I carried him inside, noting that no lights were on which was odd as Sedona usually made it a habit to leave the porch light on when I was coming home late.
This was probably one of her passive aggressive gestures, trying to make a point about how I failed her.
After tucking Nick into bed, I headed to our bedroom, loosening my tie and already mentally preparing for another inevitable confrontation that was bound to happen.
Sedona would be waiting in bed as usual, ready to guilt trip me about taking Nick to have a little fun with my friend, in general basically spending time with my own son and not including her. I was exhausted and not in the mood for her dramatics.
But the bedroom was empty.
“Sedona?” I called out, checking the bathroom. Nothing, I frowned and pulled out my phone, noticing I had several missed calls from Grandma Brooke. Unusual-she rarely called me more than once if I didn’t answer.
I was about to call her back when my phone rang, her name appearing on the screen.
“Grandmother, I was just about to-“
“What did you do to that girl?” Her voice was filled with anger as she seemed extremely ticked off about something that I did, although I had no idea what it could possibly be.
“What did you do to make Sedona leave?”
I blinked, confused at her question. “What are you talking about? Leave? She’s just-“
“Sedona came to see me today. She returned the necklace. My necklace, Logan. The one I gave her as a wedding gift. She said she was leaving Chicago. Leaving you. She said she was never the wife of the Logan family, and therefore she had no right to keep it.”
Something twisted in my stomach although I forced it deep down and refuse to pay attention to it.” Grandmother, you know how Sedona’s. She is always sensitive to things that doesn’t even matter. She’s being dramatic. It’s just-“
“Dramatic? That sweet girl came to my home and said goodbye. Goodbye, Logan. She’s leaving you, and based on what little she told me, I can’t say I blame her. You deserve to be deprived of a treasure like her, since you are out there, fishing for coal”
Grandmother, you don’t understand. Sedona has been impossible to deal with lately. Ever since Katherine came back, she’s been jealous and possessive and-“
“Katherine.” The name came out like a curse, spat out with enough venom to make me flinch although she wasn’t visibly present.
“That’s what this is about. You brought that woman back into your life, basically playing married couple with her when you have a legal wife ordained by God and law and you’re surprised your wife is upset?”
“Katherine is a friend. She’s recovering from an injury. I’m just – “
“You’re parading another woman around in front of your wife. Taking your son on trips with her. Making Sedona feel like an outsider in her own family.” Grandma Brooke’s voice was cold. “I raised you better than this, Logan.”
“That’s not what is happening, you have to understand – Sedona is overreacting. She’s always overreacting lately. She probably just went to a hotel to make a point. She’ll be back in a day or two when she’s done sulking.”
There was a long pause on the other end of the line. When Grandma Brooke spoke again, her voice was quiet, disappointed. “If you believe that, then you’re a bigger fool than I thought. That girl didn’t look like someone making a point, Logan. She looked like someone saying goodbye forever. She looked… broken.”
“She’s fine. She’s just-“
“Find her. Make this right. Before you lose something you can never get back.”
She hung up before I could respond.
I stared at my phone, feeling both irritated and yet greatly unease. This was stupid, Sedona was probably doing this intentionally, she was probably hiding at a spa, using my credit cards to indulge in something nice for herself while she waited for me to come crawling on my feet to apologize and she had recruited grandmother for this exact reason.
But I checked the closet anyway, just to confirm.
Half of it was empty. Sedona’s side, the smaller side I’d given her because I needed more space for my work clothes, was nearly bare. Her casual clothes were gone. Her toiletries from the bathroom were gone. Her laptop and the few personal items she kept on her nightstand-gone.
The unease grew stronger. This was more than just a dramatic gesture. In all our fights, she had never gone this far before, This was… actually leaving.
I pulled open the drawers of her dresser, finding them mostly empty. She’d taken her clothes but left behind the expensive items I’d bought her-the designer shoes, the jewelry, the fancy dresses. Why would she leave those? They were worth thousands of dollars.
Logan’s POV
This was odd and out of track for Sedona. She wouldn’t actually leave, and not take all this. These were all hers.
Unless she really didn’t want anything from me. Unless she really was-
No. No, this was still just Sedona being Sedona, taking this to a new notch just to make me worry over her, while she sleeps peacefully in an expensive hotel.
Sedona was always prone to dramatic and emotional acts, it wasn’t a new thing and she was just overreacting to Katherine’s presence. She’d cool off in a few days and come back, probably with some demands about me spending less time with Katherine or some other ultimatum that would just be as ridiculous as the former.
I noticed the note on the dining room table, with her wedding ring sitting on top of it.
“I meant what I said. I want a divorce. My lawyer will contact you. Please don’t try to find me.”
A divorce. The thought of it made me chuckle bitterly, who the hell did she think she was trying to fool with this.
She was actually talking about divorce now. I crumpled the note in my fist, anger surging through me. How dare she? How dare she abandon our son, abandon our marriage, just because she couldn’t handle me having a female friend?
I stalked back to the bedroom, yanking off my tie with more force than necessary. This was absurd and plain ridiculous, she didn’t think that being married to her, meant no more female friendships in my life. We’d been married for three years. We had a child together. You didn’t just walk away from that because you were jealous.
My phone buzzed with a text from Katherine: “Did you make it home okay? Nick must be exhausted! Such a sweet boy. I’m so glad we got to spend this time together.
I typed back quickly: “Home safe. Thanks again for coming with us. Nick had a great time.”
I was about to put my phone down when I noticed the small wooden box on Sedona’s nightstand-Nick’s baby teeth box. She’d kept every single one, had made this huge deal about preserving them. I’d found it excessive at the time, just another example of Sedona’s overprotective nature.
But she’d left it behind. The one thing I knew meant something to her, and she’d left it.
Why would she do that?
The answer came immediately: Because she’s coming back. She wouldn’t leave something this important unless she planned to return for it.
The realization was reassuring as I felt my panic dissolving as I realized what this meant. This was just a dramatic exit, meant to get my attention, to make me worry. Well, it had worked. I’d give her a few days to calm down, and then we’d have a conversation about boundaries and reasonable behaviour and how marriage required compromise from both parties. As long as Nick’s baby tooth were still here, Sedona wasn’t leaving this marriage. I had worked myself into a frenzy for nothing.
“Dad?” Nick’s sleepy voice came from the doorway. “Where’s Mom?”
I turned to find my son rubbing his eyes, his hair sticking up in that way it always did after naps. He hadn’t noticed it yet, still busy rubbing sleep from his eyes.
