A sharp intake of breath echoed through the pack.
“They didn’t want to go,” Robert said. “But they were ordered. They couldn’t refuse.”
Talon’s aura flared, the ground beneath his feet cracking slightly.
“And before she left,” Pei whispered, tears spilling freely now, “she looked at us… and ordered us to forget. To never tell a soul what we had witnessed.”
Silence fell like a blade.
Truth had been spoken.
And nothing would ever be the same again.
Everyone looked at Luna Hazel. Her face, once flushed with authority and practiced grace, drained of all color. The confident mask she always wore cracked in an instant, her lips trembling as if her body already knew what her mind refused to accept.
The pack courtyard was silent-no rustle of fur, no shifting of feet. Even the wind seemed to be still.
“You killed my parents.” Diana’s voice cut through the silence like a blade dragged across stone.
It wasn’t loud. It didn’t need to be.
There was something wrong with it-something ancient. A low vibration beneath the words, a growl that didn’t belong to a wolfless woman.
Hazel’s eyes snapped to Diana, wide with shock.
That’s impossible, Hazel thought wildly. She doesn’t have a wolf.
Everyone knew that. Diana had been born without one. A warrior by sheer grit, instinct, and relentless training-but still, wolfless. Vulnerable. Easy to dismiss.
Yet the sound that had come from her throat was unmistakably lupine.
“I am the Luna of this pack,” Hazel snapped, desperation sharpening her tone. “I do not have to answer to you.”
Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Unease. Confusion. Fear.
“And you really think being Luna of this pack makes you untouchable?” Diana took a step forward. Her eyes-once a deep forest green-began to change. Light flickered within them, as if stars were igniting behind glass. Silver threaded through green, swirling, alive.
Gasps echoed around them.
“Diana!” Asher barked, his voice tight with alarm. He stared at her like he was seeing a ghost.
She doesn’t have a wolf.
He knew that. He had always known that.
And yet the aura rolling off Diana now-raw, vast, pressurized-was something even seasoned alphas struggled to withstand.
Talon stepped forward, placing himself slightly in front of Diana without blocking her-protective, but respectful.
“My Luna has every right to question you,” Talon said, his voice calm, deadly, final. “She is the Luna Queen. She is also the daughter of the wolves you ordered to leave the safety of the bunker.”
The words hit like thunder.
Hazel’s breath stuttered.
You ordered them out,” Talon continued, his eyes never leaving Hazel’s face. “During a rogue attack. Knowing what would happen.”
Talon’s aura surged.
The ground beneath their feet trembled.
“Now, Luna Hazel,” he said softly, which somehow made it worse, “tell me the truth. Why did you do it? What did my mate’s parents do that made you condemn them to death?”
The pressure of his power pressed down on everyone present. Knees bent. Heads bowed. Wolves whimpered under their breath.
“Alpha King!” Asher shouted, stepping forward. Panic edged his voice now. “This-this doesn’t have to happen like this-“
“Alpha Asher,” Talon’s head snapped toward him, and said coldly, “you will not interfere.”
The pack turned as one to look at their alpha.
Or,” Talon continued, his eyes narrowing, “are you part of what your Luna did?”
Silence exploded.
Every member of Asher’s pack stared at him, waiting.
Judging.
“No,” Asher swallowed hard. “Of course not. I would never-never order something like that.”
“Then do not interfere,” Talon said, dismissing him without another glance.
Hazel’s lips were pressed together so tightly they had gone white. Her hands trembled at her sides as she fought against the invisible force wrapping around her mind.
“Luna Hazel,” Talon said quietly, stepping closer. “I advise you not to fight my order.” He tilted his head slightly. “With how insignificant your aura is compared to mine, resisting will only make this worse. Your brain will melt long before you succeed.”
Hazel’s breath came in shallow gasps.
“And even before that,” Talon continued, voice merciless, “your body will protect itself. It will answer me- whether you want to or not.”
Hazel tried to scream. Tried to clamp her mouth shut, but her body betrayed her. Blood spilled from her nose first. Then her eyes. Then her ears.
A scream tore from her throat as the truth ripped free.
“I did it!”
The shout echoed through the courtyard.
“I did it so I could teach a lesson to that wolfless unranked warrior!”
The pack recoiled.
Hazel’s voice rose, hysterical now, unfiltered and ugly.
“She thought she could defy me! Me-the-Luna! She is nothing but a warrior! Strong or not, she has no power, no rank, no wolf! So how dare she question my orders? How dare she look at me like I was nothing!
Diana’s chest heaved.
Hazel sobbed and screamed all at once. “So I did to remind her! To remind her what happens when someone like her forgets her place!”
Silence followed.
The kind that suffocates.
No one moved. No one breathed.
Even Talon stood frozen-not from shock, but from barely restrained violence.
A Luna.
Jealous. Insecure. Willing to murder innocents to soothe her wounded pride.
