!” Luna Carla gasped.
“Mates are sacred. You cannot simply reject your fated mate.”
Vanessa looked at her mother with irritation.
“And what do you expect me to do?” she snapped.
“Accept the bond?”
She gestured toward the unconscious wolf.
“We don’t even know who he is!”
“Enough!” Alpha Charles barked firmly.
The argument stopped immediately.
Alpha Charles looked down at the unconscious wolf thoughtfully.
Then he turned toward the driver.
“Bring him into the vehicle.”
“Yes, Alpha.”
“We are taking him back to the pack.”
His expression grew serious.
“The healer will examine him.”
Vanessa crossed her arms, watching as the injured wolf was carefully lifted into the car.
Inside her mind, her wolf continued to repeat excitedly.
Mate. Mate. Mate.
Vanessa clenched her jaw.
She refused to accept it.
No unknown wolf-
Especially one without a pack-
Would ever become her mate.
Before Rafe even opened his eyes, he could already hear sounds around him.
Voices.
Low murmurs.
And the steady, rhythmic beeping of a machine somewhere near his head.
The air smelled sterile, like herbs and medicine.
But beneath that-
There was another scent.
Faint.
Sweet.
Familiar in a way that made something deep inside him stir.
His wolf suddenly spoke inside his mind.
“Our mate is here.”
Rafe frowned slightly even before opening his eyes.
“What do you mean?” he muttered internally.
“Our mate is dead,” he snapped back mentally. “She was killed by that stupid bitch.”
The memory of Hazel’s lifeless body flashed in his mind, and rage surged through him like poison.
But his wolf did not retreat.
“Not that mate.”
There was excitement in his wolf’s voice.
“Our second chance. She is here. The one we smell.”
Rafe stilled.
Second chance?
Another mate?
The thought made his stomach twist.
The beeping machine beside him suddenly sped up slightly as his heart rate increased.
The voices nearby paused.
Footsteps moved closer.
Rafe realized immediately he could no longer pretend to be unconscious.
Slowly, he opened his eyes.
The first thing he saw was a white ceiling-above him.
He blinked a few times, adjusting to the brightness of the room before slowly turning his head.
Three wolves stood nearby.
Two males.
One female.
One of the males wore the robes of a healer, while the other radiated authority and dominance.
Alpha.
The female beside him carried the softer but still powerful aura of a Luna.
The healer stepped forward first.
“Hello,” he said gently. “My name is Healer Max.”
He gave Rafe a polite nod.
“You were brought here by the Alpha and Luna.”
He gestured toward the couple beside him.
“May we ask for your name?”
Rafe slowly pushed himself into a slightly upright position.
“My name is Rafe,” he answered.
His eyes flicked around the room again.
“Where am I?”
“And why was I brought here?”
The Alpha stepped forward.
“You are in Stone Claw Pack territory,” he said.
“I am Alpha Charles.”
He gestured toward the female beside him.
“And this is my mate, Luna Carla.”
Alpha Charles crossed his arms slightly.
“We were on our way back to our pack when you ran directly in front of our vehicle.”
His voice remained calm but firm.
“You were unconscious when we found you.”
“So we brought you here for treatment.”
Rafe listened carefully, but his attention kept drifting toward the door.
The scent was stronger there.
His wolf stirred again.