Diana’s voice shattered the stillness. “You killed my parents because of your jealousy and insecurity.” Her words shook. “You couldn’t fight me, so you targeted them,” Diana continued, tears burning down her cheeks. “You couldn’t beat me, make me bow to your pathetic title, so you slaughtered the people I loved!”
She pointed at Hazel. “You sorry excuse for a Luna!”
Hazel barely had time to look up.
Diana lunged.
“No-!” Asher shouted.
Too late.
Midair, Diana shifted.
Bones cracked. Light exploded.
Artemis tore free. Silver-white fur burst forth, massive and radiant, starlight etched into every strand. Her eyes burned with celestial fury as she landed with earth-shaking force.
The pack screamed.
Wolves dropped to their knees.
Artemis was enormous-larger than most alphas, her presence crushing, divine.
“I will rip you apart!”Diana’s voice merged with Artemis’s guttural growl, echoing through the minds of every wolf present.
Hazel screamed.
Talon moved. In a blur, he was between them, one hand outstretched, power flaring like a wall of steel.
“Enough,” he commanded.
Artemis skidded to a halt inches from Hazel, claws gouging deep into stone. Her teeth snapped shut, barely restrained, her entire body vibrating with the urge to kill.
Talon turned his head slightly. “My mate. I know how you feel. But you cannot kill her yet. We still have questions that needed answers.”
Artemis snarled, but she bowed her head.
For now.
Hazel collapsed, sobbing, broken.
And the pack finally understood.
This wasn’t just justice.
This was judgment.
‘Artemis, Diana said in their shared mind, her voice still vibrating with restrained fury, ‘Talon is right.
The massive silver wolf stood rigid before the crowd, claws dug into the stone, breath coming out in heated bursts. Artemis’s eyes never left Hazel, who lay crumpled on the ground like something already dead.
‘We still need answers, Diana continued, her tone steady but edged with steel. ‘Once we have everything- everything-we will rip her apart.’
Artemis snarled, the sound rolling through the courtyard and straight into the bones of every wolf present.
‘And no one, Diana added, her voice hardening as her gaze flicked briefly toward Talon, ‘not even our mate, will stop us.
For a long moment, Artemis didn’t move. Then, slowly, deliberately, she lowered her massive head. The rage didn’t disappear, but it obeyed.
Silver light shimmered around her form as Artemis began to shift back.
The transformation was just as shocking as the first time-bones folding, fur retreating, power condensing rather than vanishing. When it ended, Diana stood where the wolf had been, breathing hard, her eyes still faintly glowing with starlight.
Before anyone could even think to look too closely, Talon was there. He shrugged off his coat and wrapped it around Diana’s shoulders with possessive finality, pulling her against his chest. His arm tightened around her waist, his body angled so no one else could see her exposed skin.
No one-especially Asher-had the right.
The message was unmistakable.
Diana was his mate. His Luna Queen. Untouchable.
The pack remained frozen.
She… has a wolf?
The thought moved through them like a shared mind-link.
Everyone had believed the same thing for years. Diana Nightshade-the wolfless warrior. The anomaly. The one who fought like she had something to prove.
But they had just seen Artemis.
Not a weak wolf.
Not a normal one.
Something ancient.
Something terrifying.
Asher felt like the ground had been ripped out from under him. His gaze locked onto Diana, his face pale, his mind scrambling to reconcile memory with reality.
“You… you have a wolf,” His voice lacked authority now. It sounded small. Broken. “Since when?”
Diana turned her head slowly to look at him, her expression cold-not angry anymore, but distant. As if he no longer mattered enough for rage.
“Have you forgotten already, Alpha Asher?” She asked. Her words were calm, but each one landed like a strike. “Before you rejected me,” she continued, “before you looked at me and decided I wasn’t worthy to stand beside you because you thought I was wolfless…”
She lifted her chin slightly. “I told you I had a wolf.”
Asher’s breath caught.
“You didn’t believe me,” Diana said. “You laughed. You said I was desperate. You said I was lying to cling to a rank I didn’t deserve.”
The pack stirred uncomfortably. Some looked at Asher with disbelief. Others with dawning shame.
“I warned you,” Diana went on. “But you were so certain you knew better. So certain that power and rank made you right.”
“So don’t act surprised now,” her fingers curled into Talon’s coat, and she finished quietly. “You chose not to see me.”
Asher opened his mouth, then closed it again.
For the first time since becoming alpha, he had nothing to say.
Hazel whimpered on the ground.
Diana’s gaze flicked back to her, the starlight in her eyes flaring faintly once more.
This conversation isn’t over,” she said, her voice carrying easily across the courtyard. “You still owe us answers.
Talon dipped his head slightly toward her, silent agreement.
“And once we have them,” Diana continued, her hand tightening against his chest as Artemis stirred restlessly inside her, “justice will be served.”
